A Fortysomething Hearts Supporter

Kilmarnock 1 Hearts 0

SPL, Sunday 20 May 2007 - Rugby Park

Billed as: A chance for Hearts to clinch third place in the SPL and secure a place in next season's UEFA Cup - if they won and Aberdeen dropped points at home to Rangers.

Reality: Aberdeen's 2-0 victory over Walter Smith's men rendered the match in Ayrshire meaningless - but it was another dire performance from the maroons who seemed to realise the season was over with the news from Aberdeen and stopped playing accordingly. Steven Naismith's penalty winner eight minutes from time seemed inevitable.

The good: Difficult to pick any positives from the game although Christophe Berra's contribution was as sound as always.

The bad: Hmm. The players lack of fight, the anonymous displays of Kingston, Mikoliuanas and Pospisil, a shocking performance from referee Willie Collum (how Sylla remained on the park is anyone's guess) and the mystifying fact there were no Hearts substitutions despite a pitiful display.

They said it: "No" - Craig Gordon's reaction when asked if this was his last appearance for Hearts. Manchester United are apparently lining up an £8m bid.

Reaction: A poor end to what has been a poor season. Congratulations to Aberdeen who thoroughly deserve their place in next season's UEFA Cup. Good luck to them and to Dunfermline Athletic.

Hearts: Gordon, Berra, Goncalves, Zaliukas, Tall, Mikoliunas, Driver, Kingston, Ivaskevicius, Bednar, Pospisil.
Subs Not Used: Banks, Wallace, McCann, Elliot, Neilson, Pilibaitis, Karipidis.

Booked: Ivaskevicius, Berra, Mikoliunas, Gordon.

Hearts 2 Hibernian 0

SPL, Saturday 12 May 2007 - Tynecastle

Billed as: The final Edinburgh derby of the season with Hibs looking for their first league win over Hearts this term and hoping to finally extinguish the Jambos hopes of playing in European competition next season.

Reality: Another derby and a familiar script. After Mickey Pospisil's goal after just 33 seconds, Hibs are afflicted by another goalkeeping calamity when Andrew McNeil misjudges a bouncing ball to allow Andy Driver to take the ball off him and score Hearts second. I nearly had to go and change my trousers...

The good: The football played by Hearts in the first half was pleasing on the eye with good passing movement and, perhaps, the sign of things to come under Stevie Frail's influence.

The bad: The second half was back to the woeful stuff seen throughout this season - consistency, even during games, is a must for next season.

They said it: "Their tails are up, they're confident and we become too edgy. That's the perfect word for us in the first half, edgy." Wee team manager John Collins. The perfect word I would use is garbage...

Reaction: With Aberdeen losing at Celtic, Hearts European dream is not yet dead although they have to win at Kilmarnock next Sunday and hope Rangers don't lose at Pittodrie. Hearts league dominance over Hibs continues - the Lochend Brazil have won just four times in Gorgie in nearly a quarter of a century.

Hearts: Gordon, Karipidis, Zaliukas, Berra, Fyssas (Goncalves 60), Mikoliunas, Kingston (Tall 69), Ivaskevicius, Driver, Pospisil, Bednar (Velicka 46). Subs Not Used: Banks, McCann, Wallace, Kancelsku.

Booked: Karipidis, Berra, Driver.

Goals: Pospisil 1, Driver 23.

Top man: Larry Kingston - the little man simply oozes class.

Hearts 1 Aberdeen 1

SPL, Sunday 6 May 2007 - Tynecastle

Billed as: The battle for third spot and a place in next season's UEFA Cup. With Hearts four points behind The Dons, defeat would end their chances.

Reality: Hearts were back to their worst with a woeful display but, incredibly, it took a last gasp equaliser from Barry Nicholson to rescue a point for Aberdeen.

The good: Christophe Berra kept the defence together and the youngster has had to mature quickly this season following the departure of Andy Webster and Steven Pressley.

The bad: Just what were Hearts tactics exactly? The midfield was by-passed and Larry Kingston looked out of sorts in what appeared to be a midfield holding role - as Julien Brellier sat on the bench.

They said it: "The players are defiant it will go down to the last two games and they're lifting the staff. We must concentrate on the Hibs game on Saturday." - Stevie Frail knows next week really is last chance saloon.

Reaction: Hearts didn't deserve to win a game they really had to win to have any hope of getting third place. Even the Hearts goal, scored by Velicka, came as a result of a mistake by the Aberdeen goalkeeper. In truth, Hearts just aren't good enough and there really needs to be a big clear out of players in the summer. Aberdeen, though, deserve to be in next season's UEFA Cup and the best of luck to them.

Hearts: Gordon, Karipidis, Kancelsku (Tall 46), Berra, Fyssas, Ivaskevicius, Mikoliunas (Brellier 79), Kingston, Driver, Bednar, Velicka (Pospisil 59). Subs Not Used: Banks, Neilson, Wallace, McCann.

Booked: Kancelsku.

Celtic 1 Hearts 3

SPL, Sunday 29 April 2007 - Celtic Park

Billed as: Another chance for Hearts to be 'party-poopers' - copyright all newspapers - as they looked to close the gap on third-placed Aberdeen to four points by spoiling Celtic's championship party.

Reality: After a quiet first half, Hearts played some decent stuff in the second forty-five minutes and scored two cracking goals and a Mickey Pospisil penalty to earn a thoroughly deserved  - and rare - victory in the east end of Glasgow.

The good: The belief emanating from the team once they went ahead was refreshing to see - they looked supremely confident the more the game went on.

The bad: The early exit of Julien Brellier who seemed to take a knock but seemed none too pleased at having to come off in the first half.

They said it: "My dad has been telling me to practice free-kicks, so he will be delighted," Goal hero Andy Driver whose stunning free-kick put Hearts two goals ahead. Listen tae yer faither, Andrew...

Reaction: A totally unexpected three points for Hearts and a performance to match, particularly in the second half. If Hearts can beat Aberdeen next week and then Hibs the following week, they will move into third place by the time Aberdeen head for Celtic Park. Interesting times ahead.

Hearts: Gordon, Karipidis, Berra, Zaliukas, Goncalves (Wallace 46), Mikoliunas (McCann 72), Brellier (Kancelsku 24), Kingston, Ivaskevicius, Pospisil, Driver.
Subs Not Used: Banks, Tall, Elliot, Bednar.

Rangers 2 Hearts 1

SPL, Saturday 21 April 2007 - Ibrox

Billed as: A tough ask for Hearts given that they hadn't scored against Rangers this season and have a pretty poor record at Ibrox in any case.

Reality: Pretty much as expected although Hearts unexpectedly took the lead with a quite superb goal from Velicka after Larry Kingston ran fully forty yards to set him up. Hearts led 1-0 at half-time but, inevitably, Rangers stormed back through Gavin Rae and a late winner from Barry Ferguson.

The good: Hearts team spirit is back and there was some spirited resistance to Rangers in their own back yard.

The bad: The belief that was so much in evidence last season is not quite there this time - the players didn't seem to believe they could win the game. In the end they didn't.

They said it: "You can't say anything about the referee  - despite his decisions you just have to get on with it" - Christophe Berra reflects on his last minute booking from Ian Brines.

Reaction: An inevitable defeat at Ibrox but the day could have been worse had the wee team not snatched a point at Aberdeen. There's now a four point gap between The Dons and Hearts in the race for third place.

Hearts: Gordon, Karipidis, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace, Ivaskevicius (Mikoliunas 82), Kingston, Brellier, Driver, Velicka (Elliot 57), Pospisil (Aguiar 74). Subs Not Used: Kurskis, Tall, McCann, Kancelsku.

Booked: Zaliukas, Ivaskevicius, Pospisil, Kingston, Berra.

Hearts 1 Kilmarnock 0

SPL, Saturday 7 April 2007 - Tynecastle

Billed as: A chance for Hearts to not only banish the memories of their woeful last appearance at Tynecastle but to gain revenge over a Killie side who won 2-0 on their last visit to Gorgie.

Reality: Another poor game, in keeping with much of Hearts season, but three points gleaned which could prove valuable come the end of the season.

The good: The return of Larry Kingston to midfield - the Ghanian has quickly become a cult figure among the Hearts support.

