Regular readers of this site will have long since realised I wasn't going to this non-event tonight. But in doing the match review, I've adopted the stance of many of the Hearts players. I simply could not be arsed - so below is the report copied and pasted from the BBC Scotland website. I particularly liked the Hearts looked lethargic for long spells statement - like from January to May...
Gavin Skelton's injury-time goal gave Gretna victory over 10-man Hearts in their final SPL game this season.
Hearts striker Gary Glen was sent off in the 25th minute after kicking out at Gretna's Craig Barr.
Both sides struggled for fluency on the poor Fir Park surface and Hearts looked lethargic for long spells.
Rostyn Griffths thought he had given Gretna the lead just before half-time when he converted McGill's cross, but it was chalked off for offside.
Gretna, who were playing their last SPL game with their long-term future in doubt, started the brighter of the two sides.
Nicky Deverdics went close for the hosts early in the game when he volleyed wide on the turn.
Hearts rarely threatened in the opening period, with Jamie Mole's low cross evading Deividas Cesnauskis when they did carve a decent move down the left.
Deverdics spurned a chance in the 15th minute when he sliced wide after Hearts defender Christos Karipidis missed a low cross by Rhys Meynell.
Glen lost his head in the 25th minute when he lashed out at Barr and received his marching orders from referee John Underhill.
Gretna continued to push forward and were unlucky when Danny Hall's drive from the edge of the box was blocked by team-mate Craig Barr following a corner.
Griffiths put the ball in the net following a McGill cross but Gretna's celebrations were shortlived as the effort was ruled out for offside.
Hearts pressed in the second-half and Krysiak saved brilliantly to deny Ivaskevicius.
The game looked destined to end goalless until Skelton flashed the ball past the helpless Steve Banks from 15 yards to secure an unlikely victory for the SPL basement side.
Hearts: Banks, Thomson, Karipidis, Zaliukas, Wallace, Screpis, Kingston, Stewart, Cesnauskis, Mole, Glen. Subs: Ridgers, Ivaskevicius, Goncalves, McGowan, Rapnik, Palazuelos, Husband.
Sending off: Glen 25.

SPL, Saturday 10 May 2008 - Tynecastle
Billed as: Hearts final home game of a truly awful season.
Reality: I gave Hearts two previous home games a miss but chose to go to this one. Says it all about my luck really.
The good: Di Giacomo's goal to seal the game for Killie meant I - along with thousands of others - could leave early before getting caught in the thunder storms that peppered the afternoon.
The bad: The battery on my laptop has only an hour left so I'm unable to go into the gory details...
They said it: "It's probably as bad as I've felt. We lose our opening game of the season against Hibs at home and we've now lost our final league game at home against Kilmarnock." The ever perceptive Stephen Frail.
Reaction: Barely more than ten thousand fans bothered to turn up to Tynecastle today. And they saw yet another embarrassing performance in what has been an embarrassing season. Now it seems Hearts can't even finish top of the bottom six. George Burley was in the stand today. I wonder what his thoughts were...
Hearts: Banks, Thomson, Karipidis, Zaliukas, Wallace, Screpis, Stewart (Mole 64), Jonsson (Ivaskevicius 57), Cesnauskis, Kingston, Glen.

SPL, Monday 5 May 2008 - The Falkirk Stadium
Billed as: For some reason one of the holiday weekend's top games - at least by Setanta Television who, for reasons known only to them, chose to screen it live.
Reality: I had as much fun cutting the grass at Chez Smith an hour before kick-off...
The good: The mute button on the remote control. Scott Booth knows as much about football as my nine month old grand-daughter Hannah.
The bad: Two-thirds of the away end at the ground was empty tonight. For Hearts fans, the season ended weeks ago.
Reaction: Bad enough that Hearts can't make the top six. Now we can't even beat the likes of Falkirk.
They said it: "From splitting the Old Firm two years ago to failing to make the top six this season, it's been a long way down for Hearts" Setanta's Rob McLean. And I have a feeling it ain't over yet, Robert.
Hearts: Banks, Thomson, Goncalves, Berra, Karipidis, Kingston, Jonsson, Mikoliunas (Wallace 39), Elliot (Cesnauskis 67), Palazuelos, Glen (Mole 34).

SPL, Saturday 26 April 2008 - Tynecastle
Billed as: Another bottom six game...
Reality: Another bottom six game...
The good: Two wins in a row for Hearts although as the season trundles to an end in the bottom six of the SPL that's not saying much.
The bad: Frustratingly, Hearts are now just five points off third placed Motherwell - but as we're stuck among the deadwood in the bottom six this is irrelevant.
Reaction: Well, it's a win. And good for Gary Glen, the eighteen year old scoring for the second time in two games. And sixteen year old Scott Robinson came on for a few seconds at the end.
They said it: "They're big lads, they compete well and they protect that goalkeeper of theirs." Caley Thistle manager Craig Brewster on Karapidis and Berra. But I'm not sure if Stevie Banks has upset Brewster recently...
Hearts: Banks, Thomson, Karipidis, Berra, Goncalves, Mikoliunas, Jonsson, Palazuelos, Cesnauskis (Wallace 52), Elliot (Zaliukas 76), Glen (Robinson 90).

SPL, Saturday 19 April 2008 - Tynecastle
Billed as: A bottom six fixture
Reality: A bottom six fixture
The good: Eighteen year old Gary Glen scored his first goal for the first team
The bad: Scraping a narrow win over St. Mirren - really gives us hope for next season...
Reaction: Apathy reigns...rather like many of the players, I couldn't be bothered turning up...
They said it: "We've been excited about Gary Glen for a long time. Manchester United wanted him, and he's a player who'll hopefully become a hero for Hearts fans." Stephen Frail. Sir Alex Ferguson must have been gutted he had to go for Ronaldo instead...
Hearts: Banks, Thomson, Berra, Karipidis, Goncalves (Wallace 79), Palazuelos, Jonsson, Kingston, Mikoliunas, Nade (Makela 61), Glen (Stewart 88).

SPL, Saturday 5 April 2008 - Rugby Park
Billed as: Hearts needing a win to be in with a chance of making the top six of the SPL - and hoping that Falkirk don't win at Aberdeen on Monday.
Reality: Another pitiful performance in a pitiful season. Hearts never looked like getting the win they needed and, if truth be told, they don't deserve another game against the Old Firm, Hibs etc. In fact, in a game Hearts had to win they were lucky to escape Ayrshire with what turned out to be a pointless point.
The good: No more tankings from the Old Firm this season - and we're spared the visit to the cultural metropolis that is Easter Road...
The bad: Three years ago, Vladimir Romanov declared he wanted Hearts to win the Champions League within five years. Now we can't even make the top six...
Reaction: Welcome to the close season. When does Euro 2008 start?
They said it: "If they had scored a late winner it would have been an injustice," Killie boss Jim Jefferies. What he makes of his former team, God only knows.
Hearts: Basso, Neilson, Goncalves, Palazuelos, Berra, Tall, Mikoliunas, Kingston (Stewart 65), Ivaskevicius (Glen 58), Screpis (Elliot 86), Nade. Subs Not Used: Banks, Wallace, Husband, McGowan.

