SCHOOL OF DISTANCE EDUCATION, UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA
|

The School of Distance Education
(SDE) Universiti Sains Malaysia, previously known as the Centre for
Off-Campus Studies was established in 1971 to provide opportunities for
working adults to obtain tertiary education.
Through this innovative
education approach, working adults are able to undertake undergraduate
courses while remaining in full-time employment. It is the pioneer
program in Malaysia which offers degree through distance education.
Currently, four undergraduate programs are available via distance
education, namely Sciences, social sciences, arts and management.
Offering the programs via distance education will be a natural response
to the demands of the many prospective students requiring flexibility
in terms of time and place of study. SDE also conducts short courses
under its Continuing Education program such as Self-instructional
Module Writing, Basics of Management, Distance Education, Banking,
English Language and Accountancy. For undergraduate courses, students
spend a minimum of 4 years to complete their program. They are required
to attend a compulsory on- campus intensive course between 2 – 4 weeks
at the Universiti Sains Malaysia main campus in the month of
September/October. Print material is the main medium use in the courses
delivery which is supplement by other media such as video, audio and
audiographic. SDE USM is the pioneer in offering distance education by
using multimedia applications, audioconferencing, videoconferencing,
internet access, virtual library and radio programmes.
The SDE is in the process of transforming all of its printed material
into a virtual library. The existing boardroom videoconferencing
facility may also be expanded to accommodate desktop videoconferencing,
thus enabling more personal/confidential lecturer- student and
lecturer-lecturer communications. When combined with existing
communication facilities (mail, telephone , fax and e-mail), a full
complement of communication capabilities will be available at SDE.
Learning teaching activities and practical classes by part time tutors
are carried out at the 20 regional centres throughout the country. Thus
far, the school has successfully produced 6153 graduates.
SDE has established both formal and informal links with distance
education institutions from various parts of the world such as The
British Open University, United Kingdom, the Open Learning Agency and
the Commonwealth of Learning in Canada, North Carolina State
University, USA, The National Institute of Multimedia Education, Japan,
University Terbuka Indonesia and American Center for the Study of
Distance Education, Penn State University, USA. In line with USM’s
vision of competing at global level and in viewing current developments
in distance education, SDE USM as the pioneer distance education in
Malaysia is committed to maintaining professional excellence. This is
in keeping with our vision 2020, and in the attempt to make the school
a center of excellence in distance education in the region.