The bad: While I could understand the five in midfield tactics against the Lochend Brazil last week, I couldn't figure it out for a home game against Kilmarnock. Perhaps the reason was that Killie also deployed five men in midfield and this meant the keepers were rarely called into action. And the sending off of Jose Goncalves for his reaction to a horrendous challenge from Gary Wales left a sour taste - particularly as Wales only received a yellow card. It seems it's okay to nearly cause someone a serious injury but unacceptable to react badly to it. Scottsh referees, eh? Dontcha love 'em?

They said it: "We went with just one up because it brought us success last week but it didn't really work this week albeit we got the three points" - the always honest Stevie Frail

Reaction: Another hard afternoon to endure but with Aberdeen and the boys from Brazil losing it was a good afternoon to be a Jambo. Certainly better than in recent weeks!

Hearts: Gordon, Karipidis, Kancelsku, Berra, Goncalves, Ivaskevicius (Pilibaitis 89), Aguiar (Pospisil 74), Kingston, Brellier, Driver, Velicka (McCann 65). Subs Not Used: Banks, Wallace, Tall, Neilson.

Hibernian 0 Hearts 1

SPL, Sunday 1 April 2007 - Easter Road

Billed as: The Brazilian like, flair playing Bareclona-esque Hibs team, having won some minor trophy the other week were expected to wipe the floor with a disillusioned, dispirited Hearts team who still had nightmares about their last outing.

Reality: A backs to the wall, defensive performance from the maroons who snatched a smash and grab victory thanks to Zaliukas late winner.

The good: Football wise, not a lot - but delaying Hibs parading the East of Scotland Shield - sorry, League Cup - rubbed salt into the Hibs wounds.

The bad: Another plethora of Hearts bookings -including the inevitable yellow card for Julien Brellier.

They said it: "I would have been happy with a draw but it's nice to come here and spoil the party" Good lad, Stevie Frail.

Reaction: Just when you expected it least, Hearts produced their first league win at Easter Road in five years. Pretty it wasn't but it keeps alive Hearts faint hopes of a place in next season's UEFA Cup.

Hearts: Gordon, Karipidis, Zaliukas, Berra, Goncalves, Pilibaitis (Jonsson 66), Aguiar, Brellier, Ivaskevicius, Driver (Fyssas 88), Velicka (Pospisil 77).
Subs Not Used: Banks, Armstrong, Mackie, Kelly.

Hearts 0 Dundee Utd 4

SPL, Saturday 17 March 2007 - Tynecastle

Billed as: Hearts chance to claw back some points on third-placed Aberdeen with the Dons heading for Ibrox.

Reality: In a season of shocking displays, this was Hearts worst by some distance. Arguably fortunate to be on level terms at half-time, the second half was one of the worst Hearts displays I can remember at Tynecastle in nearly forty years. But this has been coming for several weeks now - and Assistant Coach Stephen Frail's post match comments about divisions in the dressing room did nothing to quell the growing anger among an increasingly disillusioned Hearts support.

The good: Substitute Gary Glen at least ran his heart out. Something the likes of Michal Pospisil could learn.

The bad: I'll crash the Freewebs website if I list everything.

They said it: "We have a group of players who sit and talk and eat together, but all in their nationalities and it's wrong. We're trying as coaching staff to break that and bridge the gap. We let the fans and ourselves down." The brutally honest Stephen Frail.

Reaction: How much lower can Hearts sink this season? Worringly, in a week when Hearts will send out bumph about renewing season tickets, it remains to be seen how many angry supporters will bother next season. The mass exodus at 3-0 was reminiscent of the dark days of the late 1970s.

Hearts: Gordon, Tall, Zaliukas (Karipidis 68), Berra, Goncalves, Mikoliunas, Aguiar, Pilibaitis, Driver, Pospisil (Glen 62), Velicka (Jankauskas 46). Subs Not Used: Banks, Ivaskevicius, Jonsson, Armstrong.

Aberdeen 1 Hearts 0

SPL, Saturday 10 March 2007 - Pittodrie

Billed as: The clash of the main contenders for a place in next season's UEFA Cup.

Reality: At the risk of sounding repetitive, another gutless performance from Hearts who could have played until midnight without scoring. And the sending off of Larry Kingston killed what slim chances they had stone dead.

The good: The final whistle from referee Steve Conroy was a blessed relief for the large travelling support - those who had stayed to the end that is.

The bad: Spineless, shoddy, woeful, lacking leadership...and Kingston receiving not one but two red cards, the second of which was for calling the referee a racist. Unbelievable.

They said it: "It makes things more difficult, but Aberdeen didn't secure European football today and we just need to learn from what happened, get back on the training ground and build towards facing Dundee United at the weekend." Stevie Frail again, hard pushed to find anything positive.

Hearts: Gordon, Kancelsku (Karipidis 39), Berra, Zaliukas, Wallace, Ivaskevicius, Kingston, Pilibaitis, Driver, Velicka (Jankauskas 71), Elliot (Pospisil 46).

Motherwell 0 Hearts 2

SPL, Monday 5 March 2007 - Fir Park

Billed as: Hearts first competitive game for more than a fortnight and a much-changed line up looking for a much-needed victory.

Reality: In terrible conditions, Hearts did enough to earn three valuable points and remain in the hunt for third place in the SPL.

The good: In keeping with the majority of Hearts performances this season, there wasn't a lot to write home about but the performance of new boy Larry Kingston warmed the heart (sorry...)

The bad: More Lithuanians in the team (Ivaskevicius and Pilibaitis) without making much of an impact.

They said it: "It was important to win after Rangers and Aberdeen won at the weekend, so we can go to Aberdeen feeling confident." Assistant Head Coach Stevie 'Shaggy' Frail.

Reaction: Another game, another Head Coach in charge, Russian Anatoly Korobochka who has taken over on an interim basis while Valdas Ivanauskas is, er, away. But at least it was three points at a venue where Hearts have struggled before and maintains the Jambos push for a place in Europe.

Hearts: Gordon, Wallace, Berra, Tall (Kancelsku 76), Zaliukas, Ivaskevicius (Jonsson 65), Driver, Kingston, Pilibaitis, Elliot, Jankauskas (Pospisil 46).

Hearts 1 St. Mirren 1

SPL, Saturday 17 February 2007 - Tynecastle

Billed as: Hearts chance to break their duck against the team promoted from last season's First Division (the Paisley Saints having beaten and drawn against Hearts already this season)

Reality: At the risk of sounding repetitive, this was yet another woeful performance from Hearts. Craig Gordon was back in goal but the team lacked ideas, lacked inspiration and huffed and puffed throughout.

The good: Larry Kingston's delicious free-kick which gave Hearts their equaliser - it was the one sublime moment in an afternoon to forget.

The bad: Where do you start? But the performance of referee Dougie 'I'm not a Hibby' McDonald was as consistent as it always is in Hearts games - awful.

They said it: "The players' confidence is down and it wasn't helped by the fact that we lost the first goal. We were disappointed because it was their only shot on goal. We will have to play better to get second spot." - no shit, Valdas Ivanauskas.

Reaction: Hearts season is disintegrating fast. The team selection changes every week and this is having an adverse effect on the team. More performances like this will see fans leaving in droves.

Hearts: Gordon, Tall, Zaliukas, Berra, Fyssas (Brellier 62), Mikoliunas (Klimek 76), Kingston, McCann, Driver, Pospisil, Velicka (Elliot 46). Subs Not Used: Banks, Karipidis, Jonsson, Pilibaitis.

Hearts 1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 0

SPL, Saturday 10 February 2007 - Tynecastle

Billed as: Hearts attempt to get back on track following the shock cup defeat at Dunfermline seven days earlier.

Reality: Another poor showing from the boys in maroon who struggled with the wintry conditions and stubborn resistance from an Inverness side who have a good record on the road.

The good: There were one or two neat touches from new striker Arkadiusz Klimek and another fine show from 'Larry' Kingston.

The bad: Yet again Hearts are treating one of their better players like dirt. Craig Gordon wasn't even in the squad this week and the best goalkeeper Hearts have ever had now appears to be heading down the same road as Andy Webster, Steven Pressley and Paul Hartley.

They said it: "I was in the right space at the right time - I didn't have time to think about it, it's just instinct" - Match winner Mickey Pospisil.

Reaction: A struggle for three points for Hearts but they got them in the end. But this is a shadow of the team that did well last season. Second place in the SPL? I don't think so...