SPL, Saturday 29 March 2008 -Tynecastle
Billed as: Last chance saloon for Hearts if they want to make the top six split in the SPL - against a Dundee United team who put the JTs to the sword last time out at Tannadice.
Reality: An improved performance from Hearts compared to last week - although that was hardly difficult to beat - and three points which, added to Falkirk's inability to defeat Kilmarnock at home, still leaves the top six door slightly ajar.
The good: Despite the tricky conditions, Hearts managed to play with a bit more pace and urgency than last week.
The bad: Vladimir Romanov's return to Tynecastle co-incided with the hapless Jose Goncalve's return to the team at left back. Well, I say co-incidence....no longer picking the team, eh Vlad?
They said it: "We passed the ball well, we defended well. It's maybe a measure of how far the team has come that we expect to win here." Former Hearts manager and now boss at Tannadice, Craig Levein. Your team didn't defend well when Larry scored, Craigy.
Reaction: Last week, Hearts were a shambles. This week, a team that at least looked like they cared turned up and the chance of a top six finish remains. Although this will require victory at Kilmarnock next week to have any chance.
Hearts: Basso, Neilson, Berra, Zaliukas, Goncalves, Mikoliunas (Wallace 78), Jonsson, Stewart, Kingston (Ivaskevicius 67), Palazuelos, Nade.

SPL, Saturday 22 March 2008 - Tynecastle
Billed as: A 'must win' match for Hearts who are running out of games if they wish to maintain their record of always making the top six of the SPL since the league split was introduced a few years ago
Reality: A tedious, boring, inept non-event. And, rather like the Hearts players, I really can't be bothered to say much more.
The good: The predicted snow didn't materialise. But it was good to see Larry Kingston back again.
The bad: Don't get me started...
They said it: "This is a huge game for Hearts - lets hear you make some noise!" Tynecastle Stadium announcer, the legendary Scott Wilson, tries his best to wind up an apathetic home support. A pity you couldn't work on the players, Scott.
Reaction: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Berra, Zaliukas, Wallace, Mikoliunas, Stewart, Palazuelos, Cesnauskis (Ksanavicius 15), Kingston (Screpis 90), Elliot (Mole 68).

SPL, Saturday 15 March 2008 - Love Street
Billed as: A chance for Hearts to break into the top six and follow up their excellent win at Inverness a fortnight ago.
Reality: An injury hit Hearts team struggling to earn a point with a late equaliser from Saulius Mikoliunas. The enforced absence of Christian Nade added to the still absent Larry Kingston and Michael Stewart on the bench meant Hearts were always up against it and they struggled to contain The Buddies.
The good: The fact Hearts kept going to the end was good news - it's not often Hearts have taken anything after falling behind this season.
The bad: Calum Elliot and Jamie Mole were Hearts front two. No offence but at the start of the season we had the choice of Roman Bednar, Andrius Velicka, Christian Nade and Michal Pospisil.
Reaction: A point is a point I suppose but although Hearts still have a chance of top six finish, it's still looking unlikely. Roll on the end of the season...
They said it: "Our aim is to end the season in the top six and with our result going against us today, Europe might be out of reach now." Stevie Frail emerges as front runner for the Stating the Bleedin' Obvious Award...
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Berra, Palazuelos, Wallace, Mikoliunas, Jonsson (Stewart 58), Karipidis, Driver (Cesnauskis 39), Elliot, Mole (Beniusis 67). Subs Not Used: Basso, Zaliukas, Ksanavicius, Thomson.

SPL, Saturday 1 March 2008 - Caledonian Stadium
Billed as: Hearts looking to try and put the nightmare of last Wednesday behind them - against a team they usually struggle against and a venue they seldom win at...
Reality: Arguably Hearts best performance of the season. Stevie Frail promised changes after the Rangers debacle but made only one - Jose Goncalves being dropped after an altercation with Frail. But the players who flopped on Wednesday made up for it today with a fine display with two goals from the much-maligned Calum Elliot.
The good: It says a lot for Elliot that, despite much criticism from the Hearts support, he played through the pain barrier - he was carrying a rib injury - and played his best game for some time. This should do his confidence the world of good - but then again this is Hearts...
The bad: After Wednesday, I had no hesitation in putting Caley Thistle down for a home win on my fixed odds coupon...
They said it: "Calum Elliot has come in for a lot of criticism but he's chipped in with two goals and the second finish was real class" - a delighted Stevie Frail.
Reaction: What the hell do we do with this team of ours? Predicting a Hearts performance this season is a bit like winning the lottery. It was an excellent performance and result - but this makes last Wednesday's display even harder to accept.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Karipidis, Berra, Wallace, Mikoliunas (Screpis 72), Jonsson, Palazuelos, Driver (Ivaskevicius 64), Nade (Beniusis 84), Elliot. Subs Not Used: Ridgers, Zaliukas, Tall, Glen.

In reviewing this game, I thought I would match the collective effort of the Hearts team tonight i.e. I really can't be bothered other than to say it was embarrasing. Along with hundreds of other Jambos, I left when the fourth Rangers goal went in - there were twenty minutes remaining.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Karipidis, Berra, Goncalves (Ksanavicius 54), Cesnauskis (Mikoliunas 46), Jonsson (Zaliukas 64), Palazuelos, Wallace, Nade, Elliot. Subs Not Used: Basso, Ivaskevicius, Tall, Mole.

SPL, Saturday 23 February 2008 - Fir Park
Billed as: A tall order for Hearts against the best team in the country outside the Old Firm and who recently knocked Hearts out of the Scottish Cup at the same venue
Reality: Any chance of a decent game was ruined by a strong Lanarkshire wind which made the game a lottery - but still resulted in a welcome three points for the Jambos.
The good: For once, Hearts defence held firm against the Motherwell onslaught.
The bad: Again, the lack of goals is a worry. When I heard that Nade and Elliot were up front I just couldn't see Hearts scoring. I was right - it took an own goal from Craigan to give us the win.
They said it: "On balance, Hearts deserved to win the game" A refreshingly honest Motherwell manager Mark McGhee. Will he be saying this on a regular basis next season?
Reaction: An excellent three points for Hearts - their second win at Fir Park this season. As things stand Hearts are now just three points off the top six - twelve points out of the last fifteen has seen to that.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Berra, Goncalves, Wallace, Cesnauskis (Mikoliunas 73), Jonsson, Palazuelos, Karipidis, Nade (Beniusis 83), Elliot (Zaliukas 89).

