We've added a widget below, giving the average gas prices in the country. Now, I know it is a little intimidating, but we've included an article, previously published on www.vannin.com to help you digest what it really means. Hopefully, once you read the article, it will put the current gas prices in perspective.

"HERE WE GO AGAIN... Just the other day I told you that gasoline up here in our little town was selling for $3.37 /gallon.....I mentioned also that it would be going up again.....The next day I looked and it had jumped to $3.43....on it's way to $3.50 or more.....That's enough to scare the crap out of vanners who are working at regular wages- although it probably doesn't bother the yuppies up here who are tooling along in their Hummers .....

What does it mean to you and I ?   Surprisingly it isn't QUITE as bad as it sounds...Every year I write this column and explain what the fuel cost means for an average trip to a van event..I will do so again now...

For this purpose  I assume the figure of 14 mpg....That's not too far off the mileage for the average V8 van with a stock engine...We will figure on a trip total distance of 400 miles round trip. Again that is probably an average  distance... SO-  didvide the price in the left hand column by 14..This gives you a factor...Multiply this factor by 400 to arrive at the total cost....

Price.....................................Factor..........................Cost

3.30.................................      .2357 ......................     $94.28

3.43..................................      .245 .......................      $98.00

3.50..................................      .25 .........................      $100.00

4.00 ...................................     .2857........................    $114.28

Using this chart you can see that the difference in cost between $3.30 and $4.00 is only $20.00......AND you can save that much by doing two things.....First- pre-reg to the events you intend to visit and two- consider driving at a pace closer to the posted speed limit...I know that goes against the grain for some of you but as I have proved many times this will add several more mpg to your mileage....

And consider this- If you travel closer to the posted speed limits you will avoid those costly tickets and will not have to deal with some patrolman sticking his head in your drivers window...You don't want that -right "

Re-printed from Knighty's Knotebook appearing on www.vannin.com

Don't forget to factor in the price for the event compared to the number of days (i.e. Midwest's truck-in is a holiday weekend, so you are getting an extra day for your money) to help in determining your overall value when attending a particular event. And, as Knighty so eloquently expresses above, pre-reg'ing to an event adds to your savings even more. (Especially if you win one of the gas cards we are giving away in a pre-reg only drawing) Hope to see you in May!
