Heya people! There's a band that plays at work regularly that I just wanted to promote, not just for their sake, but because I really think you should have a look. The band's name is "Lowrider", and these guys are absolutely incredible, very, VERY talented. The band are a mixture of lounge and groove, with a hint of funk to boot, and they work brilliantly together.
Regularly, these guys play lounge and groove versions of popular songs from anywhere from Stevie Wonder to (SHOCK! HORROR!) Justin Timberlake. Normally Timberlake is enough to make me want to churn by simply hearing his name, let alone his MUSIC; but amazingly their version of "Senorita" sounds incredible, and they take it away with amazing solos and bridges that never get uninteresting. In fact, their version of "Senorita", IMHO, is the best of them all. I live with the shame of loving a Timberlake remake and stating this publicly, but it's for a good cause. These guys truly deserve all the support they can get. After years of being around pubs, clubs and hotels due to my father's security company, and after 4 years of working in two of the biggest hotels in Adelaide; I firmly state that these guys are the best band in Adelaide, if not one of.
John Bartlett, on keys and synths, is a musical mastermind, utilising the power of beethoven to form the basis for his solos, some more obvious than others (if you want obvious, check "Wild World"). In lounge and groove, it's obvious a talented pianist is required. If you can find a better one around, let me know, because I'd be damned if there is, and I've been on the keys for twelve years. The band's version of "You Really Got Me" sums up his talent perfectly.
Paul Bartlett, on drums, provides everything from the cool, laid back nature of "Wild World" to the clear-cut, funky beats of "Sexual Healing". The band very clearly relies upon Paul's expertise, particularly within "Senorita". The variations in rhythm and wicked solos within Lowrider's music are aplenty, and Paul is quite clearly behind the steering wheel. The silent communication between Paul and Joe (vocals) on stage is brilliant; as both know exactly what they want out of every song, and never keep each other out of the loop when they break away from the traditional nature of the song to do their own thing.
No lounge or groove is ever complete without bass, and Scott Duncan fills the void and thensome. Without his talent, songs such as "Chameleon" and "Senorita" would never be the same, and the lounge songs simply wouldn't be lounge. My only concern is that he never gets the chance to truly show the full capacity of his obvious expertise, but that's the life of a bass player. Give him a funky bridge or solo to work with, however, and you'll know for sure he means business. Duncan is the passion in Lounge, and the funk in their more upbeat songs. Without him, not only would the band not be the same, it would cease to function. In Scott we trust.
Finally, Joe Braithwaite takes the spotlight in lead vocals. Forget your Australian Idol junk, Joe has REAL talent. Their website describes his talent perfectly. "The voice of an angel to the roar of a rockstar" couldn't be any more correct. His passion in all his songs is astounding, and can sing with the soul of Seal, to the powerful, dirty rock vocals of Joe Cocker. Quite simply, Joe can do it all. Every song he sings is a brilliant example of his talent, however see the variation of his vocals in "Lowrider" (no doubt a favourite of the band's) to Senorita, and you'll know how broad his talent truly is.
As a whole, I've never seen a band work so well together, yet maintain their own unique styles of playing/singing. If you're a fan of Lounge, Groove and even Funk music, check out Lowrider... and even if you're not, check them out anyway: you may be pleasantly surprised.
Check out their website at http://www.lowridermusic.net for gig times and places. Have a listen to their 30 second samples of a few of their remakes in the "Download" section and see what you think. If anything, the samples don't do them justice, as they sound even better live. Particularly when they let loose and crank out the solos and their own personal touches to the songs.
Seriously, if these guys sound good to you at all, go see them live. They only get better, and you won't be disappointed. Support true local talent, so we can all hear bigger and better things from them. As for me, I eagerly await their new album (with all new originals from the band) in 2005.

The quest for family union...
|
I've been spending quite some time trying to find some distant relatives of mine... Rebecca Rau, and Carly Rau, both from Victoria. Rebecca and Carly, you wouldn't know/remember me, although we may have met in a wedding in Sheppardton for Anita Rau years ago... perhaps?
I don't know, the idea of having relatives (particularly ones around my own age) to catch up with just seems so fascinating! Essentially, the only relatives I knew no longer keep in contact, so all I know know is my direct family and my grandma. If you read this, and would like to catch up, email me at adam14@talk21.com, or alternatively give me a ring or sms me on 0403520384. It'd be great to get to know you! =)
Anyhow... that's my last resort. I'm going to bed... I'm exhausted.

Did someone say "Freedom of Speech"?
|
In Australian society, the concept of "Freedom of Speech" is essentially taken for granted. While it may not necessarily be a part of our constitution as such (if my years of Legal Studies serve me correctly), Australians still have the right to make their voices heard. However, at times, freedom of speech can, and *has* been threatened; and recently I, myself, had this right thrown into jeopardy.
Thus, sit around all, for I shall tell you another story... a tale of man against beast; or more accurately, an individual against absolute CORRUPTION.
For those unaware, a former school of mine has (as of late) been considering legal action against me for my site, http://www.misterslick.tk
A simple disclaimer has been devised in accordance with Australian Privacy Laws, and all is well. Unfortunately for them, I'm not one to back down on my words, and I was more than happy to fight for what I truly believe in. *raises fist* FIGHT THE POWER! XD
Thank god a backstabbing bastard I knew from Ignatius couldn't keep his mouth shut, and told good friends of mine, whom alerted me well in advance. Obviously the school's gotten on edge when they saw my hit counter. =p
And now, in celebration of my blatant victory over a shoddy organisation, I think I shall advertise my site EVERYWHERE.
Congratulations must be in place though, really, to Rostrevor. You try and shut the mouth of your former students in regards to your school's value, and instead you succeeded in nought but inspiring an air of confidence within one of them, whom intends to make it perfectly clear to all, what is so blatantly clear to those who suffer as a result of your organisation every weekday.

On a completely unrelated note...
- Rest in Peace, Mr. Kelly. We don't know why exactly, and we probably won't ever know. You believed you had your reasons, and I have to say I'm shocked that it happened, but I only hope you're in a better place. Your death is simply another painful reminder of a long accepted theory:
"The good die young."
Your happy-go-lucky nature brightened the lives' of the people around you... and you deeply touched the hearts' of many. Rest peacefully, knowing you will be greatly missed.