SPL, Saturday 16 February 2008 - Celtic Park
Billed as: Hearts facing a huge task against the champions although three wins and three clean sheets in a row in the SPL had Stevie Frail making optimistic noises.
Reality: A master class in the art of finishing. Hearts played well in patches but patches isn't good enough against the best team in the country.
The good: Ruben Palazuelos - according to Stevie Frail - played well again.
The bad: Still obvious defensive problems for Hearts. The midfield looks in good shape but at the back and up front there is major surgery required.
Reaction: I didn't go to Celtic Park as I've seen the same old story year after year. And given who the referee was, it just wasn't worth the effort and the considerable sum of money required to head to Weegieland. Hearts getting points from the east end of Glasgow is a rare event and it was never realistically going to happen today.
They said it: 'Hinkel chased after Driver as if he were towing a caravan' - the typically inane ramblings of BBC Scotland's resident and unintentional comedian Chick Young
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Berra, Goncalves, Karipidis, Cesnauskis (Mikoliunas 68), Palazuelos, Jonsson, Driver, Velicka, Ksanavicius (Nade 72). Subs Not Used: Basso, Wallace, Zaliukas, McCann, Elliot.

SPL, Saturday 9 February 2008 - Tynecastle
Billed as: Hearts chance to record their first ever win over Gretna over ninety minutes and to banish thoughts of relegation.
Reality: An assured if not quite inspiring performance from the boys in maroon with an early goal settling the nerves and the rare cushion of a two goal lead making things less edgy than of late.
The good: Hearts looked rampant early on with Velicka scoring within two minutes and should have increased their lead soon after.
The bad: The defence still looks decidedly unsteady - Jose Goncalves sometimes gives the impression of being a rabbit caught in the glare of headlights.
Reaction: Three points is what mattered here and Hearts were well worth their win which should finally put to bed any thoughts of demotion. I think Gretna know themselves they're heading back to where they were last season and, being truthful, that's what they are - a First Division team. The second half died a little but at least it's another win.
They said it: "That's three wins in a row in the league and three clean sheets. We need to keep this little run going" - Stevie Frail - before he looked at who we're playing next week...
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Karipidis, Berra, Goncalves, Cesnauskis (Mikoliunas 70), Stewart (McCann 84), Palazuelos, Driver, Velicka, Ksanavicius (Elliot 77). Subs Not Used: Basso, Wallace, Zaliukas, Beniusis.

CIS Insurance Cup Semi-Final- Wednesday 30 January 2008 - Hampden Park
Billed as: Hearts last chance to salvage something from a dreadful season against a Rangers side without a trophy in two years.
Reality: A controversial refereeing decision - against Hearts - and it's the same old story for Hearts against the Old Firm at Hampden. Nade was denied a penalty in the first half but the outrageous decision of the game was Barry Ferguson's blatant handling of the ball before scoring Rangers first goal. Was it hand ball? Well, the fact that Ferguson's been called into the Scotland rugby squad for the game against France on Sunday is a bit of a clue...
The good: Christian Nade looked the part tonight - clearly trying to prove something to Aberdeen boss Jimmy 'It's never my fault' Calderwood.
The bad: Mike McCurry. Those who watched the game tonight know what I mean.
Reaction: We all knew the script - indeed many Hearts fans predicted what would happen tonight. It's happened so many times before. Hearts played reasonably well before the first goal was conceded - then the heads went down as in so many occasions this season.
They said it: "Our apologies for the moronic Jambo element tonight" BBC Scotland's harassed Dougie Donnelly as some Hearts fans made a nuisance of themselves during half-time at Hampden.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Karipidis, Berra, Goncalves (Wallace 83), Jonsson, Stewart, Palazuelos, Mikoliunas (Driver 58), Nade (Beniusis 72), Ksanavicius.

SPL, Saturday 26 January 2008 - Pittodrie
Billed as: A last chance for Hearts to maintain their record of being the only side outside the Old Firm to finish in the top six of the SPL every season since the split was introduced in 2001.
Reality: A decent result and a half decent display from Hearts who comfortably absorbed everything Aberdeen could throw at them. Hearts could and should have won by more had Velicka and Nade taken their chances.
The good: A Hearts team that played for ninety minutes rather than the usual forty-five. Mikoliunas, in particular, worked his backside off. Not every game you can say that.
The bad: At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, the standard of refereeing is now at deplorable levels. For the second week in a row, a Lithuanian player is felled in the penalty box and instead of getting a penalty is booked for diving. Last week it was Velicka, this week Mikoliunas. Two very bad decisions - surely Hearts have to protest to the SFA? Okay, I agree - what's the point?
They said it: "We were disappointing midweek in the Scottish Cup against Motherwell, so it's a marvellous three points for us." - Stevie Frail
Reaction: A good win for Hearts to follow up the Edinburgh derby success last week. The dreaded 'R' word is still a possibility but results like this will banish these thoughts before long.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Berra, Karipidis, Goncalves, Jonsson, Palazuelos, Stewart, Mikoliunas (McCann 85), Nade (Ksanavicius 67), Velicka (Beniusis 75). Subs Not Used: Basso, Wallace, Ivaskevicius, Thomson.

Scottish Cup Fourth Round Replay, Tuesday 22 January 2008 - Fir Park
Billed as: A second attempt for Hearts to reach the next round of the cup after throwing away a two goal lead in the first emotionally charged game at Tynecastle.
Reality: Not for the first time, two Hearts teams turn up against Motherwell. First half was woeful, second half better but by that time the damage had been done and Motherwell deservedly held on to their first half lead gained by a Ross McCormack penalty.
The good: Not any positives that I can see from an early exit from a competition Hearts have won twice in the last decade - but not this year.
The bad: Why the hell can't Hearts play for ninety minutes? One of many questions that need answering.
Reaction: More huge disappointment for a big travelling support who, frankly, deserve much better.
They said it: "It's a massive loss for us but I still believe we can go to Hampden next week and reach the League Cup final." Stevie Frail proving that two positives can make a negative - aye, right.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Berra, Karipidis, Goncalves, Mikoliunas, Jonsson, Stewart, Cesnauskis (Nade 45), Velicka, Palazuelos.

SPL, Saturday 19 January 2008 - Tynecastle
Billed as: The veritable six pointer with both Hearts and Hibs struggling of late and both desperate for points.
Reality: One of the poorest Edinburgh derbies I can recall. Misplaced passes aplenty, missed tackles, clumsy challenges - and a referee who was totally inept. But, at the end of it all, a Hearts victory. The first for more than two months.
The good: The tireless display form Ruben Palazuelos was a shining light on a drab afternoon.
The bad: Referee Kenny Clark. The booking of Velicka for diving when the striker was clearly fouled in the penalty box and should have been awarded a penalty kick was nothing short of scandalous.
They said it: "It isn't big Yves who is to blame here. There are plenty of other players." Hibs new boss Mixu Paatelainen appears to have been doing something else when Hearts scored the only goal of the game.
Reaction: At last, a win for Hearts and a desperately needed one particularly as Gretna and St. Mirren also won. A poor game but it's results that are important now.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Karipidis, Berra, Goncalves, Jonsson, Stewart (Wallace 65), Palazuelos (Nade 81), Driver, Velicka, Cesnauskis (Mikoliunas 70). Subs Not Used: Bjornsson, Thomson, Beniusis, Ksanavicius.

