Hello fellow music junkies!
Here’s the Malera article/interview as promised.
Malera is an unsigned band hailing from Aberdeen, Scotland. The band is currently made up by Will and Beave on the guitar, Paul on the drums, and Ash on vocals. They’re looking for a new bassist so if you happen to be in their corner of the world and you think you’re good contact them!
Rose, the owner, and I were able to interview Ash, Will and Paul this morning so here you go metal heads!
Michelle:
How long have you been playing together?
Will:
id say round about 18 - 24 months
Ash:
yeah nearly two years
Will:
we spent the first year maybe trying to get the full band together and all the songs sorted/written etc
Will:
but the current lineup of members is who has been here the longest
Rose:
I'm assuming you guys were freinds for a while before you started playing together?
Ash:
Nah I hated them
Ash:
but I had no choice but to join em
Will:
no actually
me, paul are brothers and we've known beave since childhood. We found ash singing in a local bar on a karaoke night
Ash:
Not singing its raining men I will stress
Will:
he was singing bodies and the first scream caught our attention lol
Ash:
I was doing Drowning pools bodies I was so fuckign wasted I got off the stage and will was like wanna join our band and I wwas very confused but I said yeah
Michelle:
Is there any meaning behind your band's name?
Paul:
its the name of a cannon on a naval ship
Will:
he's been wanting to use it for a band name for 8 years
Ash:
Old ww2 ship wasnt it serving in the japanese coast
Will:
correct ash
Will:
well done
Ash:
D'awwww do I get my gold star now
Rose:
so what originally inspired you guys to be musicians?
Ash:
Erm Ive always been in a musical family my mother would sing the kinda songs that would make you wanna kill yourself after five minutes but slowly it started to inspire me to persue singing as a hobby
Will:
paul was the only one in his year at school that cud play drums with any skill so he decided to take it up. Me on the other hand, randomly decided to start playing instruments at a young age. I eventually got into the guitar and starting a band together just kinda happened
Michelle:
How would you describe your sound?
Will:
a sonic wrecking ball hehe
Will:
its hard to say really cause we dont think it sounds like typical genre's
Ash:
Yeah we kinda play what sounds good to us we dont particularly follow any specific trends
Will:
a mix of this and that. grind, nu metal, black metal
Ash:
I would say its like Being fucked in one ear by a chainsaw while someone shouts melodically in the other
Michelle:
You recently released your EP, yes?
Ash:
Indeed
Michelle:
How's it doing?
Will:
ash is mainly the one dealing with the promotion and distrubution etc so ill let him take that one
Ash:
Not too bad not as good as we'd have hoped but considering we didnt follow up the EP with a tour we're selling a few copies
Will:
yeh, not gigging atm is not helping the sales but they're doing fine considering its just a little online promo for it
Ash:
which btw Malera E.P available to buy on ebay buy it now or we will eat your children
Will:
ive already eaten some.....
Ash:
Yes thats how serious we are we will eat one child every day untill 50 copies are sold at least
Ash:
The E.P is really good value for money tho I know oviously Im biased but 3 pound for a descent quality cd is a deal especially with local bands charging atleast 6-7 pounds maybe more thats like 13-15 bucks
Michelle:
Do you guys plan on touring in the near future?
Will:
we do hope to tour soon. we just have to get things sorted first
Ash:
Yes touring hopefully next year at some point but we have suffered some set backs so its hard to project
Rose:
i saw on your website that you guys played with napalm death... what was that like?
Will:
It was really awsome. It was only our 3rd gig so we were lucky to get it. They were cool guys and a couple of them signed CDs for us
Will:
we would sit and chat with a couple of them upstairs outside the dressing rooms
Ash:
Yeah it was intense especially with those guys being at least 20 years our senior musicianshipwise we held our own I think playing along side a seasoned band really pushed us to raise the bar in our selves and put on a more aggressive intense show
Michelle:
What are some bands that inspire your group as a whole?
Will:
mine include - children of bodom, graveworm, in flames, dimmu borgir, marilyn manson, soad
Will:
paul likes pretty much the same as me but add in stuff like, chimera, fear factory and divine heresy
Ash:
For me its not so much bands that inspire so much as musicians I guess because theirs a sort of your the drummer I aint guna tell you how to do your job so theirs like this whole you take influence from a bands musician you like opposed to going ok System inspires us lets all trying and sound like system
Ash:
So yeah erm for me vocally my biggest influences are Chad gray for sure and corey taylor, bands that inspire me are slipknot, drowning pool, mudvayne, Inflames, 8 foot sativa and Lamb of God
Michelle:
Where do you see your band being in 5 years?
