CALL FOR PAPERS

Inviting scholarly contributions for the Volume 7, No. 2, December 2007 (and subsequent) issue of the Malaysian Journal of Educational Technology

MALAYSIAN JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY - ISSN 1675 0292

The inaugural issue of the Malaysian Journal of Educational Technology (MJET), Volume 1, Number 1, June 2001, was launched by the Sec. General of the Ministry of Education, Malaysia at the 14th National Educational Technology Convention held in Klang, Selangor Darul Ehsan on the 12th September 2001.

The Malaysian Journal of Educational Technology (my.JET) (ISSN 1675-0292) is published by the Malaysian Educational Technology Association (META) as one aspect of its function to encourage the publication of educational technology related research, survey, models as well as the dissemination of information about the educational and information and communication technology.

The Patron of the Malaysian Journal of Educational Technology is the Minister of Education, Ministry of Education, Malaysia, while the Advisor of the journal is the Director of the Educational Technology Division (ETD) of Ministry of Education, Malaysia. The aim of this publication is to share with fellow academics and researchers the contributions to the Malaysian Journal of Educational Technology, both locally and abroad.

Other than the normal scholarly contributions, occasional Special Issues with Guest Editorship is published, such as a Special Issue from a conference, to capture the trend of the occasion for the benefit of the journal. Nothing would be too minor for us to consider as we are too aware of the diversity of the application of educational technology globally. Naturally, the more advanced countries would be talking about cyberspace, the Internet and even artificial intelligence while the beginners would be elated just to receive a radio set for the purpose of an educational transaction. Contributions have thus far been received from 13 countries (including Malaysia) and the Malaysian Journal of Educational Technology has published 50 articles up to Volume 4, Number 2, December 2004.

The Malaysian Journal of Educational Technology is an international, peer-reviewed publication of the Malaysian Educational Technology Association (META) - ISSN 1675 0292

MALAYSIAN EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION [META]

In a convention organised by the Educational Technology Division (ETD) of the Ministry of Education, Malaysia (MMOE) from 18-20 June 1987 at the Institut Aminuddin Baki (formerly known as Institut Pengurusan Pendidikan Malaysia), Genting Highlands, a working paper related to the establishment of the Malaysian Educational Technology Association was presented by Puan Sri Datin Hafsah Hj Nasir, then director of the ETD, MMOE.

The proposal to set up the association was overwhelmingly accepted by the delegates and a pro-tem committee was appointed to explore the possibility of establishing it and subsequently undertaking the necessary preparatory tasks. The pro-tem committee met several times and this paved the way for the establishment of the association. Finally, on 30 September 1988, the Malaysian Educational Technology Association (META) was formerly registered. The Chairman of the Pro-Tem Committee, Puan Sri Dr Rohana Zubir, was appointed as the Chairman of META and the Pro-Tem Committee evolved into the permanent executive council of the newly established association.

META was established with the aim of establishing a platform that enables educators and individuals interested in educational technology to exchange ideas to collaborate in efforts to promote the usage and application of various aspects of educational technology at every level in the educational system, from pre-school to higher education. Specifically, META was established with eight objectives which are stipulated in its statute to:

  • Encourage the development of educational technology so as to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, training and  educational management.
  • Encourage research in the area related to the educational technology.
  • Encourage the production of various relevant resources and the dissemination of information pertaining to their application.
  • Provide a platform for the dissemination of knowledge related to the advancement of educational technology through publication and the circulation of print and non-print materials.
  • Organise meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences with the aim of exchanging ideas and views among members and experts in the area of educational technology.
  • Facilitate participation of members in conferences and collaboration with other establishment/organisations associated with educational technology locally and internationally.
  • Organise visits to agencies related to educational technology and provide training and hold exhibitions in the related area.
  • Provide advisory and consultancy services to relevant parties interested in educational technology.
In line with the above objectives, META has, since its inception, successfully undertaken the following activities:
  • Organising the National Educational Technology Convention with a specific theme annually. This includes a convention at the Asia-Pacific level which was successfully organised in 1992 in Penang and another meeting at the ASEAN level in 1994 in Pulau Langkawi. The annual convention has been the association’s main activity and it has received encouraging responses from members and educators at all levels. Since 1991, META has received cooperation and support from state education departments, state education resource centres and institutions of higher learning and this has enabled the convention to be organised and held in succession by the various states.
  • Organising an annual competition involving teaching and learning resource materials for usage at primary and secondary schools as well as at institutions of higher learning. The competition is organised by META on behalf of the ETD. At the early stage, the competition focused on print material development but currently, it has moved forward to include teaching and learning resources in the multimedia and Web-based formats.
  • Publishing reading and reference materials specifically in educational technology. The association has been publishing the Proceedings of the META Convention annually and in the year 2001, it published its journal – the Malaysian Journal of Educational Technology -- that has received considerable and positive responses from local and international contributors. The association has also been publishing books that have been considered useful as references for educators in Malaysia.
