Moss Lake Lumber Co.
Logging The Pacific Northwest in Australia

My Locomotive Fleet

I have a steam and diesel fleet with which I'll be able to run one or the other type or mix both.
My steam locos are mainly shay and heislers (with a 2-truck climax to come now that Bachmann has released them) and some rod locos. I have a total of 12 locos at the moment.
My diesel fleet consists of 4
kitbashed
Athearn SW switchers with a GP-9, FM H10-44 Baldwin VO1000 and 4 GE 70 tonners.

The Log Car Fleet

I currently run 3 types of log cars The main type is the 40 foot wood sill skeleton log car, typical of the Pacific Northwest. I have 25 of these car with another 20 to build. The second type of car is a NWSL 50 foot brass car. There's 9 cars in this fleet. Lastly, the third type of car consists of an Athearn 40 foot flat car with the deck cut out, leaving the centre sill and cross bearers. I have 12 cars in this fleet. My eventual aim is a 50 car fleet. The way I envisage the layout to eventually be is to have to have a loads in/empties out style of operation with the woods reload backed up to the mill's logdump. This way the log cars avoid handling when loaded or unloaded as the logs are attached to the car. For every loaded car there's an unloaded one as well.

REVENUE LOG CARS

51 to 64 = 12 cars. 40’ Wood skeleton log cars-First run. Note; 64 is prototype

65 to 73 = 08 cars. 40’ Wood skeleton log cars-Second run ; some fitted w/- Andrews trucks

74 to 94 = 20 cars 40’ Wood skeleton log cars

101 to 110 =10 cars. 50’ Wood skeleton log cars- NWSL brass; 110 is 40’ oddball   These cars, except for 110, have all recently been sold and are off roster.

111 to 135 = 22 cars. 40’ Steel flat cars - Athearn flats  To be eventually phased out

………………………………………………………….

TOTAL = 72 LOG CARS

2 loaded 8 car trains; 2 empty 8 car trains. An additional 4 loaded and 4 empty cars will also be needed, making a total of 40 log cars in total.

With the new layout requiring fewer cars, the Athearn and perhaps the NWSL cars will become surplus.

Shays and stuff

Two views of my shays.

Number1

Number 8. This is a brass Feather River #3 shay boiler & cab on a Bachmann shay mech. The shay was a junker when I bought it 12 years ago. Recently renumbered from #6

Number 7. A second run Rivarossi heisler. I have 4 of the original run heislers and all have been stored since 7's arrival.

Number 5. Still being modified.

A rare shot of 10

The pride of the fleet, number 12, a Pacific Coast shay.

Diesel 28 with it's tender and Jordan

The Jordan spreader. It was a Walthers kit with a kitbashed front end.

A close up of 28. I've been trying for a couple of years to get a good reliable low speed diesel. So far 27, 28 & 29 have Athearn SW chassis with Ernst low speed gearing, Model Torque torque converter motors with Proto 2000 Sw bodies. The torque convertor/motor drive lets a normally geared SW run with a shay without dragging it.

Some of my cars

Former Colarado Midland supply car No.18

One of my scratchbuilt skeleton log cars.

Commissary car No.19

Car No.20, the Cat doctor's parts car.

One of the wood side dump cars, No.26

Tank car No.8, for bunker 'C' oil.
