Harry Potter: An Obsession

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix

Director: David Yates
Screenplay: Micheal Goldenberg
Composer: Patrick Doyle (?)

Review: The first time I saw OOP, I was severly disappointed. I was angry. One of my favourite scenes, a scene I thought to be important, was cut.  The scene where Harry and Dumbledore talk in Dumbledore's office. I know, I know they had about five minutes of it but they scrapped all emotion.  In fact, I was disappointed about how little emotion was in this movie.  Sure, they included some at a few 'crucial' points but it comparison to the book.
I also was not impressed with the Department of Ministry scene. More particularily, Sirius' death.  I imagined completelty differently... and was I wrong to? It's described differently in the book.

I know many people loved Yates' version of Harry Potter.  I personally, did not.  I'm also aware that the movies are also made differently to make it easier to understand for 'movie fans.'

Still, I can't help but be disappointed. Because when I finished DH, I was hit was a wave of sadness. Harry Potter was, is, done for me.  Sure, there will be movies but they are no longer something I look forward to.  Because every time I look forward to them, they just disappoint.  The last Potter excitement I will have is the theme park. And that, I know, I will be going to.

I know many of you probably diagree with me, and that is fine.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I respect that.  I've been known to love movies that are critally hated, and hate movies that the whole world seems to love.  So this is just my, perhaps messed-up, opinion.

Goblet of Fire

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Director: Mike Newell
Screenplay: Steve Kloves
Composer: Patrick Doyle

Review: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was definately an interesting movie! I saw it opening night, the next day and then again, a week later.

Although it does leave a lot out of the story, I was pleasently surprise that I didn't mind that much.  I loved basicalyl every minute of it.  I was, though, very disappointed that the took out the Durlseys and the action of the Quidditch Match.  That was disappointing.  I had also imagined the maze scene a lot differently, and didn't like how they took out all the obstacles.  Now, I know many people  loved this scene, but I personally felt the whole bathroom scene with Moaning Myrtle was just unneccesary.

One word of warning- I am severely clausterphobic, and the first few times I saw the maze scene when the walls closed in, I completely freaked out.

GOF is a lot darker then the previous movies (hence it's PG-13 rating)

Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Director: Alfonso Cuaron
Screenplay: Steve Kloves
Composer: John Williams

Review: When I first saw POA in theaters, I have to admit I was really disappointed.  The first two had been so detailed that the third one just didn't measure up. In fact, I complaied about it for an entire day after watching it.  I felt that Alfonso seriously changed the whole feel of the movies, and I didn't like that.  By now, though, I've started to get used to it, and can actually watch and enjoy it now.

I personally enjoyed the time turner scenes, I felt they were done very well, and the Knight Bus scene (who doesn't). Although I could've done without the random, annoying shrunken heads that decided to take a starring role in this movie.

This movie, although not detailed, at least brings some humour into it.  However, for me, it seemed very short and I was not happy at all that Cedric and Cho were both cut and that Quidditch was cut down to almost nothing.

Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Director: Chris Columbus
Screenplay: Steve Kloves
Composer: John Williams

Review: Although it left some details out, it stuck pretty closely to the story.  Although the chamber wasn't exactly how I imagined, nor was Moaning Myrtle, it was still pretty close.

Philosopher Stone

Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone
Also known as: Sorceror's Stone

Director: Chris Columbus
Screenplay: Steve Kloves
Composer: Chris Columbus

Review: I must say after recently re-watching the five movies that are currently available, I do miss the Chris Columbus days. Philosopher Stone is by far one of my favourite movies (although not my favourite book) if only because I feel it captures the wonderment and magic that makes the books so appealing. Anyone who follows my website knows that I have a certain disliking towards the newer movies. They are darker and stray way too far from the books. I understand that the books get darker, but the movies are just lacking. Philopsher Stone embodies what I used to love aout the movies. The compete-ness of the world. The props, the costume, everything is just perfect...
