He won the title of Grand Champion by defeating Kung Lao, a Shaolin fighting monk. It was during this period that the tournament fell into Shang Tsung's hands and was corrupted. It is time once again for the ancient Shaolin Tournament known as Mortal Kombat. Held once every generation, the Earth's greatest fighters pitthemselves against the twisted Outworld adversaries. Story 500 years ago, Shang Tsung was banished to the earth realm. With the aid of Goro he was to unbalance the furies and boom the planet to a chaotic existence. By seizing control of the Shaolin Tournament he tried to tip the scales of order towards chaos. Only seven warriors survived the battles and Shang Tsung's scheme would come to a violent end at the hands of Liu Kang. Facing execution for his failure and the apparent death of Goro, Tsung convinces Shao Kahn to grant him a second chance. Shang Tsung's new plan is to lure his enemies to compete in the Outworld where they will meet certain death by Shao Kahn himself.

Your Earth is being governed by the gods of the Outworld! These are the words of Raiden... For centuries Earth has used Mortal Kombat to defend itself against the Outworld emperor Shao Kahn. But, Shao Kahn has become frustrated by the failed attempts at taking Earth through tournament battle. He enacts a plan which began 10,000 years ago. During this time, Kahn had a queen named Sindel, but she died at a very young age. Kahn's shadow priests lead by Shang Tsung, make it so Sindel's spirit will someday be reborn, but not on the Outworld, but on the Earth realm itself. This unholy act enables Shao Kahn to step through the dimensional gates and reclaim his queen. Thus enabling him to seize the Earth realm at last. Upon breaching the portal onto Earth, Shao Kahn slowly transforms Earth into part of the Outworld itself. Kahn strips the Earth of all human life, and claims all the souls his own. The remaining humans are scattered throughout the planet. These are the selected warriors that must defend Earth once again. Characters:

                                                        Story

For nine generations, the Mortal Kombat tournament was ruled by the Outworld's finest Warrior, Prince Goro. It was agreed that if the Outworld could claim victory in 10 consecutive tournaments, it would then rule the Earth. With the Earth on the brink of destruction, a new generation of Warriors gathered and claimed victory.

With victory in hand, Warrior monk, Liu Kang, had now become the new champion. But his victory was short lived. He and his comrades were lured into the Outworld to compete in a second Tournament. But Liu Kang and his comrades discovered an evil deception. The Tournament was merely a diversion devised by the Dark Emperor, Shao Kahn, to break the rules set forth by the Elder Gods. The Dark Emperor would witness the reincarnation of his former Queen, Sindel. This unholy act gave Shao Kahn the power to step through the dimensional gates to reclaim his Queen and seize control of the Earth.

This Trilogy of events comprises Shao Kahn's final attempt at taking control of the Earth.