Scottish Cup Fourth Round, Saturday 12 January 2008 - Tynecastle
Billed as: Hearts opening tie in this year's Scottish Cup against a Motherwell team playing their first game since the death of their captain, Phil O'Donnell
Reality: As in the last time 'Well played in Gorgie, Hearts produced a 'two-faced' display. Playing half decent football for an hour and securing a two goal lead, Hearts switch off and let Mark McGhee's impresssive side storm back - and they could even have won it at the death had it not been for Jose Goncalves saving tackle on Porter.
The good: Devidas Cesnauskis is akin to a new signing for Hearts - once he gets fully fit he'll pose a huge threat to the opposition.
The bad: Yet again, Hearts are unable to react to losing a goal. Few of us thought at 2-0 that it was game over - but most of us never doubted that at 2-1 Motherwell would equalise.
They said it: "Given the events of the last fortnight, all I asked for was that we got a cracking cup-tie. And that was what we got" - Motherwell manager, Mark McGhee. There's a vacancy at Tynecastle, Mark, if you fancy it...
Reaction: So the long wait for a Hearts victory goes on. Not since Remberance Sunday on 11 November have Hearts fans celebrated a win. And with Hibs and the cup replay coming up, it may be a while longer...
Hearts: Kurskis, Neilson, Karipidis, Berra, Goncalves, Cesnauskis (Mikoliunas 74), Stewart, Palazuelos, Driver (Wallace 77), Ksanavicius (Pospisil 87), Velicka. Subs Not Used: Bjornsson, Jonsson.

SPL, Saturday 5 January 2008 - Tynecastle
Billed as: A relegation dog-fight with both sides struggling and both desperate for points - and Hearts looking to end a losing run standing at six games.
Reality: It was a relegation dog-fight made all the harder for Hearts after Calum Elliot foolishly getting himself sent off after just 36 minutes for two yellow cards. After all Stevie Frail's talk about tackling indiscipline, the youngster let his team down badly.
The good: The second half comeback, inspired by fantastic support from the stands. A goal down, Hearts launched themselves back into the game and equalised through Velicka and could well have won it at the end.
The bad: Calum Elliot - time to send him on his way.
They said it: 'Underhill - you're the worst ****ing referee I've seen since.......last week!' An irate Hearts fan in the Wheatfield Stand brightens up the afternoon.
Reaction: Another game without a win but it's the first point gleaned by Hearts since we drew with Celtic at the beginning of December. That they came back to salvage a draw with ten men is commendable and the spirit missing so often this season was there aplenty in the second half. In the end it's a point further away from Gretna. And yes, I know that's a ridiculous statement but these are ridiculous times...

SPL, Wednesday 2 January 2008 - Tannadice
Billed as: Stevie Frail's first match as caretaker manager after Vladimir Romanov's decision to appoint a football manager at Tynecastle - with Frail 'filling in' until a permanent appointment is made.
Reality: The cynics among us say Vlad's latest 'announcement' is a ruse to get rid of Frail - and on the evidence of today's result that may well be before the end of the month. 2008 began the way 2007 ended - with Hearts a shambles. Zaliukas and Wallace were sent off before Michael Stewart fought with a Hearts fan and received a second yellow card. All three are now out of Saturday's relegation battle with Kilmarnock.
The good: According to Radio Scotland, for an hour Hearts played quite well and looked like they would come away with a valuable point when Christophe Berra equalised Barry Robson's opening goal.
The bad: How much more indisciplined can Hearts get? Stevie Frail said after the game the club was 'riddled with indiscipline' - he must sort this out before Hearts season ends with demotion.
They said it: "Michael Stewart knows not to react to flak. The Hearts supporters pay good money to come and watch us so he has to accept criticism that comes his way" - Stevie Frail.
Reaction: Hearts have now lost six league games in a row for the first time since the dark days of the 1970s. Days we appear to be returning to all too rapidly...
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace, Mikoliunas (Pospisil 81), Stewart, Palazuelos, Driver (Cesnauskis 34), Velicka, Elliot (Nade 63). Subs Not Used: Basso, Goncalves, Jonsson, McGowan.

Reality: If it's Saturday it must be a Hearts defeat. Although there was a bit more fight about the team this time compared to the toothless performances of late. Palazuelos gave Hearts a first half lead which they held on to until twelve minutes to go. Then the roof fell in and Falkirk scored twice...
The good: The first half display gave those Hearts fans who made the journey at least some hope.
The bad: Conversely, a second half performance in which Hearts failed to cope with Falkirk substitute, forty year old, cigarette smoking Russell Latapy.
They said it: "When their first goal went in, there is a feeling of 'here we go again'. I think it is a confidence thing, without any question," An increasingly desperate Stevie Frail.
Reaction: An improved performance - first half at least - but the same end result. It's time to face facts - Hearts are battling to save their lives. And the sooner the players realise this, the better.
Hearts: Banks; Neilson, Tall, Berra, Wallace; Ivaskevicius (Mikoliunas 83), Stewart, Zaliukas (Jonsson 83), Palazuelos, Driver; Elliot (Pospisil 79). Subs not used: Basso, Goncalves, Beniusis, McGowan.

SPL, Wednesday 26 December 2007 - Tynecastle (in turmoil)
Billed as: Hearts chance to make amends for Saturday's dreadful display against Caley Thistle and show the world there isn't really a crisis in Gorgie.
Reality: Sadly, there is a real crisis as Hearts topped Saturday's performance with an even more shocking display of ineptitude. The Buddies were worthy winners as confidence seeped from the Hearts players with each passing minute.
The good: The decision I took to leave five minutes before the end - I just managed to catch the number three bus back to Dalkeith, saving myself a tortuous half an hour wait for the next one.
The bad: I feel sorry for those corporate sponsors who have to nominate a man of the match award these days. Hearts are now a team that can't pass, can't tackle, can't create a decent chance - and on the evidence of the last two soul-destroying games, can't play football.
They said it: "We're sh**e and we know we are" Hearts supporters chant in agreement with their Paisley counterparts.
Reaction: Not since the days of Tommy McLean have Hearts looked so poor. Alarmingly, Gretna have now started to find form and are now just ten points behind. This is reality, folks - Hearts, as even Stevie Frail admitted after the game, are now in a relegation battle.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Tall, Berra, Wallace, Jonsson, Ivaskevicius, Palazuelos, Driver, Velicka, Nade. Subs: Basso, Elliot, Pospisil, Mikoliunas, Goncalves, Stewart, Zaliukas.

