The attitude of chinchillas vairy, of course, as do humans. All of them are different. I think it all has to do with the chinchilla, how it was raised, & how often it gets/got attention int he past.
In my years of having chinchillas I get this one VERY question asked a lot, "What sex is better, male or female?" I would have to say in my opinion, Males are the best. Although i know many people would probly disagree. But in my time with the animals, I have bonded closer to all my males over the females. There are a slim exceptionto the females though. I have had good & bad of each, just more good males. But i do believe females are more afraid of everything, & a bit more jumpy/grumpy about things. (meaning they will pee at you when scared or mad!)They also go into heat & I feel get a bit mean around that time.
As for taming them, I think you have to give that time as well as everything else. You must handle them as much as possible, that will make them feel closer to you. First start off by offering a treat if they come to you when you put your hand at the cage door. (not through the bars though. That will create bad habbits such as biting & coming to the cage door for the wrong reasons.) Once the chinchilla is tame enough to come out to you, start picking it up. Holding it for small periods of time. Then longer & so on. Reward with a treat either while holding or after putting them in the cage. DON'T FORCE THEM TO BE HELD THOUGH-THAT WILL DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD!!!! When you put them back in the cage after a run give them a treat & a chin scratch. Do this after placing them into the cage so they know going back in the cage isn't so bad. (this will make it easier for you to catch them!!) haha Some of mine love to go for rides on our shoulders too. It's so cool, i love it! Keep in mind not ALL chinchilla till tolerate being held. Some dont mind & some will never be 'lap chinchillas.'
The key to bonding is.........
TIME!!!!
