Eliza drummed her fingers on the steering wheel subconsciously as she watched the children run around and scramble over the play equipment in front of her. It had been two months since she had sat in that room with Frank and Mikey; two months since Gerard had left; thought; come back, and then left again to record the band's second album. They hadn't heard any word from Hope, so they all assumed she had listened to Gerard and got out of Jersey for good.
No, Gerard and Eliza were not an 'item' of any sort; she hadn't really talked to him about anything in fact. He had just come back and told her that he still needed more time to sort himself out, but he wanted her around. That's all he really said before he left, that and "look after Elli". As far as Elli knew Eliza really was her Mum, just a suddenly nicer version of her. They were staying at the Iero's and Linda was now known as 'Grandmum'. Eliza took to Elli quickly, if she hadn't known better she couldve believed that Elli was actually her own child; she loved her like she was none the less.
But today was the day they came back from recording, and she was nervous as hell. On one hand she couldn't wait to see Frank and Mikey who she talked to frequently, but on the other hand she was scared of seeing Gerard again. He rang on occasion, but talked to Elli mostly, any conversation that passed through Eliza and him usually ended after the greetings.
Eliza sighed and hit her head on the steering wheel a few times, she knew she was procrastinating; trying to put off the inevitable, but she could help it. With one last sigh she dragged herself out of the car and locked it before heading up to the building before her. She smoothed her waitress apron out before pushing open the rainbow coloured door and entering into the child infested room.
She looked around momentarily and spotted a woman around her age that she knew to be called Veronica, packing building blocks back into a box. Veronica turned around sensing someone was there and waved when she saw Eliza. She got up and tottered over to the counter which was situated by the door.
"How you going Liz?" Veronica asked as she open the sign out book and flicked to today's date. Eliza shrugged and leant on the counter casually, she was glad it was Veronica here today; all of the other workers here seemed to have their reservations about her.
"That good huh?" Veronica sniggered as she began to fill out the necessary paperwork quickly.
"Yeah that good, hey Elli won't be in tomorrow because her Dad comes home today and want's to spend time with her," Eliza informed Veronica who nodded and told her that she'd write it down somewhere.
"Well I'm done, just sign here and I'll go get your darling daughter," said Veronica chirpily as she handed Eliza a pen and scurried off to find Elli. Eliza signed the book and pushed it back behind the counter as Elli came running excitedly around the corner bearing a huge grin on her face.
"Daddy comes home today!" she squealed as she latched onto Eliza and squeezed her middle. Eliza smiled and ran her fingers through the child's soft hair.
"That's right, so go get your bag and we'll go see Daddy, yeah?" she said as Elli nodded eagerly and ran off to the locker room to get her Misfits backpack that Frank had bought her in New York and sent over. Within seconds Elli came tearing around the corner again with her bag.
"To Daddy!" she yelled as she grabbed Eliza's hand and hauled her out of the centre. Eliza gave an awkward wave to Veronica as she ran along side Elli towards the car.
They had barely came to a stop in the driveway when Elli threw open her door and ran up to the porch to ring the doorbell. Eliza sighed and took a deep breath as she got out and followed in tow, her pulse rate increasing with every step she took. The front door opened just as she reached the top step and Elli through herself inside, ignoring the person who answered the door, in search of her father.
"Hello to you to?" Mikey laughed as he watched her disappear up the stairs. He turned back to Eliza and smiled as he opened his arms.
"Do I get a hug from you at least?" he asked with a goofy grin.
"I dunno, it might cost you," she joked as he feigned hurt. She laughed and embraced him in a tight hug, her and Mikey had managed to become pretty close again, they talked a lot while the guys were away recording, but not as much as she talked to Frank of course.
"Come in then, I've got some coffee brewing," said Mikey as he stepped aside and motioned for her to come in. She stepped inside and waited for him to lead her into the kitchen even though she knew where it was. She sat down at the table and watched as he poured out fresh coffee into two mugs, every now and then she heard a laugh and a squeal come from upstairs.
"So I see you're still working at that place," Mikey said as he placed the mugs on the table and indicated Elizas attire. Eliza took the mug gratefully and gave a small shrug, she had taken the job just after the guys had left, it wasn't anything fancy but it gave her the finance she needed.
"Yeh, it's money though, I mean I don't want to live off Linda forever you know and with Elli there and everything," Eliza replied.
"How is Linda anyway?" Mikey asked as he sipped his coffee.
"Yeh good, she really loves Elli though, she's like an actual grandchild to her," Eliza mused as a small smile crawled onto her face.
"That's good then, so Elli likes it there and everything?" Mikey questioned.
"Yeah she does, I don't know where Hope and her were living but she acts as if she's a princess now in a mansion," Eliza laughed, though there was a slight bitterness to it at the mention of Hope. Mikey smiled and pushed up his glasses, it was one of the first times Eliza had even acknowledged her sister since everything had happened.
"How was recording though, going to have a smash hit?" Eliza asked, deciding to change the topic before they sent themselves into an awkward silence.
"Ha you never know. We got to work with some pretty cool people and it was way more organised than when we did bullets, I still can't believe Gerard managed again to come out with such good lyrics," Mikey said excitedly, but his face slipped when he looked at Eliza's whose had gone blank.
"That's...really good Mikes," she said forcefully as she looked down into her mug and watched the brown liquid spin as she gently moved her hand around. Mikey sighed and reached his hand over to take hers.
"He'll come round, give him time," Mikey said softly, referring to Gerard. Eliza nodded and looked up from her mug, offering Mikey a weak smile.
"I know Mikes, it's just hard," she replied. He nodded in understanding and let go of her hand so he could take another drink from his coffee.
"I suppose my dear Frank is at home then?" Eliza asked as she finished off her coffee and got up to put the empty mug in the sink.
"Yeah I'm pretty sure that's where he went," Mikey replied as he did the same and stood up next to her. She nodded and hugged him again.
"Thanks for the coffee; I'll see you around sometime...er...ring me when he needs Elli off his hands ok?" Eliza said as she tilted her head towards the stairs. Mikey nodded and walked her to the door, waving her off as she reversed out of the driveway and headed home. She thought about what had just happened and her insides curled as she thought of Gerard; he was a few meters away and he didn't even bother coming down to say hello, she had to admit she was disappointed even though she had been scared to see him; now she was even more so.