SPL, Saturday 22 December 2007 - Tynecastle
Billed as: The first of two successive home games for Hearts and a chance to make inroads on the teams above them. Stevie Frail spoke prior to the game about the necessity of getting all six points from today's game and the Boxing Day fixture with St. Mirren.
Reality: Forget top six - Hearts will soon have a relegation battle on their hands if this slump continues. Another shocking display from the home team with the players appearing to have little idea what to do. Eduardis Kurskis was the villain of the piece at Ibrox last week - he was the villain again today as he was sent off for two bookable offences. The Lithuanian keeper looked a bundle of nerves throughout.
The good: Answers on a Christmas Card to Vladimir Romanov, c/o Lithuanian Television Centre, Kaunas.
The bad: How much bandwith have I got? Plenty of effort from those in maroon but not much else. Not one player played well and the confidence of the team is clearly at a low ebb.
They said it: "It's not just the players who played today, it's the whole club. We need to look at this and make sure we arrest this alarming slide." Stevie Frail with a not so hidden message for Vladimir Romanov.
Reaction: Hearts season goes from bad to worse. Fortress Tynecastle has now become a free for all and the slide towards the bottom two of the SPL continues. With Gretna winning at Dundee United, there are just eleven points between the Borders team and Hearts. Shades of 1977 all over again...
Hearts: Kurskis, Neilson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace, Ivaskevicius (Mikoliunas 65), Jonsson, Palazuelos, Driver, Ksanavicius (Elliot 34), Velicka, Elliot (Pospisil 65). Subs Not Used: Basso, Goncalves, Cesnauskis, McGowan.
Sent Off: Kurskis (87).
Booked: Kurskis, Jonsson.

SPL, Saturday 15 December 2007 - Ibrox
Billed as: A revenge mission for the home side following their 4-2 drubbing at Tynecastle earlier this season.
Reality: It was indeed sweet revenge for Rangers but thanks largely to an absolute howler from Hearts keeper Eduard Kurskis who let slip a McCulloch effort through his grasp with minutes to go to seal the win for the home side.
The good: Hearts caused some problems in the second half and could well have notched the winner themselves.
The bad: The goalkeeping situation. Granted, Craig Gordon was a helluva act to follow but first Basso and now Kuskis have made crucial errors against the Old Firm in recent weeks. Stick Stevie Banks back in until we can get a half decent keeper in the January transfer window.
They said it: "We got a bit of luck in terms of a goalkeeping error, but we won't complain after the week we have had." Rangers boss Walter Smith.
Reaction: Another Saturday, another mixed bag from Hearts. A bit of a reversal from last week; this time the first half performance was woeful and the second much better. But, thanks to the goalie's blunder, the result was the same. It's going to take a big effort to make the top six at this rate.
Hearts: Kurskis, Neilson, Zaliukas, Berra, Goncalves, Mikoliunas (Ivaskevicius 46), Palazuelos (Beniusis 88), Jonsson, Driver, Velicka (Nade 60), Elliot.

SPL, Saturday 8 December 2007 - Outer Siberia (or was it Tynecastle?)
Billed as: Hearts chance to make home advantage count and make ground up on Motherwell in the chase for a UEFA Cup place.
Reality: Quite often this season I have wondered which Hearts team will turn up. Well, they both did today - good for the opening half hour and quite woeful for most of the second half. Although one must give credit to Motherwell who played well.
The good: For the first thirty minutes Hearts played some half decent stuff, scored a goal and, despite the incessant rain, all seemed well (if you'll pardon the pun)
The bad: The second half was quite awful. Motherwell seemed first to every fifty-fifty ball (on one laughable occasion three Hearts players let shyness get the better of them leaving a Motherwell player to say 'thanks very much') and some Hearts players who shall remain nameless - okay Andrius Velicka - simply gave up. And the incessant rain turned to snow...
They said it: "That was two Hearts teams - in the first half we looked comfortable and moved it well, but the second half was the team that drew with Gretna." An exasperated Stevie Frail
Reaction: On a day when Hibs and Dundee United lost, Hearts blew the chance of making in-roads to third place in the SPL. Yet again, they served up a performance that wasn't good enough, particularly in the second half. Having said that, I have to say I was impressed by Motherwell who played some delightful football and look strong candidates for a UEFA Cup place next season.
Hearts: Kurskis, Neilson, Zaliukas, Berra, Goncalves, Mikoliunas (Nade 62), Stewart, Jonsson (Ivaskevicius 83), Driver, Ksanavicius, Velicka (Elliot 78). Subs Not Used: Basso, Wallace, Tall, Palazuelos.

SPL - Saturday, 1 December 2007 - Tynecastle
Billed as: Hearts hoping to claw back the substantial points difference between them and the champions as Celtic look to avenge their recent CIS Insurance Cup defeat by the JTs.
Reality: A curious affair - the blood and thunder normally associated with this fixture just wasn't there and the game appeared to be heading for a rare goalless draw between the pair until a late Scott McDonald goal and an even later - last gasp - penalty from substitute Andrius Velicka ensured a 1-1 draw.
The good: Hearts never-say-die spirit which kept the team going right until the end.
The bad: I don't wish to be critical - but I will be. Christian Nade was just awful today.
They said it: "It was a bit of a nothing game and that suited us. Hearts won't believe they have got a draw." Celtic manager Gordon Strachan. But we did, wee man, we did...
Reaction: Hearts have played much better than this and lost so getting a draw when all seemed lost was pleasing. And it was good to silence the wannabe Irishmen in the Roseburn Stand. But Hearts badly missed the presence of Michael Stewart and Eggert Jonsson.
Hearts: Basso, Neilson, Tall, Berra, Goncalves, Zaliukas (Elliot 79), Ksanavicius, Kingston, Palazuelos (Mikoliunas 79), Driver, Nade (Velicka 71). Subs Not Used: Banks, Wallace, McGowan, Ivaskevicius.

SPL, Sunday 25 November 2007 - Fir Park, Motherwell
Billed as: An ideal chance for Hearts to cement their place in the top half of the SPL against the bottom team who have won just one game all season.
Reality: Hearts looked comfortable against a team low on confidence - until a ridiculous decision by referee Mike Tumilty to send off Michael Stewart after just twenty minutes for striking Gretna's Danny Grainger. There was scarcely any contact and even a yellow card would have been harsh. But this referee has a reputation for flashing red cards and until the SFA look at this fella we're stuck with it.
The good: Larry Kingston tried to play football in difficult circumstances but didn't always receive the support he deserved. His sublime finish for Hearts goal was quite superb.
The bad: Can the standard of Scottish refereeing get any lower? I doubt it.
They said it: "I was disappointed with they way we fell asleep when we gifted Gretna their goal" A clearly angry Stevie Frail.
Reaction: You just never know with Hearts these days but the sending off of the hugely influential Stewart changed the face of the game. It's two points dropped against a team everyone else seems to be defeating - Hearts though just can't seem to beat Gretna over ninety minutes.
Hearts: Basso, Neilson, Zaliukas, Berra, Goncalves, Ksanavicius, Kingston, Stewart, Jonsson, Nade, Driver.
Subs: Banks, Wallace, Velicka, Elliot, Ivaskevicius, Palazuelos, McGowan.