Hearts: Banks, Tall, Zaliukas, Berra, Fyssas, Klimek (Pospisil 81), Kingston, Brellier, Driver, Jankauskas (Bednar 61), Elliot (Jonsson 73). Subs Not Used: Kurskis, McCann, Wallace, Karipidis.

Scottish Cup Fourth Round, Saturday 3 February 2007 - East End Park

Billed as: A chance for the cup holders to put recent events behind them with a visit to the team bottom of the SPL.

Reality: A punchless performance from Hearts who huffed and puffed all afternoon and got nowhere. Dunfermline scored with what seemed like their only worthwhile attempt on goal all afternoon - a last minute header from Scott Wilson from a free-kick that should never have been awarded (thank you Mike McCurry)

The good: The spirited performances of Andy Driver and Lee Wallace at least offers some hope.

The bad: Another ridiculous team selection. Calum Elliot and Michal Pospisil up front? Yer 'avin a laugh, Vlad.

They said it: "I think we are in situation where we are being seen as a diving team. It's a joke for me." Valdas Ivanauskas - but no one's laughing.

Reaction: The feeling I had after the game was one of anger more than disappointment. Hearts had the players to beat Dunfermline - they just didn't use them.

Hearts: Banks, Zaliukas, Karipidis (John Armstrong 61), Tall, Wallace, Mikoliunas (Jankauskas 75), Kingston, McCann, Driver, Pospisil (Bednar 67), Elliot. Subs Not Used: Gordon, Brellier.

Rangers 0 Hearts 0

SPL, Saturday 27 January 2007 - Ibrox

Billed as: Match of the Day in Scotland as Hearts sought a rare victory in Govan in an attempt to close the gap on second placed Rangers.

Reality: A gutsy performance from the maroons who gave as good as they got in the first half although they had to withstand a lot of Rangers pressure in the second period.

The good: Pressley, Webster and now it seems Gordon may no longer be the rock of the Hearts defence but Christophe Berra is now displaying authority in the back four.

The bad: Paul Hartley was dropped because 'he had other things on his mind' according to Valdas Ivanauskas. That means he's off next week then - hopefully not to today's opponents.

They said it: "Paul Hartley and Craig Gordon didn't play because of football business"  - Valdas Ivanauskas. So the other two-thirds of the Riccarton Three will soon be on their way.

Reaction: A good point at a venue where Hearts have struggled over the years. But, yet again, the game is overshadowed by events off the pitch.

Hearts: Banks, Karipidis, Zaliukas (Tall 68), Berra, Fyssas, Mikoliunas (Wallace 59), Aguiar, McCann, Driver, Bednar, Velicka (Elliot 81).

Hearts 1 Falkirk 0

SPL, Tynecastle, Saturday 20 January 2007

Billed as: The chance for Hearts to leapfrog Aberdeen into third place in the SPL as The Dons game at Motherwell was rained off.

Reality: Not a particularly impressive performance from the boys in maroon as they struggled with both the wind and lashing rain and a Falkirk team who can count themselves unfortunate not to take a point.

The good: Hard-pressed to say anything positive about a game that was, quite frankly, awful but the contribution of substitute Andy Driver was notable.

The bad: Well, how long have you got? Just about every Hearts player had an off day, the conditions were atrocious, the referee equally....ochone, ochone!

They said it: "It's a massive win for us - now we can concentrate on going to Ibrox to win next week" The ever-optimistic Stevie 'Shaggy' Frail, now Hearts Assistant Manager.

Reaction: An important, if somewhat lucky, three points for Hearts who now move into third place in the SPL. Falkirk will feel hard done by and their manager John Hughes was furious at the sending off of Barr at the end of the game. But Hearts are back on track after last week's loss to Celtic.

Hearts: Banks, Karipidis, Zaliukas (Tall 62), Berra, Fyssas, Mikoliunas (Driver 67), Hartley, Aguiar, McCann, Velicka, Mole (Bednar 52). Subs not used: Kurskis, Wallace, Tall, Pospisil, Brellier.

Booked: Karipidis, Velicka.

Top Man: On a day when it was difficult to pick a man of the match, Neil McCann deserved it if only for being one of the few players who wanted to keep the ball.

Hearts 1 Celtic 2

SPL, Sunday 14 January 2007 - Tynecastle

Billed as: The return to Tynecastle of Hearts legend Steven Pressley - only this time in a Celtic shirt and, in the absence of Neil Lennon and in a spurious attempt to wind up the home support, captain of the Glasgow side.

Reality: A thrilling, end to end contest in which Hearts had numerous chances particularly in the first half to add to their hard won lead. But a typical Celtic sucker punch meant the Jambos ended the day with nothing.

The good: Saulius Mikoliunas' quite superb goal which gave the home side the lead.

The bad: I'll always consider Steven Pressley a Hearts legend but his clench-fist salute to the Celtic fans at the end of the game stuck in the throat a bit. Elvis - you should have just left the building quietly.

They said it: "We're definitely happy.Hearts are definitely rivals and to come here and win is a great bonus." Celtic manager Gordon Strachan.

Hearts: Gordon, Barasa (Tall 23), Zaliukas, Berra, Fyssas, Mikoliunas, Hartley, McCann, Driver (Elliot 51), Velicka, Bednar (Pospisil 75).

Stranraer 0 Hearts 4

Scottish Cup Third Round, Saturday 6 January 2007 - Stair Park

Billed as: A tricky tie for Hearts in the defence of the trophy they won at Hampden Park last season.

Reality: Despite one or two early scares, a comfortable win for the cup holders.

The good: A fine performance from Andrius Velicka whose hat-trick included a couple of finely taken goals. And good to see Roman Bednar on the scoresheet for the first time since he scored against Celtic in August.

The bad: Hearts switched off for a spell at the start of the second half and Stranraer threatened to get back in the game - but the visitors were never in danger of losing.

They said it: "My first goal for six months - I needed that goal today" - You said it, Roman Bednar.

Reaction: A fine win for Hearts who, the last time they won the Scottish Cup, lost the opening round of the following season's competition. A hat-trick for Velicka should surely see the Lithuanian start against Celtic next week.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson (Mikoliunas 68), Wallace, Karipidis, Berra, Barasa, Aguiar, McCann (Jonsson 81), Driver, Velicka, Pospisil (Bednar 63). Subs Not Used: Banks, John Armstrong.

Dunfermline Ath. 0 Hearts 1

SPL, Tuesday 2 January 2007 - East End Park

Billed as: A chance for Hearts to keep in the chasing pack for that coveted second place in the SPL with a game against the team struggling at the bottom of the league.

Reality: Hearts did just enough to win the game although yet again the amount of missed chances are a concern.

The good: Six Scots started for Hearts today with another two on the substitute's bench. The return of Calum Elliot who had been on loan to Motherwell was a welcome sight.

The bad: An injury to young Lee Wallace that forced the full back off after just half an hour.

They said it: "It was a big surprise to come back to Hearts and go straight into the team. What did I learn at Motherwell? Er, I don't know...!" Calum Elliot gets full points for honesty if not diplomacy.

Reaction: Another vital three points for Hearts and, after a difficult spell, they remain in the hunt for second place in the league. It was good to see the return of Calum Elliot (even if he wasn't match fit) and Mickey Pospisil getting on the scoresheet again. Next up it's Stranraer as Hearts begin the defence of the Scottish Cup - before Celtic and Steven Pressley head for Tynecastle a week later...

Kilmarnock 0 Hearts 0

SPL, Saturday 30 December 2006 - RugbyPark

Billed as: Hearts chance to record three league wins in succession for the first time this season against a team who had won at Tynecastle earlier this season.

Reality: Despite dominating the game, Hearts never really looked like scoring and another two points have been spilt on the road.

The good: Another assured display from Christophe Berra although Takis Fyssas looked impressive on his return to the first team.

The bad: The squad rotation system - another half a dozen changes to the team that triumphed over Hibs. Get this, Vlad - IT DOES NOT WORK!

They said it: "I can't remember creating so many chances without scoring" A perplexed Valdas Ivanauskas.

Reaction: With Aberdeen losing and Rangers dropping points this was an ideal chance for Hearts to claw back the gap in the race for second place. But yet again poor finishing let them down.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Fyssas, Berra, Zaliukas, Aguiar, Hartley, Driver, Mikoliunas, Velicka (Makela 86), Pospisil (Bednar 66). Subs Not Used: Banks, Wallace, Barasa, McCann, Karipidis.

