World War I ushered in the age of
modern warfare by bringing mechanized vehicles such as tanks
and airplanes to the battlefields. Planes had only
been around a handful of years, at that time, and the
men who flew them had to be adventurous and brave. The roots of
the current day United States Air
Force can be traced back to the skies over Europe and
those daring pilots who fought against Kaiser Wilhelm's
forces and the infamous "Red Baron". These first "aces" set the standard for
the proud air tradition that continues today. Here are
several links that will be of interest to veteran pilots and
history buffs.
