The Sims 2: Open for Business expansion

On Thursday January 12 I  (Mogway) met Tim LeTourneau in Brussels.

The meet & greet was organized by EA Benelux.

Since there was only room for 1 webmaster, DeKDeS decided i could go.

Please note that not all the pictures have a high quality because in the restaurant it was held, it was very dark and the first set of photo's  are taken from a projection on a wall and others are a bit vague because of some dirty laptop screens. We tried to somehow fix some of the photo´s.

Also some pictures showed on this page, are used

with permission from Simsnetwerk / Simsnetwork

Tim showed us a demo of  "Open for Business".

There is going to be a new neighborhood in this expansion.

Bluewater Village is the name of the new neighborhood.

There are already some shops and houses in the new neighborhood that are made by Maxis.

Your sim can also have another job and still own a store.

But the sims you hire for your store, will have to give up their job.

On this picture you can see a sim at work, this sim is hired by the shop owner.

All the bills like paying your personnel their salary, goes automatically.

So make sure you have enough money, because your

personnel will walk away if you can't pay them.

The shop in this demo is a toy shop, you can sell every toy you want that is already available in the catalogue of your game.

Or you can make completely new ones!

Just select a workbench and your sim starts making (in this case)

a toy.

Skills are very important, the more skill you have

the better the object will be, and the more you can make.

The objects you make with the workbench can be moved around within the build mode and then placed in your shop.

With the menu you see on the right, instead of pricing your items one by one, you can set

the price for all the items in your shop at once.

The shop owner opens the shop by turning the open or closed shop sign.

So you can open and close the shop whenever you want.

This might be a potential buyer.

The customers have a buy indicator which is green and showed

above a customers head, the more green you see the more

chance you will have to actually sell this customer something.

When your personnel tries to sell an item to a customer, they gain "sale talent"  regardless if they sell the item or not.

A star above a customers head means loyalty towards your shop.

Looks like they just lost a loyal customer.

(perhaps not shown clearly in this image, but there is a red minus shown besides the star)

This is the perks menu, in this menu you can buy new social options and other stuff.

If your shop raises it's rank, then you are able to buy something

from of this menu.

There are several new social options for personnel and the manager, for instance: can I help you? You can also motivate your personnel so that they feel confident in their jobs, or tell them to get back to work, or even fire them.

You can also decide if your personnel should

wear uniforms, which you can select from another menu (plan business outfit) showed in this image.

You can make knights of your personnel or ninja's or

you can let them wear their own clothes,

it's all up to you.

On the right of the screen there is also a menu.

In this menu you can see your personnel and select them.

You can also see how much you have to pay them, and

what their current assignment is.

This employee has a badge, it means that she is very good in

a certain skill. If you get a badge, you can make new objects at

a certain workbench.

You can decorate the shop to your likings.

There are several new shelves, so you can display your

items as you want.

There is also a special car shelve so you can sell cars.

( the nightlife expansion is required for selling cars)

If you decide to hire a sim you’ll get a new menu,

in this menu you can see how much salary

the new employee gets and the skills of the new employee.

If they don’t have any skills, you don’t have to pay them much.

You can’t change their salary, it depends on how high

their skill level is.

Then Tim took us to the Thompson Family.

To show us how it's like to have a business at home.

All you need is a cash register. You can start any shop at home, but you can also sell the paintings that your sims make.

If you don't want customers to get into your

"private home" you can place a special door with a lock

at the entrance of you private home".

You can also build elevators in your home now.

This is a sample of a salon at home.

As you can see it's more easier to make a split level in your home.

One thing that is changed with the split level is that you can now

still see what is placed below the split level.

If you open a salon you can give anyone a make-over.

You will get a popup with all the hairstyles, make-up and glasses.

So you decide what the sim should look like, you get the same

menu which you get when you change your sim at a mirror.

Depending on how good your skills are the customers will be satisfied or not.

If you want to start a bakery, your sim can cook something.

Then you put it in their inventory, so later you can place it in

a display to sell it.

At home you can also select everything you want to sell, and set the price with a new menu.
These new toys can be made with the toy bench.

This is a new robot, the hydro robot.

It helps you water your plants, so you don't need

a gardener anymore.

You can make robots with the robot bench, if your skill is high enough you’ll get a perfectly working robot, if not you’ll make a broken robot, it’s said that broken robots a really funny.

This is the new cleaning robot, so you don't need a maid anymore.
The robot on the left is part of the family.

(I don't know it's name yet)

This is a new toy: the water wiggler.

Everyone can play with it even robots and elders!

All this toys is made with the toy bench, and the better your skill is the better the toy will be.

Kids can start their own small business with a

lemonade stand.

Tim set the price ridiculously high.

There are also awnings in OFB.
You can build awnings in any shape you like.

You can also put some statues on the roof.

At the front of the house you can see some new

roof types.

There are several new roof types, as you can see in the roof menu.
After the demo, it was time for a nice picture :D

Who am I? Well I'm standing behind the pillar with the blue blouse.

After the picture it was time to play OFB ourselves.

This is a new hair style for female kids.

Also there is a lot of new clothing for kids.
This is just to cute for words.
A bear suite for toddlers.
Also teens have new hair types and clothing.
Also the males have new haircuts.
Even the elders have new hair types.
Or you can choose to dress them up like knights.
This is going to be on of my favorite hair type.

When you go to your lot you can now see some

more details about your lot.

Another picture with a split level.
This is the salon chair, behind it stands a new couch.

Also they made some new closets, if you recognize this one then

you're right there is already a 2 door version.

Also 2 new beds, but no new covers.
New couches and chairs.
There are some new kitchen cupboards and a dinning table.
And of course new side tables.
There are towels in this expansion!

And of course a picture of the different shelves you have in

this expansion.

Again awnings, you can place them anywhere.
There are 3 workbenches, the flower bench, the toy bench  and the robot bench.

Here you can see that the sim gained some skill, now he can

make more toys.

Some new statues you can buy for your shop or your garden.

At the end of the meeting we got a little present.

Everyone had another signature from Tim.

Additional information:

  • All the new toys you've seen are not buyable in the catalogue, you'll have to make them yourself with a toy bench

  • According to Tim there are no new cheats in this expansion.

  • Sims at the university can own their own business at campus. But there is no special college for owning a business.

  • Also there are no new carriers in Open for Business.

  • There are new wants and fears, but no new life wishes.

  • At home everything is been arranged by the telephone, you can purchase a community lot through the telephone and even get a deed.

  • It may be possible to sell the deed to another member of the family but that is not yet confirmed.

  • Most fans have been asking if the vegetable gardens will be back, Tim said that they will be back but he doesn’t know when.

  • It is possible to woohoo in the elevator

Well that's about it, of course there is more to explore but I didn't want to tell you everything there is to know about OFB.

That would take the fun away when you play it the 1st time.

I hope you enjoyed this "preview" .

I know I had a lot of fun that day :D

Again I want to thank EA Benelux for this wonderful day and experience!
