Sailors were always promised a life
of adventure if they joined the United States Navy.
Far-off lands, monumental sea battles, fresh-air and
sunshine were some of the ideas that stirred the
imagination of youths about to embark upon a career in
the Navy. Stories would be traded telling of glory
and duty. Rogues and cut-throats populated the
legends of the early U.S. Navy but never could a hero
of the American Revolution, like John Paul Jones, have
imagined a 20th century naval conflict of such
magnitude like the Battle of Midway which would end up
changing the course of the war in the Pacific during
World War II.
