Welcome to Luang Prabang the King Town and the old capital City of the Lane Xang Kingdom

During your visit to Luang Prabang you can experience both culture and nature: For an outdoors experience, you can go to the Khuangsi waterfall, Sae waterfall, go kayakking on the Mekong Nam Ou and Nam Khan River, and go hiking or climbing in nearby mountains. 

For a cultural experience you can learn about art, culture, and the way of life for Lao people. In Luang Prabang you can visit Xientong Temple, Visun Temple, the National Museum, the Lao textile villages of Ban Phanom, and Ban Xienglex.  Across the Mekong River you can visit Ban Jan, where locals produce jars and vases using traditional methods. 

If you are looking for a panoramic view of the city and a romantic sunset over the Mekong River, climb the 228 steps to the top of Phousi Mountain.  It is well worth the climb!  After that browse the night market and indulge home traditional Lao handicrafts for family and friends.

How do you get to Luangprabang ?

You can get to Luangprabang by airplane, boat or bus.  There are very good highways crossing from the north to south, and east to west.  If you are looking for more adventure, you can take a slow boat or speed boat from North Thailand to Luangprabang. This journey is guaranteed to provide you with unforgettable memories.

 

What can I do in Luang Prabang?

 

  1. Sight Seeing:

 

+   Xieng Ton Temple,

 

+   National Museum, ( King Palace )

+   Phousi Temple is the view point. It is very nice to go on the top. It can make you lucky and give you unforgot table event like: View around the town, Sunset, Sunrise, Princes and prince-mountain in the North site and Elephant mountain in the East site.

+   Visun Temple

 

+   There are also many Lao style houses and ca. 33 Temples around Luang Prabang town.

+   Buddha cave,

 

+   Khouang Si Water fall,

+   Sae Water fall. It is very beauty in August to February.

 

  1. Shopping

There are four important markets:

+   Mong and Night market,

+   Naviengkham market,

+   Phosi market,

+   Chinese market

+   Dara market is close for construction

+   Lao Textile will be in Phanom, and Xangkhong Villagese. It is good if you ask about the silk or mixing silk and cotton.

+   Antique Shop will be Patana Boubpha in Visun Village.

+   Silver Shop will be near the fountain

+   Gold shop is near the Dara market.

 

  1. Festival

You should go and take part these Festivals.

 

-   Mong new year in the beginning of February

-   Khmu new year in the beginning of February

-   Lao new year on 13-14-15 or also 16 April. On the first day ca. at 6.00AM-11.00AM it is flow market ca. 1km a long the street. In the afternoon there are many people at the sand bank ( Donesai moungkun ) opposite of Luang Prabang town at the Mekong River. The people make sand stupa, basi ceremony, rocket festival, Drinking and Dancing like Lao style. On 14-Appril it start new year parade ca.1PM from Wat That to Xiengthong temple. On 15-April it start new year parade ca 1.00PM back from Xieng Tong temple to Wat That temple( fountain )

-         Boon Khaophansa is the Buddhist festival at the full moon day in July. Thousand of people are sitting at the street for this day around 6.00AM to give food, sweet…to the monk. That is tradition of Luang Prabang. From this day three Month every full moon or new moon the people do the same event. This year it is on 10-7-2006. It is Boon Khao Padabdinh 45 day later. It is new moon and also Boat Racing festival. This year it is on 23-August 2006. 15 Days later on 7-9-2006 it is Boon khaosalak ( full moon ).

-         30 Days later on 7-10-2006 it is Boon Okphansa.

-         ON 8-10-2006 Boon lai Houa Fai (fire Boat Festival). The people make there fire Boat and than there is Houa Fai parade (fire boat parade) to Xieng Tong temple by the River and let it flow down on the Mekong River.

The 2007 Lao Ecotourism Forum, organized by the Lao National Tourism Administration, will bring together and display the highest quality and most innovative ecotourism products and services on offer in the Mekong Region, Under the theme “ Bridging the Mekong Region ”  tour operators, travel agents, accommodation providers, development agencies, government authorities and indigenous communities from throughout the Mekong Region will gather under the same roof to network and expand ecotourism opportunities in their respective countries. This event is a must for anyone interested in shaping the course of ecotourism development in Mekong Region.

 

Objectives of the Forum

1.         To promote high quality ecotourism-related products and services that showcase the natural and cultural heritage of Laos and the Mekong Region,

2.         Increase business opportunities and networking between ecotourism providers and consumers, with an aim to increase knowledge of the Mekong Region around the world,

3.         To facilitate discussion and an exchange of ideas about the successes and potential for developing ecotourism programs that support poverty alleviation and the protection of the natural and cultural heritage in the Mekong Region.