Hearts 3 Hibernian 2

SPL, Tuesday 26 December 2006 - Tynecastle

Billed as: The festive Edinburgh derby with Edinburgh's big team taking on the team that taught Brazil how to play football.

Reality: The festive Edinburgh derby with Edinburgh's big team taking on  - and beating once again - the team that taught Brazil how to play football. A rip-roaring game that saw Hearts storm ahead after two minutes, increase their lead early in the second half thanks to another howler from Hibs goalie, Malkowski, see Hibs fight back to draw level and then have Dean Shiels sent off for assaulting Craig Gordon, then Mikoliunas scoring a fine winner. It was breathless stuff.

The good: The character shown by the home team after Hibs had clawed back a two goal deficit. The tide may well have changed at that point but Hearts determination to win the game was never in doubt.

The bad: Defensively, Hearts were, at times, all over the place. But that's what happens when the club's owner dismantles the best defence in Scotland within ten months (Webster, Pressley already gone, Neilson and Fyssas nowhere to be seen today)

They said it: "In the second half we were fantastic. We passed the ball well, with great movement. Even with 10 men, we passed it and dominated the game, which tells you a lot about my team" Police are looking  for the culprit who spiked Hibs boss John Collins' half-time cuppa with a dangerous, hallucinating drug....

Reaction: One of the most exciting Edinburgh derbies of recent times with Hearts deserving all three points. Dean Shiels deserved his red card for his quite blatant push on Craig Gordon but Hearts always looked the likelier side in any case. And a special mention for Hibs keeper Zibby the Hibby Malkowski - we love you!

Hearts: Gordon, Barasa, Zaliukas, Berra, Goncalves (Wallace 9), Mikoliunas, Hartley, Brellier, McCann, Bednar (Pospisil 76), Jankauskas (Velicka 64). Subs Not Used: Banks, Aguiar, Karipidis, Driver.

Booked: Hartley, Brellier. Goals: Hartley 2, Jankauskas 49, Mikoliunas 70.

Dundee United 0 Hearts 1

SPL, Saturday 23 December 2006 - Tannadice

Billed as: Hearts looking to gain their first away win since September against a team whose manager is well known to the maroon hordes - and who had led United to three successive home victories.

Reality: A gritty, determined performance from Hearts who took all three points thanks to Paul Hartley's 54th minute penalty.

The good: Robbie Neilson and Takis Fyssas steadied the back four and restricted United to very few chances.

The bad: The Romanov factor - again. Craig Gordon was dropped to the subs bench by way of 'punishment' being part of the so-called 'Riccarton Three'. Valdas Ivanauskas said the keeper hadn't felt well in the morning hence the reason Steve Banks replaced him. Do us a favour...

They said it: "Banks was good, especially for the last 15 to 20 minutes, and it is great to have two experienced goalkeepers." Right then, Valdas...

Reaction: A good victory for Hearts over a resurgent Dundee United side at a venue which Craig Levein will make very difficult.

Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Berra, Zaliukas, Fyssas, Mikoliunas (Barasa 51), Hartley, Aguiar (Brellier 85), Driver, Velicka (Jankauskas 71), Pospisil. Subs Not Used: Gordon, McCann, Bednar, Wallace.
Booked: Pospisil, Barasa, Aguiar, Zaliukas.

Goal: Hartley 55 pen.

Hearts 0 Aberdeen 1

SPL, Saturday 16 December 2006 - Tynecastle

Billed as: A chance for Hearts to close the gap on second spot chasing Aberdeen.

Reality: Another poor game with neither side looking worthy of usurping Rangers for the Champions League qualifying place.

The good: Another fine performance from Bruno Aguiar. The main subject of today's match programme is in fine form after an unsettled period. Then again who hasn't been unsettled at Tynecastle recently?

The bad: It looks like Paul Hartley will be following Steven Pressley out of Tynecastle. PH had to make do with a place on the substitute's bench today. It's just a couple of weeks until January - Hartley may well be getting those farewell speeches ready as we speak.

They said it:  "I have been called to a disciplinary meeting on Tuesday. But I'm not worried. I will go in and listen to what they have to say. I will also have my say and see what happens from there." Craig Gordon, the last of the Riccarton Three to face disciplinary action.

Reaction: After last week's decent performance against Motherwell, Hearts yet again failed to deliver against an ordinary Aberdeen side. Now even second place looks beyond the maroons. Not long now until the Scottish Cup begins...

Hearts: Gordon, Barasa, Zaliukas (Hartley 64), Tall, Fyssas, Goncalves (Berra 90), Aguiar, Mikoliunas, McCann, Velicka, Jankauskas (Pospisil 75). Subs Not Used: Banks, Driver, Wallace, Jonsson.

Booked: Aguiar.

Hearts 4 Motherwell 1

SPL, Saturday 9 December 2006 - Tynecastle

Billed as: Hearts attempt to win their first league game since 1 October as the slide down the SPL continues.

Reality: Hearts win at last with their best display for some time although naturally it wasn't perfect. It was just as  'well' Hearts were up against a poor Motherwell side.

The good: The return to the side of Julien Brellier and the return to form of Bruno Aguiar

The bad: Zaliukas - is he a football player? Answers on a postcard to V. Romanov, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh

They said it: "I'll probably get into trouble with for this but I thought the ref did well for them for the second goal." Motherwell boss Maurice Malpas takes defeat gracefully as usual.

Reaction: A much needed win for Hearts lifts them up to fourth in the SPL. But the news afterwards that Steven Pressley had officially left the club overshadowed the result. Hearts have treated their finest skipper in a generation shamefully.

Hearts: Gordon, Barasa, Tall, Zaliukas, Fyssas, Mikoliunas, Brellier, Aguiar, McCann (Driver 81), Jankauskas (Pospisil 73), Velicka (Mole 77). Subs Not Used: Banks, Goncalves, Karipidis, Neilson.

Booked: Barasa, Aguiar.

Goals: Fyssas 9, Quinn 55 og, Velicka 58, Aguiar 64.

St. Mirren 2 Hearts 2

SPL, Saturday 2 December 2006 - Love Street.

Billed as: How will Hearts react after yet more off-field controversy? Steven Pressley was not even in the squad that travelled to Paisley and the chances of him playing in maroon again appear to be slim. Unless he signs for Arbroath or Stenhousemuir...

Reality: Another shell-shocked Hearts team took to the field and did their best. But it's yet another week without a win bonus.

The good: The return of Neil McCann and the Scotland player looks like getting back to the player we all loved a decade ago.

The bad: The sending off of Paul Hartley.

They said it: "If you want to know about Steven Pressley you'll know either tomorrow or Monday" Valdas Ivanauskas - interpreted that means he's got to wait until Romanov tells him what to say.

Reaction: Another two points lost and it's now two months since Hearts last won a game. Hearts are now in sixth place and the slide down the SPL continues worringly. Hearts did enough to earn a point but doing enough is simply not good enough.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Tall, Berra (Zaliukas 24), Fyssas, Mikoliunas, Aguiar (Brellier 82), Hartley, McCann, Jankauskas (Pospisil 78), Velicka.
Subs Not Used: Banks, Mole, Barasa, Goncalves.

Sent Off: Hartley (75). Booked: Hartley, McCann, Aguiar, Mikoliunas.

Inverness Caley Thistle 0 Hearts 0

SPL, Saturday 25 November 2006, Caledonian Stadium

Billed as: A real test for 'crisis-torn' Hearts whose slide down the SPL table is worringly picking up speed.

Reality: Another game without a goal for Hearts and another two points spilled although a draw at Inverness is not to be sniffed at.

The good: The appearance of Valdas Ivanauskas in the stand - the Head Coach has returned and although the Lithuanian won't resume his duties officially until Monday, his influence was apparent in the team selection - the return of Pressley, Neilson and Fyssas being cases in point.

The bad: A punchless attack - last season Hearts were scoring at will. This term, goals are becoming scarce.

Reaction: A reasonable result given another week of turmoil at Tynecastle. But the longer this winless streak goes on the more worrying it is.

They said it: "We always said the best men in training are selected," Sporting Director Alex Koslovski. Right, then.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Pressley, Berra, Fyssas (Wallace 68), Mikoliunas (McCann 87), Aguiar (Mole 83), Hartley, Brellier, Barasa, Velicka.
Subs Not Used: Banks, Tall, Jankauskas, Zaliukas.

Booked: Velicka, Barasa.

