Fourteen-year-old Usagi Tsukino (Serena) is an ordinary schoolgirl until she is found by a talking cat named Luna. Through Luna, Usagi learns that the world is about to be attacked by a Dark Kingdom that had appeared once before, long ago, and destroyed the kingdom of the moon. Her dormant powers are then awakened to defend the Earth against the coming onslaught, and she is led to a number of friends who join her in the battle.

Usagi fights using the identity of Sailor Moon, and as the story progresses she learns more and more about the enemies which face her and the evil force that is sending them. Gradually she discovers the truth about her own past life, her destined true love, and the possibilities for the future of the Solar System.

The plot spans five major story arcs, each of which is represented in both the manga and the anime, usually under different names. These are the unnamed original arc, the Black Moon arc (Sailor Moon R), the Infinity arc (Sailor Moon S), the Dream arc (Sailor Moon SuperS), and the Stars arc (Sailor Stars).

SAILOR MOON/ SERENA TSUKINO:

The protagonist of the Sailor Moon metaseries as well as its title character, best known by her pseudonym, Sailor Moon. She is the de jure leader of the series' primary heroines, the Sailor Senshi.

Due to the series' widespread popularity in many countries, as well as her distinctive and oft-copied odango hairstyle, she is one of the most immediately recognizable and iconic anime characters worldwide. She is the only character to appear in all 200 episodes of the animea, and is present in all 52 acts of the manga as well as all 51 acts of the live-action series.

Serena, Usagi's given name in the English versions of the series, is derived from "Serenity," the name Usagi went by in her past life. In the English manga she is mostly called by the nickname Bunny, which is the literal meaning of usagi.

SAILOR MERCURY/AMY MIZUNO:  is one of the central characters in the Sailor Moon metaseries. She is best known by the name of Sailor Mercury, one of the series' primary heroines — the Sailor Senshi. Ami is the first member of the Sailor Team to be discovered by Sailor Moon, and serves as the "brains" of the group. She is frequently cited as one of the series' most popular characters, especially among Japanese audiences.  A number of image songs featuring Ami's character have been released.

Rei is identifiable by her long dark hair and the gray-red school uniform she wears. She is a practitioner of Shinto, in particular a miko at the Hikawa Shrine, where she lives, and as such, is seen more often in her miko's garb than her school uniform.

MINAKO(MINA) AINO: is one of the central characters in the Sailor Moon metaseries. She is best known by the name of Sailor Venus, one of the series' primary heroines — the Sailor Senshi.

Minako was first introduced as the protagonist of Naoko Takeuchi's much-shorter manga series, Codename wa Sailor V, of which Sailor Moon is a sequel. In it (and the early part of Sailor Moon), she goes by the pseudonym Sailor V, and is given personal backstory. The plotlines of Sailor V are generally compatible with the newer series, but are usually considered as separate.

RINI(CHIBUSA)/ MINI MOON is one of the central characters in the Sailor Moon metaseries. When she first appears, she is a small child from the 30th century who visits the past to seek help from the series' primary heroines, the Sailor Senshi. She later returns, a few years older, in order to train as a Senshi herself—Sailor Chibi Moon (called Sailor Mini Moon in the English anime). Chibiusa is formally named Usagi "Small Lady" Serenity Tsukino, but she was given her nickname by Mamoru Chiba in order to differentiate from the older Usagi Tsukino.^[3] The nickname is a combination of chibi (meaning runt, dwarf, shrimp) and her given name, Usagi. In her own time period, she is always called Small Lady. In the English-language adaptations, where Usagi had been changed to Serena, the diminutive "Rini" was used for Chibiusa's name.

DARIEN PHILLIPS/SHEILDS: is the primary male protagonist of the Sailor Moon metaseries. He acts as a supporter and ally of the series' central heroines, the Sailor Senshi. Wearing a mask to conceal his identity, he interferes with enemy operations and offers the Senshi advice, sometimes physically aiding them in battle. Mamoru's code name in battles is Tuxedo Kamen, which translates to Tuxedo Mask. Among English-speaking fans, references to him are almost evenly divided between the two titles, with "Tuxedo Mask" slightly outweighing "Tuxedo Kamen." He is best known as her appears in the anime—a mysterious, rose-throwing source of encouragement.