Will:
ill be happy if we are touring around the world (with a record contract ofc). I dont care about being rich and famous, as long as I can make enough to stay alive while touring.
Will:
and be reasonably comfortable! i dont want to be shitting into a metal bucket (not referring to the song!) at the side of the road lol
Ash:
I see us with a better stronger set more E.P's hopefully a album at that point, touring for sure at the end of the day thats where its at going to places and playign to different crowds its awesome
Will:
thx everyone but its time for me to leave. If u stay ash, dont make too much of an ass of urself
Will:
Its been a pleasure and I hope to have a catchup soon with u all
Michelle:
Before you go is there anything you want to say to the readers?
Will:
I would like to say thanks very much to all the fans who support us and continue to do so. It really means a lot to me that people appreciate all the effort we put into making the songs and actually buy our songs and play them
Ash:
It means alot to the band
Michelle:
Thank you SO much for letting us ask questions.
Rose:
well thanks alot for taking the time to talk with us, we aprrieciate it
Michelle:
Definitely. I jumped up and down when you guys said you'd do it.
Rose:
yeah and she e-jumped up and down all over my inbox
Michelle:
Lol shut up rose.
Ash:
Ok so anything else you ladies would like to know
Michelle:
Who does most of the composing in the band?
Ash:
Its a group effort really, no one person does any more work than the others.usually what happens is will and Beave get togetehr brain storm alil jam and toss ideas about Paul comes in and come sup with drums and will have a listen to what beave and will are doing and make suggestions and I come in last once drums and guitars are written up but I will keep a finger on the pulse of whats happening
Rose:
of the gigs you've done, any that stick out? any crazy stories?
Ash:
Ok the one gig that stands out is a gig we did at the moorings it was so fucking hot but the energy off the crowd was incredible they responded to us so well and just went crazy for us.
Ash:
As for a crazy story we were doing a gig in Drummonds in Aberdeen and their was this insane blonde lady kinda looked like a toothless junky valkyrie with blond pigtails. ANyway she lock eyes onto will and came up to him while he was setting up on stage and I was stood nearby making a set list and she said to him
Ash:
Whose the bassist
Ash:
and will's like he's away at the moment and she was like I will kick your asses on the bass anyday of the week and we're like hes a guitarist he doesnt care .
Ash:
Anyway she spent the entire night trying to get back stage, offering drugs to people and sex and she had the most fuckign demented lauigh in the world
Ash:
sounded like the wicked witch of the west being grounded up in a shredder
Ash:
Sufficed to say after cracking onto everyone within sight including yours truely she disapeared but she was a bizarre misplaced person if she had an axe shed have killed us all
Michelle:
fun times
Rose:
wow lol
Ash:
we always get one nut at a gig
Rose:
when you guys perform, whats more important, having fun or sounding 'perfect'?
Ash:
erm actually its sounding as best we can as close to perfect as we can get. We're dedicated musicians and we really do beat ourselves up if we sound bad or put on a good show to us having fun is playing well sounding amazing. Then we know the crowds enjoying it and having fun and in turn we have fun. Its no fun playing a gig with a shit sound system and your playing sloppy you feel youve let the crowd down. Because they're paying to see a good show and have a good time and as performing musicians we have to deliver that as best we can.
Michelle:
Is there any particular message the band tries to spread when playing gigs?
Ash:
Our message I feel is very important in this day n Age where the value of individuality, personal/national identity and freedom of speech are constantly under threat from both outside and internal elements. From outside elements who try imposing their ridiculous ideals upon us to internal elements that try to make us not say certain words, or wear certain items of clothing. Its also a message against ridicule from said element aswell to enforce the belief we all have a right to look and think the way we want to without being mocked or felt less in anyway because of it.
Ash:
Our message is about standing up to the man and any other motherfucker that tries to fuck with you or your rights and telling them to fuck off.
So, As you can see, this is a group of funny down-to-earth guys who love music and rock at what they do. Along with having a refreshingly original sound, Malera’s members appreciate their fans and love what they do.
Be sure to support them by purchasing their EP, and, if you’re ever in Scotland drop by one of their shows and tell them we say hi.
