Arthur Brindle

Arthur is not a name that will be on everybodys lips in the Merseybeat scene, but he was important in my career as a drummer. He was the one who dared me to take the stage for the first time and play drums with the group who were performing at our Polio Christmas party. I went on to do what I did - I also helped him learn to play drums years later.

Even with the disability he had he was a competant drummer, but never had the chance to play in a Group, mainly due to the fact that he like me had polio, and he had calipers on both legs, also he had the use of only one arm. He played the drums with two sticks in one hand, a trick I used to do, but he adapted it to an art form.

Arthur was an international Table Tennis player, he was a qualified coach and taught many youngsters on Merseyside, mostly able bodied. He many went on to County and International honours, carrying Arthurs Flag. Arthur and I shared a flat in London for a while and we took London by storm. The are many stories about the exploits of our time in London, we had a Ball. Sadly Arthur has gone and we won't hear his booming voice, he will be missed by many friends in more ways than one. If you had a problem Arthur would be there for you. With our different paths in life, we didn't get the chance to hang out together as much as we would have liked, but were always there for each other. I  miss a true friend.

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool Tales from the Mersey Mouth

Liverpool, the city that gave to the world the Beatles, wit and football excellence provides the inspiration for these pages.

There is a long history of Irish, Scots, Welsh, Jewish, African and Asian immigrants who came here for diverse reasons. Indeed, the Liverpool Chinese community is the oldest in Europe.

The names of two of the Beatles, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, are reflections of the influx into this city of the Irish famine survivors. In fact, the strength of the Liverpool Irish population has led to our city being nicknamed the capital of Ireland. Our cosmopolitan nature is reflected in the mosques, temples and synagogues that can be found here but we are, in the main, Catholics and Protestants.

Although Liverpool is no longer the world's major sea port we Scousers still wear the jeans that were made popular by the transatlantic sailors of the fifties, plying their trade from a town that was still reeling from the assaults of Hitler's Luftwaffe. Ironically, Hitler's brother actually lived here before the second world war!

Our passion is football, and we have two soccer teams, Liverpool football club and Everton football club.

We also have two cathedrals, the Metropolitan and the Anglican, one for each of the Catholic and Protestant traditions, as well as one of the oldest synagogues in England and the country's oldest Mosque, which was inaugurated in 1889.

Liverpool has known its share of tragedy. In the year 1900 three cities led the world league for infant mortality, Dublin, Liverpool and Calcutta, in that order! For our many immigrants the long and winding road ended at a workhouse for the indigent, or a mass grave for the victims of cholera and Scarlet fever.

During the blitz of 1941, when the Luftwaffe pounded the town nightly, as it was the key to the western approaches of the Atlantic, thousands died. In the Atlantic itself the German U-Boats accounted for countless locally born seamen, including my uncle, my namesake, whom I never knew. In the words of locally born writer Nicholas Monserrat,

"The sea was in our blood, and our blood was in the sea, and that's enough about those five martial years, which made a man out of me and a corpse out of my brother."

Twenty five years later four Liverpool lads would sing 'Give peace a chance' because they knew instinctively that all we need is love. The Beatle song, 'Places I remember' reflects their love of the city.(slight correction from this excelent article, the Beatles did not record give peace a chance, it was recorded after the Beatles split, by John Lennon ,yoko, & a bunch of hare krishna freaks in a hotel bedroom, tim leary, petula clarke & others were present too.)

This site, I hope, mirrors my own personal love of the town, whose vitality prompted Carl Gustav Jung to call it 'the pool of life'.

Somebody else said 'see Naples and die, see Liverpool and live!' Amen to that, and Amen to Liverpool's resurgence in the 21st century. In the words of our beloved sons,

"Let it be!"
