Cleaning is generaly easy. It should be done once a week at least!
If you don't like dust collecting on things, maybe this isn't the right pet for you. You can use a dried pine bedding. There are all kinds of things you can use. I use pine shavings. (not cedar, that' bad for the chinchillas lungs & eyes) The BEST bedding to use is the carefresh brand even though this is expensive compared to other kinds.
Cleaning the cage doesn't take but maybe 5 minutes, depending on what kind of cage you have. I like the ones that either slide out or lift out of the cage. (The slide ones are the BEST!!) Then you just throw away the bedding, wipe down the tray, put new bedding in, & your set. You will want to clear out any soiled hay or pellets. You should also always take the time once a week to clean the water bottle out with a bottle cleaner. Every so often you will also want to hose down the cage to make sure its completely clean from urin & other matter.
You will need to dust a lot with your pet chinchilla. (since they take a bath in dust)
They always poo, so that can get on peoples nerves as well. You just have to remember to sweep a lot. (If you have a young child, you may want to keep them away from the cages or off the floor!!!) Some people like it better when they are in their own room, so all the poo, smell, fur & dust stays in there. You can also make a ‘poo shield’ out of plexiglass or cardboard. That helps A LOT as they tend to fling poo, hay, pellets, & bedding!
I burn all natural inscents a lot to keep the smell of all the animals down. That seems to work best. Natural Nag Champa ones are GREAT!!! We also have a Plug in Fan & that helps so MUCH! You don’t want to burn insecnets if you do not have any type of ventilation going either. I would highly recommend the Plug in fan & inscents for smell cover up.
