STOP PRESS - Mousekateers features on Better Homes & Gardens - July, 2009
We are a small family living in Lake Macquarie, a city situated around the edge of the largest saltwater lake in Australia, 15 minutes from Newcastle in the beautiful Hunter Valley - a renowned wine region, and just under 2 hours north of Sydney. Our family includes a Bearded Collie, a cat and a couple of goldfish and currently 40+ mice.
In August, 2006 we came across a litter of longhair mice at our local pet and produce store. We didn't know about the huge varieties available in fancy mice and were fascinated by the colours and coats.
Our first mouse was a baby black banded standard mouse who stood out alone amongst the longcoat litter. We decided we wanted two mice but as we couldn't tell the genders we took one and went back the next day for another after some quick internet research on the sexing of mice.
As we perused the internet sites of mouse breeders we decided to look for something that sounded rather exotic - snowtigers! Alas there were not too many around so we found one of the suppliers of some of the rats and mice to our local pet and produce store.
She was unable to provide what we were looking for but put together five brindle females and a BEW boy in an attempt to breed some. We decided that we'd like to be in on the breeding and took all six mice home. Voila! Our two original mice increased to eight and we hadn't even bred a litter yet.