SPL, Sunday 11 November 2007 - Tynecastle
Billed as: On a day when Hearts fans worldwide remembered those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, one wondered if the present day Hearts team would remember to turn up.
Reality: Thankfully, Hearts did turn up and produced a performance, particularly in the second half, which destroyed Aberdeen and left their manager, the shy and retiring Jimmy Calderwood, somewhat gobsmacked.
The good: The energy and at times skilful football produced by the home side was good to see - almost reminiscent of the Burley era.
The bad: Defensively, Hearts still look unconvincing although the loss of Robbie Neilson to injury didn't help matters.
Reaction: A fine win that lifts Hearts above The Dons on goal difference. If only Hearts could achieve some consistency. And to those visiting fans who went to so much effort to make their Lithuanian Circus banner - I hope you enjoyed your visit to the big city.
They said it: "In training this week we have practised squeezing high up the park and starting at a high tempo and I think we did that," Hearts skipper Christophe Berra.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson (Zaliukas 39), Tall, Berra, Goncalves, Driver, Jonsson, Stewart, Ksanavicius, Nade (Beniusis 80), Velicka (Kingston 58). Subs Not Used: Basso, Wallace, Palazuelos, Elliot.

SPL, Sunday 4 November 2007 - Easter Road
Billed as: The clash of styles between the Brazilian like, flair inducing, intricit passing Hibernian FC and the lump it up the park, nasty bad Lithuanians of Heart of Midlothian.
Reality: Honours even after one of the best Edinburgh derbies in recent years with both teams going for glory. Hibs dominated the first half, while Hearts dominated the second with a draw probably a fair result.
The good: Hearts opted for a two man attack with Velicka partnering Nade and they were a constant threat.
The bad: Hibs goal came when Hearts poorly defended a corner-kick. Velicka was the man at the near post but he strayed from position meaning Berra's wayward clearance trundled into an empty net.
Reaction: An entertaining game with the result about right. Hearts could well have won it had Driver and Pinilla not wasted good chances but on the other hand Hibs should have had a penalty in the first half when Berra bundled over Stevenson in the penalty box.
They said it: "We dominated the game and we should have been four goals in front. You'd never have believed that was a derby game the way we passed it about." The usual deluded rant from Hibernian manager John Collins. Does he actually watch a game or does he concentrate on the mirror honing his magnificent good looks?
Hearts: Basso, Neilson, Goncalves, Berra, Tall, Driver, Stewart, Jonsson, Ksanavicius (Elliot 86), Nade (Pinilla 66), Velicka (Pospisil 80). Subs Not Used: Banks, Wallace, Mikoliunas, Palazuelos.

CIS Insurance Cup, Wednesday 31 October 2007 - Celtic Park
Billed as: Cup favourites Celtic looking for an easy passage into the semi-finals at the expense of a struggling Hearts side.
Reality: Will the real Hearts side turn up? After a woeful performance at Rugby Park, Hearts defended resolutely and struck effectively on the counter-attack to knock Celtic out of the CIS Insurance Cup. Andrius Velicka struck two fine goals late on to secure victory for the JTS - the second goal was a work of art - as Hearts yet again defied expectations.
The good: Defensively, Hearts were tremendous - unexpected after shipping six goals in two games.
The bad: Recently I've been unable to pick out anything good from Hearts performances. Tonight, I couldn't fault the team.
Reaction: A fantastic result and fine performance by the much-maligned Hearts team. After a shambolic semi-final draw - a Mickey Mouse draw for a Mickey Mouse Cup? - Hearts will face Rangers at Hampden in the semi-final at the end of January.
They said it: "I couldn't see that coming." A shell-shocked Celtic manager Gordon Strachan.
Hearts: Basso, Neilson, Berra, Tall, Goncalves, Palazuelos, Zaliukas (Jonsson 64), Stewart, Driver, Elliot (Velicka 74), Ksanavicius (Mikoliunas 89). Subs Not Used: Kurskis, Wallace. Booked: Ksanavicius.

SPL, Saturday 27 October 2007 - Rugby Park
Billed as: A tricky trip to Ayrshire for Hearts looking to bounce back after last week's home defeat by Dundee United.
Reality: Three goals down, a man sent off and a consolation goal in injury time. Perhaps I should just cut and paste last week's review as Hearts turned in another woeful performance.
The good: Maybe I'll start taking this part out for future reviews...
The bad: Without wishing to exceed the website's bandwith, I could go on at length about another shoddy performance, the lack of fight among the players, a dodgy goalkeeper, Nade's sending off etc. etc. etc.
Reaction: Hearts are back to their bad old ways again. Yet again the team selection was baffling and no one knows what the hell is going on. Worringly - and I put myself in this category - fewer and fewer people seem to care. Celtic await on Wednesday in a competition few give a monkey's about any more - I think I'll paint the bathroom and watch it dry instead of watching this shower...
They said it: "The management team has to organise things so that we go back to basics and become harder to score against," Michael Stewart - Stevie Frail was too disgusted to attend the post match press conference.
Hearts: Basso, Neilson, Goncalves, Tall, Berra, Stewart (Jonsson 82), Makela (Beniusis 52), Driver, Palazuelos, Zaliukas, Nade. Subs Not Used: Kurskis, Velicka, Mikoliunas, McGowan, Pospisil.

SPL, Saturday 20 October 2007 - Tynecastle
Billed as: An opportunity for Hearts avenge their 4-0 drubbing from the last time United visited Tynecastle.
Reality: Well, I have to confess I wasn't at the game today. I was laid low by a sickness bug that has swept through my family all week - and left me until the weekend. But by all accounts Hearts played well for the opening twenty minutes before United scored against the run of play.
The good: The return - albeit as a substitute - of Mauricio Pinilla for his first appearance of the season.
The bad: I understand the performance of referee Craig Thomson was not the best.
They said it: "We didn't do enough in the second half to put them under pressure. We came up against a dogged United side." A despondent Stevie Frail.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Zaliukas, Berra, Goncalves (Ivaskevicius 87), Kingston, Stewart, Jonsson, Driver (Ksanavicius 46), Nade (Pinilla 61), Elliot. Subs Not Used: Kurskis, Tall, Karipidis, Palazuelos.

