At 0143 hrs, units were dispatched for a reported structure fire on Vineyard Rd.  As units were enroute it was reported to be a shed in the rear of the house that was fully involved.  Car 6 arrived first and found just that with 20 lb propane cylinders as direct exposures.  E1 arrived first laying in a feeder with E7 making the hydrant.  E1's crew pulled a 2" line to the rear yard to knock the fire.  E2 arrived with a crew of 5 and helped move hose and perform overhaul.  The 10 x 10 shed was a total loss.  E2 cleared 0222 hrs and covered town while units picked up.

Saturday, June 21st, 2008-Company 2 Stands By For Annual Fireworks

Company 2 stood by at Branford Point once again for the annual fireworks show.  Starting at 1000 hrs a crew of 7 provided coverage while the fireworks were being set up.  Then at 1600 hrs more members came down to help set up for our annual cookout and provide fire and medical protection.  It was a great day that ended with yet another great fireworks display, even though it was delayed for an hour.  As the show went off at around 2200 hrs the wind picked up a little and blew smoke and debris toward the large crowd.  Company 2 members at one point laddered one of the condo buildings checking for large embers falling on the roof.  The embers were put out and there were no injuries reported during the event.

Sunday, June 8th, 2008-Severe Thunderstorms Hit Branford

As Engine 2 was returning to town after a live burn in Wolcott, the members ran into heavy rain, hail and lightning in the Waterbury area as severe thunderstorms rolled across the state.  After driving through the storms it cleared up a little bit.  But that was short lived as the storms made there way into the shoreline area, including Branford.  Multiple calls started pouring in including houses struck by lightning, AFA's, trees and wires down and even overturned boats with people in the water.  Every piece of fire appratus in Branford responded on calls.  E2 ran a house hit by lightning which amounted to nothing and an arcing wire.  Station 2 was without power from approx. 1600 hrs to 2200 hrs due to lightning strikes hitting telephone poles around the firehouse.  These storms broke the 90 to 100 degree heatwave of the past week in CT.

Monday, May 26th, 2008-Memorial Day Ends With Fatal Fire

Memorial Day started out as a great day with temps that reached the 70's.  The day commenced with a parade in the morning in the town center with approx. 20 firefighters marching.  Twelve out of the 20 marchers were Company 2 members.  After the parade was over everyone went to parties and picnics.  Then at 1950 hrs back to back box assignments came in.  The first one was for an oven fire at the Orchard Heights Condos off Florence Rd.  And less than a minute later the second box came in for a bedroom fire in a condo on Stonegate Circle.  E2 responded within a couple minutes with 5 to the oven fire.  E1 was first in with a Company 2 member already on scene and the crew quickly found no fire or hazards.  As E2 was about to go on scene, E1 cancelled the assignment and directed units to respond on the bedroom fire.  E7, Medic 1 & C6 were first on scene for the bedroom fire with a report of 1 person still not accounted for.  The E7 & Medic 1 crews quickly stretched an 1 3/4" handline and conducted a search.  E2 arrived second due and secured the hydrant and pumped E7.  The crews extinguished a minor fire and found the victim who was unconscious.  The Medic 1 crew quickly transported the victim to the hospital where they succumb to their injuries.  AMR transported a second patient with minor smoke inhalation.  E2 operated for approx. one hour.

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008-E2 Is First In For Fire At Dutch Wharf Marina

At 2226 hrs a resident on Harbor St. had called in and reported seeing heavy fire possibly coming from the Dutch Wharf Marina which is off of Maple St.  So the box assignment was sent out.  E2 had a crew of six at the firehouse and responded within a minute.  E2 and Car 6 arrived first at the marina with nothing visible until they got to the backside of the marina where they found heavy fire showing from the D side of a 2 story woodframe boat storage building.  The E2 crew pulled a 2 1/2" and  1 3/4" handlines.  The crew got on the 2 1/2" and started hitting the fire off of tank water and made a great stop knocking most of the fire down before it spread to the rest of the building.  At this time E1 laid a feeder to E2, establishing a watersupply.  Upon Car 6 giving the 'working fire' E4 was added to the assignment and upon their arrival laid a second supply line down Harbor St. into a driveway on the D side of the building and pulling an 1 3/4" handline.  Crews then set up ladders opening everything up to check for extension and for extensive overhaul.  Units that operated on scene were E1, E2, E4, E7, E9, T1, R1.  Guilford Fire was on scene as the RIT team while East Haven Fire covered Branford.  All crews did an outstanding job at this fire.  Also two antique boats were saved.  E2 operated for approx. two hours.  Company 2 had a total of 12 members on scene.  More photos can be seen at Mary Johnson Photography.
