Averie was born on December 9th, 2006 weighing 7 pounds 8 ounces. She was born at St. Josephs Hospital in Hamilton Ontario. The day started out like any other. I started to have contractions but they weren't 5 minutes apart and everytime that I would stand up, they would go away. Finally after I had sent Albert to work I decided to go to the hospital. When I got there I was checked and they told me that I was 7 cm diatlated. I called Albert at work and told him to come right away. I then called my parents, Alberts parents and sister and Lisa and Ernie. Once everyone got to the hospital we just waited until it was time. The doctor kept coming in and saying that Averie's heart was "flat" and they kept asking me if it was my heart medicine that I was on was affecting her. I said I dont think so because my son never had that problem. Finally after 2 hours or so they decided to break my water to see if she would come sooner. After 2 more hours they decided that it was time to take her by C-Section. I was so upset. After she was born they wisked her away to another room. I never thought anything of it. After a while they came in to tell us that she wasn't breathing at birth and it took 5 minutes to revive her. They told us that she was in bad shape and that she had to be transferred to McMaster Children's Hospital. Since I had just had her I had to wait till the next day to be transferred to that hospital to be with her. It was so hard. The next day I was transferred to MAC at 1:00pm. It was so good to be near my baby. It took a couple of hours before I got to see her because when I got to MAC I was in a lot of pain and they needed to manage it before I could even get up and walk. I don't remember a whole lot while being there. I know that when I saw her I cried. That was the first time that I have really seen her. She was so swollen. The Doctor told us that she has fetal hydrops and that is why she is so swollen. She was hooked up to everything. She struggled at MAC while she was there so they decided to send her to Sick Kids hospital in Toronto. The night that she was to be transferred there, they told us that she was in heart failure. I got them to call my parents and brother and tell them to come right away. They also called Albert's parents and sister to come. I felt that if they didn't come...that they would never get to see her. Before they transferred her we got to spend time together. It was sad because I knew that I wouldn't be able to see her for another couple of days as I was still recuperating from the C-Section. Albert was able to go the next day to see her. He came back with bad news. The doctors didn't expect her to survive. Lisa called our pastor and they came to pray with us. On Wednesday I was discharged and was able to go to Toronto to visit her. Albert's parents and sister was already there. Finally I got to go in to see her. The doctors told us what her problems were. It seemed that she was improving since she got there. Albert and I continued to get some good reports and we were excited. We had a meeting with the doctor and she said that Averie seems to have pulled through the rough patches and should be okay. Two days later she had a different doctor who said she was in bad shape. He said "Haven't you seen her X-ray for her heart?" We said No. He showed us that her heart filled her whole chest. We kind of new then that things weren't good. That night, I prayed that God would heal her completely or take her. I didn't want her to suffer. On Christmas Day the doctor called and said that we should come and that they think that she had a brain hemorrage. My mom called and said that she wanted to come. When we got there we went to see her. The doctor then brought us to another room and told us that Averie was dying and asked us if we wanted them to bring her in to us. We decided that we wanted her then. The nurse handed her to me and I got her last two breaths. That was the first time that I held Averie. I was never allowed due to the tubes. I felt like it was a dream. Lisa and Ernie came up right away. Albert's Dad made it up too. We all got a chance to hold her. Lisa called my pastor and he drove 2 and a half hours to get there. I got to bath her and the nurses made hand and foot molds. I held her for a long time. I didn't want to let her go but I knew that I had to. We left the hospital and it was a very quiet ride home. The next day Aunt Gail helped us prepare her funeral. We had the visitation at the funeral home and the funeral at my church. The funeral was beautiful. We had the song Held by Natalie Grant played and I had Lisa read a letter that I wrote to Averie. Over 200 people came to the visitation and funeral. We are so thankful to have her for 16 days. My Obsetrician can't believe what has happened since I had a perfect pregnancy. Nothing showed up on the ultrasound. I guess its just one of those things. We are thankful for all the support of our family and friends. Without them and God, we couldn't go on.
