Merrill Middle School Honor Level Program

SCHOOL IS MORE THAN ACADEMICS

The HONOR LEVEL DISCIPLINE PROGRAM:

q     Assists in promoting a positive and safe learning environment.

q     Recognizes students who comply with the behavioral expectations and gives progressive consequences to those who do not comply.

Behavior Expectations: - Each expectation is assigned a point value.  Students accumulate points when they fail to meet a behavioral expectation.

1 Point Expectations:

q     Be on task during class

q     Arrive to school & class on time

q     Bring instrument/gym uniform to class

q     Return signed forms/slips on time

q     Follow school and classroom rules

q     Clean up after yourself

q     Return media materials on time

q     Follow lunchroom rules

3 Point Expectations:

q     Bring all needed materials to class

q     Be a respectful spectator

q     Do your own work (no copying/plagiarism)

q     Follow bus regulations

5 Point Expectations:

q          Follow the directions of adults

q          Respect personal & school property

q          Respect the rights of students to learn & teachers to teach

q          Serve assigned detentions

q          Settle conflict in a peaceful manner

q          Treat adults and students with respect

q          Use appropriate verbal & body language

Students are given zero point infractions for not completing an assignment on time.  Students are NOT assigned points, but must serve a ½ noon detention for not completing their assignment in a timely manner.  The detention time can be used to complete the missing assignment.

All one-point infractions earn a ½ noon detention.  The students may use the time to work on any class assignment.

A progressive system of consequences is used when students earn three or five point infractions:

o       1st infraction: ½ noon detention

o       2nd infraction: Full noon detention

o       3rd infraction: 15 minute p.m. detention

o       4th infraction: 30 minute p.m. detention

o       5th infraction: 2 days In-School-Suspension (1 day off for completed work and good behavior)

o       6th infraction: Administrative action

On a daily basis a computer program examines the previous 14 calendar days for each student to determine how many points he/she has accumulated.  The points earned then determine the Honor Level for each student based on the following criteria:

q      0 pts                        Honor Level 1

q      1-10 pts          Honor Level 2

q      11-20 pts                  Honor Level 3

q      21+ pts                    Honor Level 4

Students on Honor Level 1 & 2 are entitled to all privileges of being a student at Merrill Middle School and are not limited in attendance or participation in any school related function.

A student can quickly earn his/her way back to a lower Honor Level every 14 days by following expectations.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?

Physical aggression, removal from a classroom or student behavior that violates OASD Policy, city ordinances, and state statutes is not part of the Honor Level Program.  The consequences for such behavior may include arrest, suspension, and/or pre-expulsion and could immediately place a student on Honor Level 3 or 4.
