Habitat and Distribution Found only on Iriomote Island, at the southernmost tip of the Ryuku island chain, which is part of the archipelago stretching from Kyushu to Taiwan known as Nansei Shoto. Iriomote island consists predominantly of low mountains (300-400 m) covered with sub-tropical evergreen broadleaved primary forest, including extensive belts of mangrove along waterways. The Nansei Archipelago has a high degree of endemism, and has been termed the “Galapagos of the Orient”. People came to the island only after the second World War, following spraying of DDT by the Americans to eradicate malaria (P. Leyhausen in litt. 1977), and by 1991 numbered around 1,500 (Izawa et. al. 1991). Settlement is concentrated mainly along the coast from the north-west to the south-east, with the center of the island being relatively undisturbed (Barber e t al. 1984, Anon. 1992a). However, the Iriomote cat typically inhabits the low altitude coastal areas of the island alongside the human population, rather than the protected montane area at the island’s center (Izawa et al. 1989).
Mew Mint
This is the bird that Mint was infused with. It is one of the 50 most rarest birds in the world, and it is oh so kawaii! -^^- These birds live mainly in the French Polyoniesian islands, and their habitat is in the forest, even more specific is Subtropical/tropical lowland moist forest and Subtropical/tropical montane moist forest. However, they also survive on Plantations. These birds are endangered because habitat loss and degradation due to agriculture. Also, invasive alien species play a big role in the declining of the spieces. There have been small, weak efforts to save the spieces by relocating them, but that didn't quite work out. There are between 1,500-2,000 left in the world, and the numbers are steadly dropping. We need to help save this beautiful bird! How? i haven't the slightest clue, to be honest ^^' |
Mew lettuce
The Irrawaddy dolphin shares the same range as the finless porpoise, and the two might be confused except for that the Irrawaddy dolphin has a small dorsal fin. This porpoise is found in the coastal waters of the Indian Ocean and western Pacific, from the northern tip of Japan to possibly as far south as the northern coast of Australia. It does not like to swim far from land, and can often be seen swimming in very shallow water. With the exception of the porpoises living in the Yangtze River of China, they tend to avoid contact with boats.
Mew Pudding
The Golden lion tamarin lives primarily in the tropical rain forests of Brazil. They once roamed the vast forest that stretched from the Atlantic coast to the inland mountain range of Serra do Mar. These primates are arboreal and prefer dense, primary forests. They are highly adapted to their environment, which is one of the reasons for concern: fully 99% of the primary forests they need to survive has been cut down for agriculture and housing construction.
Mew Zakuro
The wolf prefers open tundra and forests. Although they once inhabited most of North America, now distribution occurs in only Alaska, Canada, and parts of the U.S.A. Human fear, superstition, and outright hatred of this animal decreased its population drastically and eradicated it from 50% of its former range |
