Mills Best Buddies

Mills High School has been participating in the Best Buddies program since 1999. Mills graduate Paul Shirk revolutionized Mills High School with the first Best Buddies charter. No such program had yet been established to reach out to students with intellectual disabilities within the school. The Special Education program at Mills is one of the most widely acclaimed programs in San Mateo County. Through Best Buddies at Mills we have brought students together with other peer buddies enhancing the lives of every individual in the Mills community.

Mission of Best Buddies

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment.

Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,000 middle school, high school, and college campuses across the country and internationally. Best Buddies programs engage participants in each of the 50 United States. We have accredited international programs on six continents with additional country programs under active development.

Best Buddies Facts

-Buddy: a Best Buddies member who is enrolled in special education classes
-Peer Buddy: a Best Buddies member who is enrolled in general education classes
-Common Misconception: Best Buddies is not meant to patronize people in special education classes; Best Buddies is meant to give students in special education classes an opportunity to build friendships with people they may not have a chance to socialize with in their daily lives.