Hearts 0 Rangers 1

SPL, Sunday 19 November 2006, Tynecastle

Billed as: The clash  of two clubs in crisis but still hopeful of second place in the SPL.

Reality: A poor match, even by this season's standards, with mistake after mistake from both sides leading to a scrappy encounter. The poorest Rangers team I've seen for some time were still good enough to beat Hearts.

The good: Craig Gordon yet again produced some stunning saves. He will surely go down in history as Hearts greatest keeper.

The bad: Jamie Mole has obviously made a favourable impression on Vladimir Romanov. Why else does he get a starting-place on such a regular basis? He was replaced in the second half - by Romanov's favourite son, Saulius Mikoliunas.

They said it: "We have had a lot of turmoil since I have been at the club. We thought things had settled down but, maybe, it is just starting up again."  Stand-in skipper Paul Hartley. Methinks Celtic beckons for the Scotland star in January.

Reaction: Hearts are sliding down the league fast and at this rate the bottom six beckons. A team of dispirited players and a complete lack of unity or direction is costing the club dear. Just where all this ends is anyone's guess...

Hearts: Gordon, Barasa, Berra, Tall, Zaliukas, Aguiar, Brellier, Wallace (Goncalves 48), Hartley, Velicka, Mole (Mikoliunas 60). Subs Not Used: MacDonald, Pressley, Neilson, Jankauskas, Karipidis.

Booked: Zaliukas, Hartley.

Top man: Craig Gordon - yet again.

Falkirk 1 Hearts 1

SPL, Monday 13 November 2006 - The Falkirk Stadium

Billed as: A real test for Hearts given yet another Monday bombshell which revealed that Steven Pressley had been stripped of the captaincy  - with Elvis not making the trip to Falkirk. Paul Hartley and Robbie Neilson were relegated to the substitutes bench.

Reality: A demoralised Hearts actually played somewhat better than they did at Easter Road - not exactly an achievement, granted. Velicka maintained his goalscoring form by putting Hearts ahead in the second half but Russell Latapy equalised near the end to deny Hearts second place in the SPL.

The good: Christophe Berra took over as captain and the youngster performed well.

The bad: Another mind-boggling team selection. Hearts have indeed become a circus.

Reaction: Vladimir Romanov may have taken things too far by humiliating Steven Pressley. The Hearts captain is the finest skipper of the maroons I've ever seen and this latest crazy decision may mark a turning point in the 'Romanov Revolution'. The fans may no longer want to be part of it.

They said it: 'The fans are right behind the players. They always have been and always will be' - Craig Gordon - he must have still been in shock..

Hearts: Gordon, Zaliukas, Wallace, Karipidis, Berra, Barasa, Brellier (Hartley 90), Aguiar, Mikoliunas, Velicka, Mole (Makela 75). Subs Not Used: MacDonald, Neilson, Pospisil, Ivaskevicius, Jonsson.

Booked: Aguiar, Barasa. Goal: Velicka 65.

Hibernian 1 Hearts 0

CIS Insurance Cup, Wednesday 8 November 2006 - Easter Road

Billed as: The pick of the League Cup quarter-finals - an Edinburgh derby with Hibs out to avenge their Scottish Cup humiliation in April.

Reality: Another pitiful performance from Hearts. Hibs outplayed, outfought and outclassed a Hearts team that frankly didn't have a clue. Eduard Malofeev played Paul Hartley and Robbie Neilson out of position and the lack of passion from the team was frightening.

The good: Being thankful there was only one goal.

The bad: Take your pick. A non-existent midfield, a punchless attack, the predictable tactic of delivering long ball after long ball, players who didn't have a clue what they were supposed to be doing, etc. etc. etc...

Reaction: A shambles. The ructions behind the scenes at Tynecastle threatens to turn Hearts season from one of great promise to one of despair.

They said it: No one from Hearts was saying anything after the match. The fans deserved some kind of explanation.

Hearts: Gordon, Goncalves, Berra, Pressley, Tall, Neilson (Barasa 55), Mikoliunas (Mole 66), Aguiar, Hartley, Zaliukas (Makela 83), Velicka. Subs Not Used: Banks, Fyssas.

Booked: Zaliukas, Mikoliunas, Tall.

Celtic 2 Hearts 1

SPL, Saturday 4 November 2006 - Celtic Park

Billed as: First versus a distant second in the SPL

Reality: In a depressingly familiar tale at Celtic Park, Hearts lose two goals in the final five minutes and their already slim championship hopes disappear up the M8.

The good: The return to the first team of Bruno Aguiar - his absence has been sorely felt in the middle of the park.

The bad: Another controversial refereeing decision - Celtic's Jarosik clearly fouled before scooping home the equaliser and McManus appeared to handle the ball before Celtic's winner. But a rare mistake from Craig Gordon cost Hearts dear in injury time.

Reaction: Despite the absence of Steven Pressley - the reason given was he had the flu, if you'll willing to believe that - Hearts played better than they have done for weeks. Velicka's fifth goal of the season with twenty minutes left appeared to have secured a rare win in Glasgow but it wasn't to be. Hearts are now thirteen points behind Celtic.

They said it: "I am not blaming Gordon for the own goal, even if it was a mistake. That's football and we are all humans" Eduard Malofeev backs his keeper - as we all should.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Berra, Tall, Goncalves, Cesnauskis (Barasa 45), Hartley, Aguiar (Fyssas 80), Mikoliunas, Velicka, Zaliukas.
Booked: Tall, Neilson.

Hearts 1 Dunfermline Athletic 1

SPL, Saturday 28 October 2006 - Tynecastle

Billed as: A crucial game for Hearts coming not only after last weekend's defeat but after the Hearts players issued a statement declaring how unhappy they were with the people currently running Hearts. The statement - jointly made by Steven Pressley, Craig Gordon and Paul Hartley - came after Vladimir Romanov reportedly told the players if they didn't beat Dunfermline they would all be transferred.

Reality: Another poor performance from Hearts whose collective minds seemed to be elsewhere.

The good: The tremendous backing given to the team from the supporters - one of Hearts biggest crowds of the season was immense.

The bad: More defensive frailities and a once proud home record is now in tatters.

They said it: 'I don't want to make any more comment on yesterday's statement' - Captain Steven Pressley tries hard to contain his displeasure at the latest twist in the Tynecastle soap opera.

Reaction: Given the events of Friday when Hearts players voiced their concerns over the sad state of affairs at Tynecastle, the fact Hearts didn't lose the game is something we should be grateful for. But, as with last season, Hearts continue to shun the possbility of league success. Ten points dropped in home games to St. Mirren, Falkirk, Kilmarnock and Dunfermline is woeful - full points form these games would have seen Hearts top of the league. What happens next is anyone's guess...

Hearts: Gordon, Tall (Brellier 83), Pressley, Berra, Neilson, Hartley, Goncalves, Wallace, Cesnauskis (Aguiar 77), Bednar (Jankauskas 52), Velicka. Subs Not Used: Banks, Fyssas, Mikoliunas, Zaliukas.Booked: Gordon, Neilson.

Hearts 0 Kilmarnock 2

SPL, Saturday 21 October 2006  -  Tynecastle

Billed as: A chance for Hearts to keep the heat on Celtic in the first of successive home league games.

Reality: Another lost chance for a poor Hearts team who were awful in the second half in particular. Squad rotation? Don't make me laugh...

The good: Robbie Neilson at least marked his tenth avviversary at Tynecastle with a solid display.

The bad: Where do I begin? Even the captain struggled and some of the players gave in all too easily in a woeful secod half.

They said it: 'Valdas, my good man. My Kaunas office, Monday morning, 9.00am' - Vladimir Romanov issues the Head Coach a directive - possibly his last one...

Reaction: Possibly Hearts worst display of the season - even worse than the loss to St. Mirren. It looks like the end of the road for Happy Man Ivanauskas.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Pressley, Berra, Wallace (Aguiar 66), Beslija (McCann 62), Hartley, Tall, Cesnauskis, Bednar, Jankauskas (Velicka 56).

Booked: Jankauskas, Neilson, Bednar, Berra.

Hibernian 2 Hearts 2

SPL, Sunday 15 October 2006 - Easter Road

Billed as: The first Edinburgh derby of the season with Hearts looking to secure their first league win in Leith in nearly four years.

Reality: Hearts recovered from losing two early goals to salvage a point - this in spite of losing Mikoliunas to a second yellow card with half an hour to play. Velicka's two goals were helped by another hapless display by Hibs keeper Malkowski who was at fault for both.

