Firstly, before I go any further, I must point out that Therianthropy is NOT just a spiritual thing- although most communities are often dominated by those in touch with the more spiritual side of it.

I can hear all you not Spiritual people and non believers breathing a sigh of relief. Therianthropy is more than just a spiritual thing. It is deeper than that. Deeper than mental and more instinctual than anything else.

So, what exactly is Therianthropy, in non-spiritual terms?

Therianthropy, just like being ambidextrous or very artistic, it is one of those things that you either are born into or are not. And just like being ambidextrous and artistic, it is not something you can force your self into, or become. It just isn't possible. Why? It is a matter of predisposition and chance. Some people just have indescribably deep instinctual and mental connections with certain animals. But, unlike being artistic, therianthropy should not be considered a skill. It has no particular use in life (although some may tell you different), nor does it give you any major advantages over others. It is certainly not a gift nor a curse. It just is- therianthropy.

The general rule for someone being a Therianthrope is that they do indeed have this deep bond (be it spiritual, mental, instinctual or whatever) with a certain animal or more. It should never ever be considered just a passion, or a love for that animal. There is far more to it than that. Even those who believe it just a mental state and another part to them selves which plays no major part in life will tell you that.

So, what can a non-spiritual Therian do? If you don't believe in spirituality, and are even against just sitting down and letting your therianthropic feelings wash over you, a good tip and pastime is to find out about the animal they associate with. Researching an animal may be very much like discovering something about your self which you may have well missed out. Spending time (if possible) with ones considered phenotype, or an animal which is a close relative of, may also be highly beneficial to the person in question.

The net is a great place to find other people with the same beliefs. A small amount of time spent talking to other people may help a lot.
