It is exhibition Year and most of the New News Items will involve progress leading up to the September Show.

Therefore as a temporary measure I have moved club details to a new 'Club History' page which will be updated later this week.

Mr Vic Simpson

On February 26th 2008, our club lost a much loved member and great friend, Victor Grant Simpson.  Vic, to his family and friends, was a life long railway man and loved the job, so much so that his working life extended into his hobby time.  He could scratchbuild quality O Gauge locomotives from brass, plastic and many other materials.

Vic started life in the drawing office at Barrow shipyard but hated it so much that he soon left and joined his beloved railway.  He worked his way up from fire lighter, to fireman, driver and eventually finished his time on the railway as a station manager at St. Albans and St. Pancras stations.  In between time he also managed a career in the air industry and once flew with the Red Arrows!

Some of us only knew Vic later in life but it was a privilege to meet the man and discuss all matters relating to railways with someone who actually knew the real thing!  Vic had many friends in railway industry, both model and real.  I remember taking him to the N Gauge Society AGM at Redhill last year where he promptly sat down in the hotel bar and chatted amiably with Denis Lovett of Bachmann.  They knew each other from working at Euston.  Vic was like that, he wasn't a 'name dropper' but he knew many people from his vast experience of life.

It has been a very sad time for members of the club but we must remember that it is always harder for the close family relations.  Therefore the club extends sincere sympathy to Margaret, his widow and children, David & Anne and thier families.

Peter Chesher,  Chairman - Millom Railway & Scale Modellers

Footnote - The Vic Simpson Memorial Shield 2008

In memory of Victor, this year we shall be awarding the "Vic Simpson Memorial Shield" for the layout voted for by the public as the Best in Exhibition at our September Model Railway Exhibition.  If you are visiting the show please ensure that you vote for your favourite layout.  The winner shall be announced on Sunday afternoon when the final voting slips have been counted.  Vic won the inaugural shield back in 2006 with his O Gauge layout, Woodside, so it is a very fitting tribute that this shield is named after its first winner!

The NEW look Millom Model Railway Exhibition 2008

sponsored by

  &

Please Note that we are holding our usual bi-annual model railway exhibition on September 6th & 7th at the brand new Millom Network Centre!

The great news is that NORTHERN RAIL have confirmed that they are to be our main sponsors for the 2008 show, meaning that we can bring new layouts to the Millom Model Railway Exhibition!

We have today recieved confirmation that UKAEA Windscale Division are to support the Millom Show.  This is fantastic news and without the support of these sponsors this type of show could not go ahead at Millom.  We will endeavour to bring layouts to this show that are worthy of our sponsors support.

New Dates!! - New Venue !! - New Layouts !!

Success at The N Gauge Society AGM

More modelling success at the NGS AGM as our Chairman wins the Group F Building Cup in the Annual Model Making Competition 2008.

Chesh's model of the GWR Station at West Bay, Bridport in Dorset took the first prize and the Building Cup now resides in our part of glorious Cumbria!  An article will hopefully follow later in the N Gauge Society journal and Railway Modeller have expressed an interest in publishing this article.  The station was awarded a Bronze award at the 2008 N Gauge Society Annual Model Making Competition and took approximately six weeks to complete.

This follows on from the success that he and Maurice Chapelhow had in 2007.  Thanks go to Maurice for his ideas for the roof ridge tiles and my Senior Technical Advisor, John Bennett!  Further photographs of West Bay are included on our 'Members Models' pages.  It is likely that this model will feature in Railway Modeller in the near future.

Next year the NGS AGM is in Grimsby and we intend to enter models in the locomotive sections.  These have been fantastic results for a small club such as Millom Railway & Scale Modellers.

Maurice and Chesh will display their entries from both the 2007 & 2008 N Gauge Society competitions along with the Certificates & Building Cup at our Model Railway Exhibition on September 6th & 7th.  These will be shown on the NGS North Mini Stand in the Network Centre Foyer.
