Hello Students and Parents,

I hope you find this site to be a useful source of information about important class assignments and activities. My homework hotline is also updated daily, and you can call 375-0135 ext. 527 to hear my voice recording on daily homework assignments. Students receive their spelling homework on the first day of the week and they need to return it to me by the last day of the week. They will have class assignments throughout the week and some of these may need to be completed as homework if they didn't finish them during class. These instances will not be noted on the homework hotline and it is the student's responsibility to complete and turn these in the next day. My prep. period is from 12:15-1:00 each day.  Call ahead of time to schedule a meeting with me 375-1301. Thank you for taking the time to check out this site.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Ernst

Persuasive Essay

Persuasive Essay-Due December 15, 2006

Mrs. Ernst

2nd Qtr.

Dear Students/Parents:

The persuasive essay is an assignment designed to fulfill this California State Content Standard:

Writing 2.5(6th Grade)/Writing 2.4 (7th Grade)

a) State a clear position on a proposition or proposal;

b) Support the position with organized and relevant evidence

c) Anticipate and address reader concerns and counterarguments.

Students will choose a topic that appeals to them. The topic must be a subject of debate or argument to which there are two opposing sides. In the introduction paragraph the student will state the issue and their position on it by saying if they are for or against the argument being presented. The conclusion paragraph will remind the reader of the strong reasons that support their position and appeal to the reader to agree with the student’s position.

The body of their essay will include four-six “+pro” reasons that the student will make to support their opinion/position. These reasons must be strong, meaningful, and important. They will dedicate one paragraph to each of these reasons. The reason will be the topic of the paragraph and the information in the paragraph will explain, elaborate, give evidence, and/or examples to support the reason being discussed. Students should save their strongest “pro” point to discuss last.

In the body of the essay the student must acknowledge two “-con” reasons that the opposing side could argue against the student’s position on the issue. The essay will acknowledge these “con” points and offer a solution that deals with the negative arguments against their position. This may be accomplished in one or two paragraphs, depending on how in depth the “con” points are. This paragraph should appear after the first two “pro” paragraphs and before the last two “pro” paragraphs (in the middle of the body).

We have spent three full days discussing and examining possible topics, organization, and ideas. The pre-writing work will be accomplished in class, but the final draft will be a homework assignment. The essay may be typed or handwritten. If typed it must be double spaced, in a font that is easy to read, and written on the front side of the paper only. If it is handwritten it must be in blue or black ink only, written on the front side of the paper only. The length of the assignment is determined by the assignment specifications. Intro. Paragraph, 4-6 “pro” paragraphs, 1-2 “con” paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.

Thank you for your work on this worthwhile assignment and if you need any additional information please contact me at James Monroe.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Ernst
