We had wanted a dog for ages but we both worked full time so it wouldn’t have been fair on the dog. Then my wife changed her job and decided we could look after a dog properly so we started looking for a puppy. I wanted to breed dogs thirty years ago but family and other commitments wouldn’t allow it so now I’m doing something I really want and love to do.
Way back then I had a Pyrenean Mountain Dog called Bear. They take up a lot of room and as much as I love big dogs we decided to have a smaller one. My wife wanted Yorkshire Terriers because she had had them before so we set off towards Great Yarmouth to see a litter. When we got there the lady had more than one sort of dog, all in pens and we were not very impressed with what we saw. We did look around at the puppies and I spotted a litter of West Highland Terrier puppies. We didn’t buy a puppy. They were not looked after the way we thought they should be. Later on we talked about the puppies and I asked my wife if she would like a Westie.
Changing her mind was not easy!
We read about a lady in Norfolk that bred West Highlands and she had a litter for sale, so off we went and who couldn’t fall in love with them; little bundles of pure white fluff. Well, three hours later we had bought a little girl it was so hard to choose but this little puppy in a way picked us. She kept on coming over to us and the breeder said “I think she has chosen you”. I loved the way the breeder had all that time for us and was so patient and we are forever grateful to her.
Next came naming our extra addition to the family. In time we settled on Jessie, which suited her and she was and still is a little darling. Like all dogs she loves to play chase and as we are not so young, I would chase Jess around the garden pond and got puffed out and I had to rest for a while so then my wife would have a go at chasing her and this went on all summer. So we decided that Jess should have a little play mate to chase her.
We started looking for another Westie but couldn’t find one anywhere. We searched and didn’t mind travelling long distances to look at the puppies. Another six months went by, and then we heard of a litter in
Well, in time some friends asked if we were going to breed from Jess and Luke. Because they both have wonderful temperaments and are so loving and we wanted a puppy from them we decided to let Jess have one litter of puppies. In between time I had an accident and was off work when Jessie had her puppies. I knew then that this is what I always wanted to do and my dreams have come true. I’m still doing the same thing today; it’s what I love best and I’m loving every minute of it.
I try to keep in contact with all the people that buy a puppy from us with a phone call from time to time. Just because the puppies have gone to their new homes doesn’t mean I stop caring about them and wondering how they are doing. I ask the new owners if they wouldn’t mind keeping in touch and send pictures of the puppies as they grow and a lot do.
We even have people that bring their pets back to show us how they are doing and they are always welcome. We have a chat and a cup of tea and I’m happy to know I have bred a wonderful little Westie and both the puppy and the owner are very happy.