The good: The character shown by the team to come back after a nightmare opening fifteen minutes when Hibs went two goals ahead and threatened to run riot.

The bad: Romanov's team selection. The team he picked today was based purely on the fact that the game was live on Lithuanian television. So we had numpties like Zaliukas and Mikoliunas playing when there were obviously better players sitting on the bench. It very nearly cost Hearts the game. Quite what Steven Pressley, Paul Hartley and Craig Gordon think of all this is anyone's guess - surely you must put your strongest team on the park at all times, let alone a game against Hibs?

They said it: "We will require favours from other teams if we're to stick with Celtic this season, because I believe that we are a capable side and a very good side." Captain Steven Pressley.

Reaction: Vlad may be a saviour with the fans for saving the club but he's starting to alienate many with his team selections. Don't mess with the Edinburgh derby, Vlad or you may face a revolution! Still, Hearts first point at Easter Road in over eighteen months so for that we should be thankful.

Hearts: Gordon, Tall, Pressley, Berra, Wallace, Mikoliunas, Hartley, Zaliukas (Aguiar 75), Cesnauskis, Velicka (Makela 81), Mole (Beslija 67). Subs Not Used: Banks, Neilson, Fyssas, Bednar. Sent Off: Mikoliunas (59).

Booked: Pressley, Mikoliunas, Velicka, Berra. Goals: Velicka 28, 72.

Top man: Yet again it's Craig Gordon - his stunning one-handed save from Rob Jones in the last minute earned Hearts a point.

Hearts 4 Dundee Utd 0

SPL, Sunday 1 October 2006 - Tynecastle

Billed as: Hearts return to league business after the disappointment of going out of the UEFA Cup on Thursday.

Reality: More sweeping changes as the squad rotation system operates again. But a much longed for ninety minutes for Mirsad Beslija and a starting place for Juho Makela.

The good: Beslija at last gets a chance to show what he can do. And the £850,000 man let no one down, his stunning cross for Makela to net Hearts second goal ample proof of his ability.

The bad: The way Hearts drifted out of the game a bit at the beginning of the second half.

They said it: "We were more together today than we were in our last home game" - Paul Hartley, delighted to have scored his first goal of the season.

Hearts: Gordon, Tall, Pressley, Berra, Fyssas, Beslija, Hartley, Aguiar, Mikoliunas (Cesnauskis 56), Velicka (Mole 84), Makela (Bednar 61).
Subs Not Used: Banks, Neilson, Wallace, Zaliukas.

Sparta Prague 0 Hearts 0

UEFA Cup First Round, Second Leg, Thursday 28 September 2006 - Toyota Stadium, Prague

Aggregate score Sparta Prague 2 Hearts 0

Billed as: Last chance saloon for Hearts as they attempted to overcome a two goal defecit from the first leg in Edinburgh a fortnight ago.

Reality: A disappointing Hearts team rarely threatened with the only noteworthy chances falling to Devidas Cesnauskis and Jamie Mole - and both were wasted.

The good: Some respect was restored as Hearts avoided defeat and Pinilla was again impressive without actually creating any clearcut opportunities.

The bad: Saulius Mikoliunas - the Lithuanian struggled yet again but his name is among the first on the team-sheet. And Miko - quit the diving, eh, there's a good lad.

They said it: "I think we lost this game at Murrayfield" - Valdas Ivanauskas stating the bleedin' obvious.

Reaction: Another huge disappointment as Hearts departed the European scene for another year with a whimper rather than a bang. Why was Bednar on the bench when his experience could have been vital? Why indeed.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson (Tall 66), Pressley, Berra, Wallace, Mikoliunas, Brellier, Hartley, Cesnauskis, Mole (Bednar 56), Pinilla (Aguiar 83). Subs Not Used: Banks, Beslija, Makela, Lithgow.

Aberdeen 1 Hearts 3

SPL, Sunday 24 September 2006 - Pittodrie

Billed as: Fourth against second and a real test of Hearts title aspirations.

Reality: After a fairly even first half, Hearts dominated the second period and ran out comfortable winners to open up a four point gap in second place in the SPL.

The good: Mauricio Pinilla looks to be a forward of real quality.

The bad: Sadly, Pinilla throwing the ball away earned him a second yellow card - and therefore a red. And if anyone knows what planet Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood is on please tell the authorities...

They said it: "I thought we dominated until the first goal but we defended too deep at a free kick and we were punished," Jimmy Calderwood proving that care in the community isn't really working.

Reaction: A fine second half performance from Hearts with Hartley, Berra and Pinilla immense. Hearts won comfortably in the end at a venue where other teams have struggled.

Hearts: Gordon, Tall, Pressley, Berra, Wallace, Mikoliunas, Zaliukas (Brellier 79), Hartley, McCann (Cesnauskis 74), Bednar (Makela 88), Pinilla. Subs Not Used: Banks, Neilson, Aguiar, Mole. Sent Off: Pinilla (84).

Booked: Pressley, McCann, Zaliukas, Pinilla. Goals: Berra 64, Pinilla 76, Mikoliunas 81.

Alloa Athletic 0 Hearts 4

CIS Insurance Cup, Third Round, Wednesday 20 September 2006 - Recreation Park

Billed as: A chance for Hearts fringe players to stake their claim for a first team place.

Reality: A chance for Hearts fringe players to stake their claim for a first team place!

The good: Striker Juho Makela's hat-trick, proving the Finn hasn't lost the goalscoring touch which made him such a hit in his homeland.

The bad: A facial injury to Mirsad Beslija  - the lad seems to have nae luck in his Hearts career.

They said it: "I was happy how serious the players understood the situation" - The ever serious Valdas Ivanauskas.

Reaction: A good performance from the fringe players and Hearts await Saturday's quarter-final draw. Juho Makela must have a good chance of starting at Pittodrie on Sunday.

Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Fyssas, Karipidis (Lithgow 45), Berra, Beslija (Jonsson 45), Aguiar, Ivaskevicius, McCann, Makela, Bednar (Velicka 60). Subs Not Used: MacDonald, Thorarinsson.

Top man: Juho Makela - it's not often a Hearts player scores a hat-trick!

Motherwell 0 Hearts 1

SPL, Sunday 17 September 2006 - Fir Park

Billed as: Possibily Valdas Ivanauskas last game in charge of Hearts - recent abject performances by his team have placed his future in Edinburgh in jeopardy.

Reality: Another abject performance from Hearts but one good enough to clinch three crucial points - and keep Valdas in his job for another game or two.Jamie Mole's second half goal was enough to give Hearts the win.

The good: Craig Gordon's magnificent save from Jim Paterson meant three points for Hearts instead of just one. He really is the best keeper in the country.

The bad: Another bizarre team selection. Whether it's Ivanauskas or Romanov, can they at least provide some consistency when picking the team? No Beslija today - why not? And why was Robbie Neilson on the subs bench? And what the hell does Mikoliunas have to do to get dropped? I could go on and on...

They said it: 'It wasn't pretty but the three points were all that mattered' - Craig Gordon, the man who helped Hearts earn those points.

Reaction: Hearts once again played poorly. The sparkle that was evident in last season's successful campaign has gone. that said, remarkably Hearts are back in second place in the SPL. But let's hope for some decent form soon, eh?

Hearts: Gordon, Tall, Pressley, Zaliukas, Wallace, Mikoliunas, Hartley, Brellier (Neilson 54), Cesnauskis (McCann 27), Mole, Velicka (Makela 72).

Subs not used: Banks, Fyssas, Karipidis, Ivaskevicius.

Hearts 0 Sparta Prague 2

UEFA Cup, 1st Round, 1st Leg, Thursday 14 September 2006 - Murrayfield

Billed as: Hearts consolation prize in Europe, having been knocked out of the Champions League by AEK Athens.

Reality: Another woeful European performance from Hearts who were outfought and outclassed by the Czechs in much the same way as AEK won at Murrayfield last month.

The good: That no player got seriously injured on a sodden pitch that was unplayable in parts thanks to the torrential rain that fell in Edinburgh for much of the day.

The bad: Getting absolutely drenched on the way to the game from the Station Tavern and having to sit for ninety minutes in soaking wet clothes.

They said it: 'I can only apologise to the fans for our performance tonight. They deserved more.' A dejected captain Steven Pressley - too bloody right, Steven.