SPL, Saturday 6 October 2007 - Tynecastle
Billed as: Hearts chance to build on last weekend's fine victory at St. Mirren and to consolidate their place in the top six.
Reality: A fine afternoon's entertainment! Hearts are beginning to play a bit and with Falkirk also playing a fast, open game the near 16,000 got value for money.
The good: Without wishing to sound like a demented Hibby, it does seem that, slowly, Hearts are playing more of a passing game. The opening goal was a testament to that and the players seem more comfortable when the ball is played on the ground. They just need to tell Robbie Neilson that...
The bad: Pedro Moutinho's dive which earned him a booking from referee Stuart Dougal. After the Mikoliunas affair, SFA Chief Executive Gordon Smith said that diving just wasn't part of Scottish football. Will the Falkirk player be condemned as Miko was? Answers on a postcard to Hampden Park...
Reaction: Another good win for Hearts who are now scoring goals aplenty as well as some good football. A thoroughly enjoyable game with Hearts scoring four goals at home for the third game in succession.
They said it: "It's a good victory for us. On the back of an indifferent start, it's good that we are on a wee run. If we play like that, with all the goals, we are a match for anyone." Stevie Frail sounding as if he's starting to believe.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Kancelskis, Berra, Zaliukas, Jonsson, Kingston, Stewart (Palazuelos 75), Driver, Ksanavicius (Elliot 60), Velicka (Nade 64).

SPL, Sunday 30 September 2007 - Love Street
Billed as: Hearts chance to bounce back from last Saturday's last minute defeat at Inverness
Reality: A good win for Hearts against a physical St. Mirren team. Hearts survived a decent penalty claim by the home team in the second half but were well worth their win.
The good: Another influential display by Mikey Stewart - what an inspired signing he has been.
The bad: It's just as well, defensively, it was St. Mirren Hearts were playing. Ibrahim Tall looked all over the place and Jose Goncalves also looked a bit shaky at times.
Reaction: A fine three points for Hearts against a St.Mirren team who have already begun their annual scrap against relegation. Hearts have now moved into the top six - it's progress if nothing else.
They said it: "If I was going to discuss some of the refereeing decisions I'd be here all night" Saints manager Gus Macpherson. Your team got what they deserved, Gus - zilch.
Hearts: Basso, Neilson, Goncalves, Berra, Tall Kingston, Jonsson, Driver, Stewart, Ksanavicius, Nade. Subs: Kurskis, Zaliukas, Elliot, Velicka, Palazuelos, Kancelskis, Ivaskevicius.

CIS Insurance Cup, Tuesday 25 September 2007 - Tynecastle
Billed as: Hearts chance to make up for last Saturday's disappointment at Inverness by progressing to the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
Reality: Hearts huffed and puffed and eventually got there - but before missing a hatful of chances and going to extra-time
The good: The occasional decent passing movement was pleasing on the eye.
The bad: The amount of missed chances was a concern - would have been more than a concern had Dunfermline been awarded a last minute penalty in regulation time.
They said it: 'Elliot will mess this up like he's done all night - oh, great goal Calum!' - fan in the Wheatfield Stand eats his words (he wasn't alone)
Reaction: A good win for Hearts even if they did need extra-time to overcome First Division opponents. Now Celtic at Parkhead await in the quarter-finals.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Berra, Kancelskis, Goncalves, Kingston, Stewart (Palazuelos 29), Ivaskevicius (Ksanavicius 65), Jonsson, Nade (Velicka 77), Elliot. Subs Not Used: Kurskis, Zaliukas.

SPL, Saturday 22 September 2007 - Caledonian Stadium
Billed as: Pointless Caley Thistle up against a buoyant Hearts team who demolished Rangers last weekend
Reality: Back to type for the Jambos with another pitiful performance against the SPL's bottom side.
The good: Hard to think of any plus points from a match which Hearts did very little
The bad: How long has Andrius Velicka got until he heads back to Lithuania?
Reaction: Typical Hearts. From the highs of thrashing Rangers last week to the lows of losing to a team who hadn't won a game until today - you could almost have written the script before a ball was kicked. Next week Hearts are away again to St. Mirren - what will happen there is anyone's guess.
They said it: "Passes went astray and we didn't really have the same level of performance as we had last week against Rangers," Stevie Frail stating the obvious.

SPL, Saturday 15 September 2007 - Tynecastle
Billed as: Unbeaten Rangers looking to extend their run against a struggling Hearts team still to win at Tynecastle this season.
Reality: Hearts best performance of a troubled season and very nearly a throwback to the season before last when the maroons took Scottish football by storm. The commitment, passion and skill so sadly lacking in recent weeks was back as the league leaders were well beaten.
The good: Hearts players seem to be playing for one another again - they played more like a team today rather than individuals
The bad: The performance of referee Mike McCurry and his hapless assistants. The constant showing of dissent by the Rangers players was inexcusable. I'll mention no names - okay, then, Kevin Thomson...
They said it: "We started poorly and I think that set the pattern for the game. At the end of the day we've got no great complaints about the result." Rangers manager Walter Smith - resting players worked a treat then, Wattie...
Reaction: Hearts revival continues with their third win in a row. At least the commitment is back and as long as the players show that and plenty of effort then the fans will back them. There's still a helluva long way to go but the signs are distinctly more promising than they were three weeks ago at Celtic Park.

SPL, Monday 3 September 2007 - Fir Park
Billed as: Troubled Hearts looking for their first league win of the season up against in-form Motherwell, looking to go third in the SPL.
Reality: A decent win and a decent display for Hearts against a very physical Motherwell side. Three welcome points at a difficult venue.
The good: Larry Kingston's class shone through but in defence Ibrahim Tall blocked everything that came his way.
The bad: Another inept display by the referee - this time Charlie Richmond's performance beggared belief.
Reaction: A most welcome three points for Hearts and the first league win of the season. Kingston's fine goal set the maroons up and it was a much more organised performance from the JTs than has been evident thus far this season. Robbie Neilson and Calum Elliot also impressed.
They said it: "Absolutely ridiculous" - Setanta Sports summariser Stuart Lovell on referee Richmond's performance. And for once the ex-Hibby was right.

CIS Insurance Cup 2nd Round - Forthbank
Billed as: The banana skin of the League Cup - struggling Hearts were surely on thin ice against the First Division new boys.
Reality: A comfortable win for Hearts in the end after a tense first half when the trauma of Saturday's thrashing at Celtic Park still seemed evident. But an own goal from Albion's Ellis settled the nerves.
The good: Hearts played with more confidence and effort and did the basic things right.
The bad: The continuing lack of firepower up front.
Reaction: Hearts did what they had to do against potentially tricky opposition. And not every SPL club managed that (eh, St. Mirren?)
They said it: "You could see the confidence growing among the players as the game wore on" Stevie Frail.

