MiniSprints

South Island MiniSprint Drivers Club

History of MiniSpints

MiniSprint racing started in the Ellesmere-Leeston area of the South Island of New Zealand in the 1960's.originally called minirods these cars evolved in the 1980's into the purpose built race cars that we have now.Initially run as a national SNZ class in the mid 1990's with motorcycle engined cars also in this class, competiter numbers increased in MiniSprints to the point they became a seperate class in their own right. In fact the motercycle engine class known as Modified sprints is now only a regional class.Past South Island National title holders have included Reon Taylor,Steven Crowe and Brian Morris, with many South Islanders finishing in the top 3

Next Meeting

The next Meeting is scheduled to be held on the 24th of June starting a little earlier than normal at 11am at The Ellesmere Speedway. We would like to run the KEN LOWE MEMORIAL TROPHY so we would like all the minisprints that are running to be there. THANKS

Welcome to the South Island Minisprint club news update

Its been a while since this site has been updated and we apolozise. We have undergone some changes and have only now got ourselves organised. Yes we have just completed our first season running against the Modifed Sprints with varying degrees of success. It is going to very tuff to win races but is going to improve our top drivers which in the long run will help them to there goal. (1NZ, 2NZ, 3NZ)

The Nationals in Rotoura were held January 1st and 2nd originally where sadly only two of our local boys attended, due to a rain out they were both sent home, both had qualified, Blair Lowe the easy way, Jason Stark  after a run off and the repprecharge. Both unsure if there budgets could get them back for the finals but with the help of the drivers club and some luck they both made it back. Blair drove well but had a miss problem all day but still finished a very creditable sixth, Jason drove well at times and was satsifed with his result but will be back to do better next time.

Now as for the next season, we're pleased to anouce some new young enthusiastic faces to the minisprint racks which hopefully will be the start of the trend which is sweeping through the North Island where the numbers of Minisprints is growing like mushrooms. We are currently working on a Club owned car to maybe help those other unsure potential drivers who are sitting on the fence.
