How to rant/learn about MS

Popular Linux Distros

Certain Linux distros have proven to be more popular than others. Below is a list of popular mainstream distros.

OpenSUSE http://www.opensuse.org
Mandriva http://www.mandriva.com
Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com
Debian regular cd: http://www.debian.com install from Windows: http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com
Fedora http://www.fedoraproject.org

The Linux.org Linux Distribution search engine.

You can go to www.linux.org to find a distribution suitable for your needs. There are filters for everything from Power-User to Runs on MS Windows. This is the hardest of the alternatives. The code of Linux is based on traditional Unix-based operating systems such as Mac OS X. If you do decide to go Linux, you might want to take some of your Windows Applications with you. With Wine, or Crossover Linux, you can install anything from Internet Explorer (except it can't integrate this time) to Windows Media Player. However there are open-source projects for many Windows applications, there are some that just can't (or won't) be mimicked.

ReactOS

I really do hope that what Linux did to Unix, ReactOS will do to Windows. This operating system is based of the NT Kernel of Windows, meaning that Windows programs will run natively under it. However being built on the NT Kernel it still suffers from the Blue Screen Of Death. This project is nowhere complete. As of August 6th 2007, their current version is .3.3 RC1. The current release is alpha, and the .4.x will stay in alpha. They have made plans for .5.x to come into beta, meaning that it is actually usable. If you do install ReactOS, please be advised that you will not be getting on the internet soon. I have tested this release out, and it works like crap. For the time being ReactOS is a fate worse than Windows, but I'm hoping that they will get it together and make it work on *ALL* systems. Currently their OS will not run on some hardware. The .3.3 version is based on NT Kernel 5.2  (Windows Server 2003) However it is *Just* an operating system, not a server OS. Their project can be found at www.ReactOS.org

Ever wonder what happened to DOS

Yes I'm sure we've all used DOS, or at least the command prompt, at some point in time. Yes DOS is still available for download. There is a newer flavor of DOS, called FreeDOS. You can get it here.
FreeDOS is very large for a version of DOS. Other versions of DOS and many other old programs are available at vetusware.com
However you should be picky about what kind of programs you get and *ALWAYS* pay attention to the language symbols.

Now to the browsers

Firefox is a good browser for the everyday user. You can get it here if you haven't already downloaded it with my patch.
Safari is also a good browser, but for the more advanced user. You can get it here.
Netscape 9 is a Firefox-like browser with a different theme. You can get it here.
Opera is a very good browser for the very advanced user. It even comes with an advanced email client. You can get it here. It is also good for cheating your mobile network out of web time.

Office suites

OpenOffice.org is the only office suite I would ever recommend. It is by far the closest thing I've ever seen to Microsoft Office You can get it here.
