What is veganism?

Veganism is a way of life avoiding the use of all animal products. The most common reasons cited for becoming vegan, according to the Vegan Society, are:

  • Animal welfare
  • Health
  • Religious/spiritual beliefs
  • Environmental concerns
  • Resource use (ie it takes more land and water to raise livestock than to raise crops)

Loads of people I know find veganism some weird scary impossible extreme way of life and diet, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Have a look around to learn something new about animal rights and veganism.

Here are definitions of the different levels of vegetarianism/veganism -

Pesco, pollo, and semi vegetarianism.

Pesco-vegetarians eat fish (because they have less sophisticated nervous systems than other animals), Pollo-vegetarians eat chicken (because, well, they just like chicken). The latest fad is the semi-vegetarian, for people who frequently but not systematically avoid meat and dairy. These three forms may represent a healthy diet, but they are not vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination.

Ovo-Lacto vegetarianism.

The most commonly practiced vegetarian diet. Ovo-lacto vegetarians eat eggs and dairy but abstain from meat/fish/poultry.

Lacto-vegetarianism.

Lacto-vegetarians don't eat meat/fish/poultry or eggs, but DO drink milk and eat food where milk is an ingredient.

Ovo-vegetarianism.

These eat eggs but don't drink milk or eat meat/fish/poultry. This is usually on the basis that hens would lay eggs even if we didn't eat them.

Veganism.

Vegans eat no animal products - no meat/poultry/fish, no eggs, no dairy, no honey, etc.
Most ethical vegans also extend veganism to their lifestyle, so refuse to wear leather/fur/silk/wool and avoid products tested on animals.
