What is Diversity?

I looked up diversity in the dictionary. It said that diversity was "variety". This definition agrees with my personal definition. If you have a diverse group it is a group with a lot of different kinds of things in it. Diversity is often used when talking about people. A group of people can be diverse if it includes mixed genders, varying ages, or different religions. There are other things that can make a group diverse. However, the most popular thing is race. When Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of diversity, he was usually talking about racial diversity.

What does it mean if your community is diverse?

A community can be diverse in many ways. The people could be diverse in varying ages, wealth, race, or religion. The community would not be overwhelmed by a majority of the population being a certain one of these groups. For instance, a retirement community would not be considered diverse by some because all of the inhabitants are of a certain age. Looking closer however, one might find that the there were some Christians, some Jews, some Muslims, and many inhabitants of various religions. The community, then, would be diverse in religion, but not necessarily in age. All members should be aware and accepting of everyone in the community.