Reaction: Another miserable European night for Hearts supporters. The team was poor yet again and there seemed to be no direction or inspiration. Forget about getting an early goal in Prague in a fortnight - Sparta are a much better team. But then they didn't need to be to beat Hearts...

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Pressley, Berra, Wallace, Beslija (Tall 63), Aguiar, Hartley, Mole, Pinilla (Cesnauskis 63), Bednar.
Subs Not Used: Banks, Fyssas, Makela, Karipidis, Park.

Booked: Aguiar.

Goals: Kolar 34, Matusovic 71.

Hearts 0 St. Mirren 1

SPL, Saturday 9 September 2006 - Tynecastle

Billed as: A chance for Hearts to keep with Celtic at the top of the SPL.

Reality: A woeful performance in which Hearts were outfought and outplayed and were second to most fifty-fifty balls.

The good: Full-time at least brought an end to an afternoon of agony.

The bad: Where the hell do I start? Complacency may have been partly to blame but not one Hearts player played well. But I'll reserve the 'bad' tag  - not for the first time - for referee Dougie McDonald. He can't make his dislike of Hearts any clearer.

They said it: "It's great to win at an intimidating ground, but it's still only three points and the efforts the team put in will have to be repeated all season." An elated St. Mirren manager Gus Macpherson.

Reaction: The least said about a truly awful performance the better.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Pressley, Berra, Fyssas, Mikoliunas (Beslija 84), Hartley, Brellier, McCann (Velicka 72), Mole (Pinilla 59), Bednar. Subs Not Used: Banks, Wallace, Karipidis, Zaliukas.

Hearts 4 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 1

Scottish Premier League, Saturday 26 August 2006 - Tynecastle

Billed as: A real test for Hearts after their exertions in Athens on Wednesday night.

Reality: A fine win for a much changed Hearts team with Ivanauskas giving home debuts to Zaliukas, Pinilla and Costa. Brellier, Jankauskas, Bednar, Goncalves, Tall and Berra were injured with Robbie Neilson suspended and Fyssas fit only for the subs bench.

The good: A return to the swashbuckling Hearts performances of last season. Pinilla looked lively and both he and young Jamie Mole made scoring home debuts.

The bad: Scottish referees - don't you just love them? Well done Steve Conroy for maintaining the awful standard set this season.

They said it: "It was the first time in front of the home fans for some players and althought they were nervous to begin with, I felt they did well overall," Our man Valdas 'Happy' Ivanauskas

Reaction: A fine result and performance against a team that has an excellent record away from home. Hearts always looked threatening and with so many players missing it was heartening to see young lads such as Lee Wallace, Jamie Mole and Andy Driver play so well.

Hearts: Gordon, Costa, Pressley, Karipidis, Wallace, Mikoliunas, Hartley (Aguiar 79), Zaliukas, McCann (Driver 76), Pinilla (Makela 86), Mole. Subs Not Used: Banks, Beslija, Fyssas, Lithgow.

Goals: Pinilla 20, Mole 42, Driver 80, Aguiar 90.

AEK Athens 3 Hearts 0

UEFA Champions League Third Qualifying Round, 2nd Leg (agg 5-1) Wednesday 23 August 2006

Billed as: The biggest game in Hearts history and a chance for Hearts to pull off the greatest victory in their history.

Reality: After a bright opening the bizarre sending off of Julien Brellier put paid to Hearts chances. Russian referee Yuri Baskakov booked JB for wearing an earring (true, folks) then booked the Frenchman again for an inoccuous challenge. What faint hopes Hearts had disappeared altogether when Neil McCann also saw red in the second half - nine man Hearts capitulated in the final fifteen minutes and conceded three goals to a team that played nothing like the way they did a fortnight ago.

The good: The return of Devidas Cesnauskis from injury.

The bad: Leaving aside the referee, Neil McCann's stupid two-footed challenge was the final nail in Hearts Champions League dream.

They said it: "Football is supposed to be what is happening on the field of play, not turned into a show thanks to the referee," Vladimir Romanov has another go at referees - with justification.

Reaction: Hearts were always up against it after the first leg defeat but their display in the opening half hour restored some pride. Now the UEFA Cup beckons.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Pressley, Berra, Fyssas, Brellier, Mikoliunas, McCann, Cesnauskis (Wallace 81), Hartley (Jankauskas 61), Mole (Pinilla 89).
Subs Not Used: Banks, Beslija, Karipidis, Elliot.

Sent Off: Brellier (30), McCann (63). Booked: Neilson, Brellier, Mikoliunas, Fyssas.

Att: 45,000

Ref: Yuri Baskakov (Russia)

Top man: Deividas Cesnauskis looked short of fitness but nevertheless looked threatening

Rangers 2 Hearts 0

SPL Saturday 19 August 2006 - Ibrox

Billed as: Match of the day in Scotland with two of the main challengers for the league title coming head -to-head at Ibrox.

Reality: Mismatch of the day, particularly in the second half when Hearts lost two goals in the opening five minutes and simply crumbled. Even the official Hearts website declared it was 2-0 but could have been 12-0.

The good: On an afternoon when little went right for Hearts, the return of Paul Hartley for the final twenty minutes was scant consolation. How we miss a fully fit 'Zico'.

The bad: Robbie Neilson's sending off in the final minute for what was really a needless foul - he'll now miss next week's game with Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

They said it: "Playing three strikers failed today and Rangers deserved their win" At least Valdas Ivanauskas is honest - who else suspects he may not be around next weekend, particularly if Hearts lose heavily in Athens on Wednesday?

Reaction: We've got used to Hearts giving the Old Firm a run for their money these days but today's performance harked back to the days of Craig Levein when Hearts were afraid to go to Ibrox and Celtic Park. We can only hope that AEK Athens will be complacent when Hearts almost certainly end their Champions League campaign on Wednesday - a real hammering is a possibility...

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Pressley, Berra, Fyssas, Mikoliunas (Hartley 70), Aguiar, Brellier, Elliot, Jankauskas, Bednar (Pospisil 45), Pospisil (McCann 62). Subs Not Used: Banks, Wallace, Karipidis, Mole.

Sent Off: Neilson (90).

Booked: Brellier, Pressley, Fyssas, Neilson.

Att: 50,239

Ref: K Clark

Top man: Craig Gordon saved Hearts from a heavier defeat.

Hearts 0 Falkirk 0

Scottish Premier League - Saturday 12 August 2006, Tynecastle

Billed as: A top of the table clash between two sides with one hundred per cent records in the league thus far.

Reality: A nasty, ill-tempered game with chances few and far between. On this evidence neither team will be in the top two at the end of the season.

The good: When referee John Underhill blew the final whistle shortly after 4.45pm to put us all out of our misery.

The bad: Where do I begin? Poor passing, sloppy defending, a non-existent midfield...you get the picture.

They said it: "I can understand the fans' reaction but it wasn't easy. If we had scored the first goal, it would have been OK, but time went on and our players got tired. They want a positive result all the time, but it is not always possible."  - our friend Valdas Ivanauskas is at least consistent in backing his players. I'm not so sure this will wash with Vladimir Romanov though...

Reaction: Hearts actually went top of the SPL after this game but it was woeful stuff, a stark contrast to last week's win over Celtic. Paul Hartley is a huge miss - the sooner he returns the better. And, Valdas, we need a decent striker. Mickey Pospisil couldn't hit the proverbial barn door...

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Pressley, Berra, Fyssas, Mikoliunas, Aguiar, Brellier (Beslija 60), McCann (Elliot 80), Pospisil (Jankauskas 67), Bednar. Subs Not Used: Banks, Makela, Wallace, Karipidis.

Hearts 1 AEK Athens 2

Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round, 1st Leg

Wednesday 9 August 2006 - Murrayfield

Billed as: Potentially and certainly financially, Hearts biggest game in their history.

Reality: A real masterclass from seasoned European campaigners. AEK Athens may have scored two late goals to secure victory but they outclassed Hearts throughout and were worthy winners.

The good: A difficult night for Hearts but Christophe Berra again showed why Hearts won't miss Andy Webster.

The bad: It may have been Hearts biggest home attendance for more than thirty years but Murrayfield was still half empty - and the atmosphere was muted. Had the game been at Tynecastle who knows what might have happened?

They said it: "I am very angry, not about our performance, but about the referee. He cost us the game" Valdas Ivanauskas sounds as if he has been attending the John Robertson masterclass in excuses.

