MURDER OF LENNON WAS PUBLICITY STUNT

John Lennon's murderer Mark David Chapman told a parole board that he killed the legendary Beatle to "steal" his fame. Chapman(the Bast**d), who was denied parole earlier this month, told the hearing that his crime made him "a bigger nobody than I was before".

According to a transcript of the hearing, released last night, Chapman never apologised to the panel for gunning Lennon down.

But he said he deserved to be in jail because of the "pain and suffering" he had caused. Chapman recounted the moment he fired five bullets at Lennon outside his New York home. He said,"I committed this act for attention to, in a sense, steal John Lennon's fame and put it on myself, thinking I was a nobody at the time".

THE JET HAS LANDED

this update 15th August 2004

A celebration night at the Arnos Manor Hotel in Bristol honoured Jet Harris on reaching 65 years young and collecting his pension book. Although the Shadows tour went ahead without him, many fans would have cherished the memory of jet on the groups final tour, writes Steve Kramer. A thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable evening had the 'Governor', playing two sets. The first was backed by the,' Midnight Shadows', after a short break , ' The Bruvvers', took to the floor. Towards the end of their act, the former 'Shadow', joined the lads to complete the second set. Jet's lovely wife  Janet made sure his very special day would not be forgotten, by having a star named after him. A star for a true star : Happy Birthday Jet, best wishes from Brian (merseybeatlover1) & Kath.

BEEGEES

The BeeGees,.... I'm the first to say that I hated the high voiced barry in the 80's...ie, 'Night Fever', etc, but the early music of the beegees in the 60's was bloody fantastic, though early on ,they did try to copy a rather well known band...I think they were called the BEATLES !, if you like the beegees, look out for a 'cheap CD, of their early years, you will not be dissapointed.

TELL ME A STORY

Sandy Newman of...'MARMALADE' told me it was odd performing ,'The Storybook, at Arley Hall, Cheshire with his group , Dave Berry, Chip Hawkes, and Dave Dee.   I asked him why and he said it was because they were sandwiched between two orchestral slots. The audience was very reactiive to the 60's artists' performances, probably  thinking it was light relief from the soaring sounds of  a big orchestra....     (article by David Parker... the Beat magazine ..see links on home page

A Ray of sunshine fades out

With the death of Ray Charles last month (june 2004) aged 73, rhythm a and blues has lost it's soul & an inspiration.

Ray lost his sight when he was six and became an orphan at 15. , but that did not stop him becoming one of the most influential music stars of the generation from blues to jazz, through rock 'n' roll, to gospel. We will remember 'Georgia On My Mind' as his classic hit, originally made famous by, Hoagy Carmichael. Rays other worldwide hit was 'I Can't Stop Loving You'. He formed a group when he was about 20 and played piano and also sax in it before discovering his own singing ability. His smile and his evident emotion  was part of his charismatic performance.

He had a long-running drug problem but suffered complications from a more recent hip operation. However his musical influence remains.

I hope you enjoy your visit to this site. Their are plenty of great sixties websites around so why this one?

Well this site is my thoughts and feelings of Liverpool's Mersey beat era. ..(with a bit of my funny bits in)..though I mean them ..(look at monthly moan!)...

MATHEW STREET

Mathew street is one of the most famous streets in the world , where the Cavern Club was , and still is today. Although the Cavern was partly demolished , it was rebuilt , and now gives visitors a chance to 'Feel what it was like' back in those fab 60's years. Across from the Cavern Club, is the Cavern Pub , a pub that has many articles and pictures relating to Mersey Beat. Outside the Cavern pub is a statue of John Lennon & a wall full of acts that played at the Cavern Club, each act are on individual bricks.

In mathew street , you will find the Grapes pub , Very famous for the mersey beat acts of the sixties including the Beatles who had a drink or three , (John lennon was barred from the Grapes for putting wet beer mats on the ceiling and waiting gleefully for the beer mats to dry-out and fall on customers. When the Beatles were banned from the Grapes , they would go round the corner to the 'White Star' pub.
