The main reason I love Mickey Mouse is the same reason I love Simba from The Lion King; he's cute. Adorable, in fact. It all started by watching House of Mouse. At first I only watched it to see my favourite Disney characters in the audience (o_O), but one day (I believe it was December 28, 2007) the cartoon Mickey's Cabin was playing, and Mickey was reading - well, making up - a story to Pete and his cousin Zeke: "Once upon a time in a cabin in the snow, two cousins who didn't trust each other were trying to steal the bag of money sitting on the floor in front of me. So neither one of them went to sleep, because neither one of them could be trusted. The end." When he said the thing about the bag of money in front of him, I started laughing because he had said something funny in a serious tone of voice - and in his mousey voice too! It was priceless! And I always think it's funny when people do that, anyway. Even though no one was around, I said out loud that Mickey was awesome.
But not simply awesome.
A few days later, on January 2, 2008, I was watching House of Mouse again, the episode called King Larry Swings In. Near the end of the show, Mickey performed a song, a remake of "I Wanna Be Like You" from The Jungle Book, on stage with King Larry. I had never heard Mickey singing before, and I loved his voice! When the song ended, I was giggling and I wished I had the song on mp3 or something so I could listen to it more. And now I was obsessed.
It didn't take long for me to fall deeply and hopelessly in love with Mickey Mouse. During the month of January 2008, I became very obsessed. On January 9, I wrote in my diary, "Lately I have developed a great love for Mickey Mouse, from watching House of Mouse on Toon Disney." On January 15, I watched a bunch of old Mickey Mouse cartoons on YouTube and began to dream of meeting him in person. (That dream became my biggest on January 24.) And on either January 22 or 23, I watched Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers for the first time, and I LOVED it!
However, I still think Mickey and Minnie go together like cookies and milk. In fact, Minkey is my favourite Disney couple! I watch House of Mouse as often as I can. I also love Horace Horsecollar, the mechanical technician at the House of Mouse, because of how he lives in his own little world, but that's another story.
While on a trip to Florida in May 2008, I thought of some more reasons why I love Mickey. I was facing lots of impatience and negativity while traveling, and I kept thinking to myself about how cruel and rushed this world is. I wished Mickey Mouse could come and take me away to Mouseton (the city he lives in) or Disney World for at least a day, as if he were Peter Pan, because he never acts like people do. He doesn't pressure or discourage people, I thought, not even Pluto. He's so optimistic. He has imagination. He's kind. He has a sense of humour. He knows how to have fun. And on top of that, he's adorable! Who could possibly ask for more in a boy?
To this day, I still watch House of Mouse every day I can. And I'm so obsessed that I sometimes used to worry that it might give people the idea that I love Mickey more than I love Simba. But I realized that although I still love Simba a LOT, I'm not as big a fan as I used to be. So, I have slowly changed my mind, and now my favourite Disney character is Mickey Mouse.