Reaction: Despite the usual noises from Tynecastle, Hearts are as good as out of the Champions League. Let's hope for a decent run in the UEFA Cup.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Fyssas, Berra, Pressley, McCann, Mikoliunas, Aguiar, Karipidis (Jankauskas 55), Bednar (Wallace 69), Pospisil (Elliot 82).
Subs Not Used: Banks, Beslija, Makela, Mole.

Sent Off: Aguiar (66). Booked: Aguiar, McCann.

Goal: Mikoliunas 62.

Goals: Kapetanos 89, Berra 90 og.

Hearts 2 Celtic 1

Scottish Premier League,  Sunday 6 August 2006 - Tynecastle

Billed as: First against second from last season, the champions against the young pretenders.

Reality: If the Old Firm thought Hearts were one season wonders they need to think again. Tynecastle rocked as Hearts recorded their second win in a row over Celtic in Gorgie.

The good: Young Lee Wallace took up where he left off with the Scotland under 19s and produced an outstanding performance.

The bad: Yet another wrong decision by officials against the Old Firm. The Wheatfield Stand linesman flagged offside to deny Roman Bednar when the ball through to the Czech was clearly onside. It could have cost Hearts two points. When are the SFA going to take some action against incompetent officials?

They said it: "Hearts used their power play and long ball game which is their style. We have our own style but it wasn't to be our day today" Gordon Strachan, as gracious in defeat as he's ever been...

Reaction: A great second half performance from Hearts and a win that was just about deserved. Did anyone feel sorry for Neil Lennon, whose slack passback enabled Roman Bednar to score the late winner? Nah, thought not...

Hearts: Gordon, Tall (Neilson 27), Pressley, Berra, Wallace, Mikoliunas, Aguiar, Brellier, McCann (Cesnauskis 63), Bednar, Pospisil (Makela 83).
Subs Not Used: Banks, Beslija, Elliot, Karipidis.

Booked: Brellier.

Goals: Bednar 49, 87.

Top man: Two goal Roman Bednar

Champions League 2nd Round Qualifier 2nd Leg

Wednesday 2 August 2006 - Bosnia

Billed as: Hearts finishing their Champions League business after winning the first leg 3-0 at Murrayfield seven days earlier.

Reality: Hearts huffed and puffed without ever being seriously threatened. A Neil McCann 'goal' was disallowed for a reason which only the Hungarian referee could explain while Craig Gordon showed by he is the best goalkeeper in Scotland with a couple of brilliant saves.

The good: As well as Craig Gordon, Robbie Neilson was immense in defence. Why, then, was he substituted after an hour?

The bad: If anyone can tell me if Mickey Pospisil actually touched the ball I'd be grateful.

They said it: "Craig Gordon made a couple of good saves but that's what he's there for and we were always comfortable."   Coach John McGlynn gives his goalie faint praise.

Reaction: A poor performance but the result clinched a place in the third qualifying round of the Champions League against AEK Athens.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson (Tall 60), Fyssas, Pressley, McCann (Mikoliunas 61), Aguiar, Pospisil, Bednar, Cesnauskis (Beslija 85), Berra, Brellier.
Subs Not Used: Banks, Makela, Wallace, Mole.

Booked: Bednar, Mikoliunas.

Dunfermline Athletic 1 Hearts 2

Scottish Premier League, Saturday 29 July 2006 - East End Park

Billed as: Another 'away day' opening fixture for Hearts, sandwiched between two vital Champions League qualifiers.

Reality: A tough, physical game in which Dunfermline fought tooth and nail, determined to show they paid little respect to Hearts status as the main challengers to the Old Firm in Scottish football.

The good: Mickey Pospisil making a rare start up front in the absence of the suspended Eddie Jankauskas. The Czech striker looked a handful and was rewarded with his late goal which secured three points for the JTs.

The bad: A nasty game with eight bookings and one sending off. The Pars clearly lost the plot in the second half - and this on the first day of the season.

They said it: I thought some of the referee's decisions were confusing and inconsistent and that is what frustrates me - Dunfermline manager Jim Leishman. A Scottish referee inconsistent? Shurley shum mishtake??

Reaction: A good opening day result if not the performance to go with it.

Hearts: Gordon, Neilson, Fyssas, Berra, Pressley, Brellier, Aguiar, Mikoliunas, McCann, Pospisil, Bednar.
Subs: Banks, Tall, Makela, Cesnauskis, Mole, Neill, Driver.

Referee: B Winter

Top man: Mickey Pospisil

Hearts 3 Siroki Brijeg 0

UEFA Champions League
Second Round Qualifier, 1st Leg
Wednesday 26 July 2006

Billed as: Hearts first game in the European Cup since 1960
and the first steps on the road to trying to qualify for the 'lucrative group stages'
(a recently added football cliche)

Reality: A cagey first half performance against modest opposition but once
Hearts scored the confidence flowed. A decent first leg lead for the return next week.

The good: A quite superb performance from Robbie Neilson who defended resolutely -
he's matured into a full back of some stature. And a fine performance from referee
Espen Bernsten (Scottish referees - take note)

The bad: The lack of atmosphere at times, particularly in the first half. With nearly
30,000 fans there it would have made much more sense to have them all in the lower
tier of Murrayfield. The empty seatsd behind one of the goals didn't look good.

They said it: It's an okay result but there's still work to be done - Valdas Ivanauskas

Reaction: A good result for a team without the hugely influential Paul Hartley -
fingers crossed they avoid calamity in Bosnia and go into the draw for the third round
with the big guns.

Hearts 2 Osasuna 0 Friendly 19 July 2006

Billed as: A dress rehearsal for Hearts first ever Champions League game next week. Spanish side Osasuna are, after all, fellow Champions League qualifiers.

Reality: What began as a real test for Hearts - who began the game with their strongest starting eleven available - ended little more than a bounce match as the maroons made ten (yes, ten) substitutions with Craig Gordon the only player to stay on the park for ninety minutes.

The good: Devidas Cesnauskis looked menacing all evening -  if the Lithuanian can achieve consistency this season he'll be a huge asset. And another Lithuanian - trialist Velicka - did his chances of getting a permanent deal no harm by scoring the opening goal with a fine lob from the edge of the penalty box.

The bad: Eddie Jankauskas did little to impress. And the Murrayfield pa system - turn the volume down fellas!

The ugly: Even worse than at Preston, the number of substitutions made in the second half. How much actual 'play' we saw is debatable.

They said it: Stadium Announcer Scott Wilson said the game was live on Arabic television station Al-Jezeera - 'and now, before an announcement from Osama Bin Laden, here's the action from the Hearts-Osasuna game'

Reaction: Another good win for Hearts  - I would take a similar result when the real deal happens next week.

Hearts: Gordon; Neilson (Pospisil, 60), Pressley (Tall, 60), Berra, Fyssas (Kancelskis, 60); Cesnauskis (Velicka, 60), Brellier (Zaliukas, 34), Aguiar (Johnson, 79), Driver (McCann, 61); Bednar (Mikoliunas, 65), Jankauskas (Waskievicius, 60)

Referee: Calum Murray

Preston North End 1 Hearts 2 Friendly 15 July 2006

Billed as: A very useful pre-season run-out for Hearts against the English Championship side who missed out on promotion to the FA Premiership last season after losing in the play-offs.

Reality: Little more than a training session for both clubs before the serious business starts - for Hearts this is now just eleven days away. Goals from Bednar and Mikoliunas put Hearts two ahead before the twenty minute mark before Whaley pulled one back for PNE three minutes before the break. Miko's goal, in particular was quite superb.

The good: Portugese trialist Tiago Costa looked good when he replaced Takis Fyssas in the second half.

The bad: Hearts defence not looking too clever at PNE's goal just before half-time.

The ugly: The number of substitutions made in the second half - typical of these games.

They said it: PNE fans taunting their Hearts counterparts with 'Champions League - You're Having a Laugh' Regulars at Deepdale are, of course, experts on European football matters.

Reaction: A good win for Hearts although a bit of fine tuning is still required before the club makes its Champions League debut the week after next.

Hearts: Banks, Neilson, Pressley (Tall, 46), Berra, Fyssas (Costa, 55); Mikoliunas, Brellier (Johnson, 60), Aguiar (Neill, 78), Driver (Beslija, 69); Bednar (Mole, 71), Pospisil (Makela, 71). Subs not used:  MacDonald.

Referee: Chris Foy