SPL, Saturday 25 August 2007 - Celtic Park
Billed as: A daunting trip to the lions den for Hearts to face the best team in Scotland.
Reality: If last week's performance againt Gretna was awful, this abject display in the east end of Glasgow sunk Hearts to new depths. Hearts are in crisis, a team that looks inept and who were embarrassed by a Celtic team who couldn't have imagined it would have been so easy.
The good: For the second week running, there was nothing good on view from a Hearts perspective.
The bad: Take your pick - a woeful defensive display, tactics which beggared belief, a team of sloppy individuals. Hearts are now an embarrassment. As if things weren't bad enough, Neil McCann appears to have suffered another serious injury. Let's hope this one doesn't finish him off.
They said it: "Celtic destroyed us today. But I'm not going to walk away. If the club want to sack me then they'll sack me but I'll be working 24 hours per day to put this right" Stevie Frail, as brutally honest as ever. Don't go Stevie - the fans aren't blaming you for the shambles.
Reaction: Hearts are now in the bottom three of the SPL with just two points from a possible twelve - and just two goals. Far from challenging the Old Firm, Hearts look, even at this early stage, as if they're going to be fighting relegation. And three substitutions at half-time? Vladimir Romanov, it's time to answer your critics.

SPL, Saturday 18 August 2007 - Tynecastle
Billed as: The first ever league meeting between Hearts and Gretna and a chance for the Jambos to atone for a less than auspicious start to the season
Reality: Another truly awful afternoon in Gorgie. The rain teemed down all day and Hearts, still persisting with a 4-5-1 formation, looked totally clueless. The cascade of booing at the end told its own story.
The good: None that I can think of on a thoroughly miserable afternoon.
The bad: Well...one up front at home against Gretna? And Andrius Velicka seemed disinterested. The substitution of two of the better Hearts players at half-time? Eggert Jonsson in particular should have remained on the park. A woeful defensive performance that, had it been any other team than Gretna, would have been severely punished. I could go on...
They said it: "I have not got carte blanche to make substitutions. If managers are in the stand I am sure assistants would be looking for guidance as well. It's just frustrating, the whole day has been really frustrating," You've got to wonder for how much longer Stevie Frail is going to put up with this.
Reaction: Another bad day at Tynecastle. On this evidence, Hearts are going to be slipping towards a relegation fight - even at this early stage in the season. The supporters are, quite rightly, becoming angrier with each passing week.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Berra, Zaliukas, Wallace, Jonsson (Kingston 45), Stewart, Palazuelos (Driver 45), Ksanavicius, Velicka (Makela 67), Ivaskevicius.

SPL, Sunday 12 August 2007 - Pittodrie
Billed as: A chance for the perceived main challengers to the Old Firm to atone for their disappointing first day of the season performances.
Reality: A tight, tense affair - a shame, really, this early in the season - with precious few opportunities for either side.
The good: Hearts seem to be passing the ball more this season with Michael Stewart involved with most of the passing moves.
The bad: Yet again, Hearts opted for a 4-5-1 formation - it's difficult to see free-flowing football with lots of goals with the team set up the way it is.
They said it: "Well, it's a step up from the game last Monday" - Goalkeeper Stevie Banks stating the obvious.
Reaction: A point gleaned from a difficult venue isn't to be sniffed at and Hearts dominated for long spells without seriously troubling the Aberdeen keeper. But Michael Stewart's sublime strike right on half-time was glorious - more of the same please, from all the players.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace, Palazuelos, Jonsson, Stewart, Ivaskevicius (Mikoliunas 74), Velicka (Makela 90), Driver (Ksanavicius 46).
Subs Not Used: Kurskis, Karipidis, Goncalves, Cesnauskis.
Booked: Neilson, Ivaskevicius, Zaliukas, Palazuelos.
Goal: Stewart 45.

Top Man: For the second time in six days - Michael Stewart
SPL, Monday 6 August 2007 - Tynecastle
Billed as: The opening game of the season - and with it being the Edinburgh derby it was switched to that traditional kick-off time of Monday evening at 7.45pm...
Reality: A poor game with little in the way of decent football from either team. Hearts had nine players missing, including the now departed Craig Gordon, but some of those who did wear maroon looked less than fit.
The good: Not a lot went right for Hearts on an awful night but the performance of Michael Stewart against his old club was heartening.
The bad: How long have you got? Few Hearts players played anywhere near the standard required. But the fans booing Lithuanian striker Beniusis was not necessary. Yes, he played poorly but he looked far from fit - and booing his every touch is hardly likely to help his confidence.
They said it: "It could not be a worse night and we need to dust ourselves down and get ourselves ready for Sunday's game against Aberdeen." Stevie Frail looked shell-shocked after the game.
Reaction: A shocking performance from Hearts who were outplayed and outfought by their rivals - unacceptable in any game but sinful in a derby. The team selection was, not for the first time, simply baffling. Andy Driver has scarcely played any pre-season games yet is thrown in at the deep end. An ominous start to what looks likely to be a long, hard season.
Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Zaliukas, Karipidis, Wallace, Mikoliunas (Makela 66), Tall (Jonsson 59), Stewart, Driver, Ksanavicius, Beniusis (Pospisil 70).
Subs Not Used: Bjornsson, Goncalves, Cesnauskis, Palazuelos.
Booked: Stewart, Neilson, Karipidis.
Goal: Kerr 2.

Top Man: Michael Stewart
Pre-Season Friendly, Saturday 28 July 2007 - Murrayfield
Billed as: The glamour game to beat all glamour games as some of the best players in the world pit their skills against the likes of Lee Wallace and Michael Stewart...
Reality: The biggest ever home crowd to watch a Hearts game - nearly 58,000 - and an array of talented superstars on a sunny Edinburgh afternoon couldn't disguise the fact this was little more than a training exercise for the legends of Barcelona. The likes of Ronaldinho, Eto'o and, in the second half, Thierry Henry toyed and tormented a home team that tried but couldn't come anywhere close to the class of their Catalan visitors.
The good: To witness the sublime skills of Ronaldinho, Henry et al was a privilege. Barca's second goal in particular was sublime. This is the standard every football team should aspire to.
The bad: The louts who thought it was clever to wander on to the pitch in the first half. Disturbingly, given recent events in Scotland, the reaction of the stewards and police was akin to a challenge from Gordan Petric - slow and unconvincing.
Reaction: Those who might have believed the hype may have been disappointed but, as pre-season friendlies go, it was not unexpected. But we won't see football as good as that again in Scotland this season - unless Barca are drawn in the Champions League with either of the Old Firm.
They said it: "I think Hearts gave us a good game, particularly in the first half. I think we controlled the game though" The diplomatic views of Barca coach Frank Rijkaard.
Barcelona: Valdes: Zambrotta, Sylvinho, Thuram, Oleguer: Xavi,Toure, Iniesta: Ronaldinho, Ezquerro, Eto'o. Subs: Belletti, Motta, Crosas, Valiente, Maxi Lopez, Delgado, Henry, Olmo, Bojan, Dos Santos, Deco, Abidal, Jorquera, Olazabel.
Hearts: Gordon: Karpidis, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Tall; Makela, Stewart, Kingston, Ksanavicius; Velicka. Subs: Banks, Neilson, McCann, McGowan, Jonsson, Beniusis, Mikoliunas, Ivaskevicius, Palazuelos, Pospisil, Elliot.
Top man: From a Hearts point of view Michael Stewart looked inventive.
