NEWS:
Ok, I haven't updated
this in a long time, but I'm working on it now. Here's what is going to
happen:
To simplify the reading
and dating, I am going to list the guitars under each album name, but
merely as a time period. It won't always be a studio/live setup, but if
a certain guitar requires further info it will be included in the
Notes/Quotes section. Also, the first time a guitar is introduced will
be the only time full details will be given. For example, The Black
gibson flying V used on the first four albums. The details for this
guitar will only be under Kill Em All and only the name will be listed
on later albums.

Studio
- Black Gibson Flying V
- Cherry Gibson Flying V
1 Seymore Duncan pickup
2 volume controls, 1 tone control
- Black Fernandes Flying V
1 bridge pickup
1 volume control, 1 tone

Notes/Quotes
- "I'm mostly using custom ESP
neck through body Strats with two EMG humbuckers, plus an off-the-rack
'89 Les Paul Custom, which sounds fuckin' great. I'd like to play my
gold top '52 Gibson ES-295 hollowbody through a pre-CBS Fender Deluxe
for my solo on 'The Unforgiven.' I used Bob Rock's '71 blonde Les Paul
for the solo on 'Sad But True,' because we tuned down to D and
it didn't sound as fuzzy as the strats. So far, I haven't used my
Gibson or Jackson Flying V's." Guitar Player, September 1991

Notes/Quotes
- "I used my ESP Signature guitars, my
'58 Les Paul, a Mary Kay Strat, a '62 Strat and a '58 Flying V. There
was also an old Gibson Super 400 and a Reso-matic [Resolectric-MJF].The
bulk of it though was the Les Paul. That's the guitar I always play at
home, the sound is truly incredible and those PAF pickups just kill
me-that guitar doesn't leave my sight! The Mummy is one of my best
sounding guitars. It's just based on a movie poster. On tour, I used to
walk out with it and people just went 'Wow!' " Total Guitar,

Before we get into the
equipment used on St. Anger, I would like to mention that this is a
list of all the gear that can be seen in the studio, not necessarily
everything that Kirk used. He might have used one guitar
just a little or not at all, but since it was in the studio, I wanted
to mention them all. An item marked with a * indicates it was part of
James' main recording setup.

Notes/Quotes
- "I played a 1959 Les Paul
loaded with stock PAF pickups that complemented the tone of James' EMGs
really well. I also used my '59 blonde Tele toploader, which is all
over the album; a Foam green '63 Strat and a Tom Anderson, which I
haven't use since AND JUSTICE FOR ALL." Guitar World, August 2003
