DANIEL MERSEY

Author of 'Arthur King of the Britons', 'Legendary Warriors', and 'Glutter of Ravens'

Hello!

Thank you for being curious enough to look at my website.

I’ve been writing magazine articles and books since 1996 and have had well over 100 pieces published in this time. Primarily I write about history – specialising in ancient and medieval military history but branching out into other subjects of interest to me. Alongside writing, I’ve design games (traditional ones, not computer games), and also offer editorial services and historical research from time to time. Please flick around the pages on my website to find out more.

Who am I?

Here's the author bio from my Arthur book:

Daniel Mersey was born in 1974 in the aptly named Tintagel House, in Edmonton, north London (although it has to be said that Arthur’s Tintagel is slightly more picturesque, looking out over the sea rather than a railway line). Not only sharing the name of his place of birth with King Arthur, at the age of seven he was forced into playing the famous king at a school fete – largely, he thinks, due to his inability to do the maypole dance. He has been fascinated by the legends and historical potential of Arthur ever since, notably by warfare and society in the Age of Arthur. Maypole dancing has taken a back seat in his life. Daniel read Archaeology at the University of York between 1993 and 1996. The thrilling world of discovering previously unknown treasures in far away lands awaited. Sadly, reality is seldom as exciting as fantasy, and far from a career of self-inflicted Mummies curses and recovering the Lost Ark in the heat of the desert, as an archaeologist he has excavated in such exotic places as Cambridge, Peterborough, Yorkshire, and Wales. Not wishing to make a career of digging muddy holes in freezing cold weather, he is now an editor and writer in a nice warm office, but still takes an active interest in field archaeology. In addition to editing and rewriting other peoples’ work, Daniel has over one hundred writing credits of his own. His previously published work includes Legendary Warriors: Great Heroes In Myth And Reality (Chrysalis, 2002); several historical booklets; a number of contributions to other books; and many magazine and journal articles on subjects as diverse as medieval military history, ancient henge monuments, medieval Burma, the different types of football supporters you might come across in a pub, and medical ethics. Off the written page and onto the airwaves, Daniel has also written comedy for radio. He is also a Contributing Editor to the Castles of Wales website, and has undertaken work for several museums, cataloguing archived material, assessing displays and access, and providing explanatory text. Daniel currently lives on the south coast of England, a stone’s throw from a stony beach. When not writing, he watches his football team slide to glorious defeat, and plays guitar (badly but loudly).
