Memorial Inscriptions taken from Upton St. Leonard Churchyard, Upton St. Leonard, Gloucester.

These inscriptions were transcribed as accurately as possible from volunteers.  Please do not sell or advertise this information.  This is purely to help in family history research.

1.  (This grave stone is in poor condition and no longer standing.  Although the  wording was quite clear).        In Loving Rememberance of - Edward Hamilton - Younger Son of - Charles and Mary Armstrong - and Grandson of - Richard Taylor - late of Norton in this County.  - Who died at the Monor House - In This Parish - September 15th 1864 (or 1884) - Aged 13 Years.  Also of William Henry - Second Son of the Above Charles and Mary Armstrong - Who was drowned from - The Sir Henry Lawrence - on his Homeward Voyage - From Galcutta - January 27th 1867 (or 1887) - Aged 16 Years.  "There shall be one (unreadable word) and one Shepherd).

2.  Maud Ancrum - Died August 30th 1874 - Aged 17 Years.  Also - William Rutherford Ancrum - of St. Leonards Court - Died October 9th 1898 - Aged 82 Years.  Also Ethel Georgiana - Wife of Major M. A. Cameron CMC - and Daughter of W.R. Ancrum - Died September 10th 1903 - Aged 36.  Also Sydney Rutherford Ancrum - Son Of - Wiliam Rutherford Ancrum - of St. Leonards Court - Died May 15th 1906 - Aged 45 Years.  Also Arthur Rutherford Ancrum - Lieutenant Royal Engineers - Died at (not quite sure is this is the correct spelling) Prshibur India - July 7th 1879 - Aged 24 Years.  Also Emily Anne - Widow of - William Rutherford Ancrum - Of St. Leonards Court - Died August 28th 1916 - Aged 86 Years.  Also William Rutherford Ancrum - Of St. Leonards Court - Son of - William Rutherford Ancrum - Died Pril 1?th 19?? - Aged 68 Years.

3.  John - Youngest Son of the Late - William Archer - Of This Parish - Who Died March 17th 1884 - Aged 28 Years. "We know not what shall (unreadable word) on the morrow".  Also Jane - Wife of the late - William Archer - Who Died July 15th 1889 - Aged 79 Years.  "To be with Christ which is far better".  Also Mary Elizabeth Coates - Daughter of the above - Who Died April 12th 1910 - Aged 56 Years.  "Nearer My God to Thee".

4.  In Memory of - John Arelly or Abelly - Yeoman of this Parish - Who died July 3rd 18?? - Aged 58 Years.  Also of Sarah (unreadable) - Who died December (unreadable) - Aged 5? Years.

5.  In loving memory of - Emily Dearman Birchall - Born 19th July 1852 - Departed this life 2nd Sept 1884 - Called by God she went to God.  Also in memory of - JN Dearman Birchall - Born 6th Aug 1828 - Departed this life 11th June 1897 - With christ which is far better.   Sept 26th 1875 - Jan 6th 1941 - John Dearman Birchall - ?? of Cotswold Farm, Cirencester. - Beloved husband of Adela.  In loving memory of Adela Emily Birchall - 29th June 1877 - 12th Nov 1965

7.  Treasured memories of - My dearly beloved son - Ivor Frank Brookes - who fell asleep - Feb 26th 1943 - aged 27 years - His end was peace.  Also Sarah Jane Brookes - died 29th Oct 1951 - aged 21 years - and her sister - Florence B. Walker - died 2nd Mar 1963 - aged 76 years - At Rest.

8.  In loving memory of - Henry Bryan - who died Dec 19th 1889 - aged 71 years.  Also of Esther Bryan - wife of the above - who died Jan 11th 1887 - aged 73 years - Rejoicing in Hope.

9.  A Tribute of love - To My Devoted Wife - Clara Mary Browning - Passed away June 4th 1948 - Aged 70 Years. "Faithfull unto death".  Also of Walter B.V. Browning - Husband of above - Passed Away April 8th 1957 - Aged 80 Years. 

10.  In loving Memory of - My Dear Husband - Thomas Henry Barnard - Who Died August 25th 1929 (or 1979) - Aged 63 years "Peace Perfect Peace"

11.  In Loving Memory of - Edwin Burton DCM Capt (Late 3rd Dragon Guards and DH Yeo) - Passed Over November 2nd 1943 - Aged 81 Years.  "Death is the Gate to Life".  Also his Wife - Hannah Elizabeth - Passed Over - March 9th 1945 - Aged 82 Years.

18.  Captain Robert Cecil Brooke-Hunt - Royal Air Force - 23rd May 1899 - 26th May 1923. "The Peace of God Which Passeth All Understanding".  Lt. Colonel Robert Henry Brooke-Hunt - 72nd Seaforth Highlanders - H.M. Bodyguard - 26th January 1846 - 1st July 193?.  Mary Beatrice - Wife of Col Robert H. Brooke-Hunt - 8th April 1867 - 3rd April 1932.

1.  Here Lieth The Body of - Thomas Davis - Of This Parish - Yeoman - Who Departed This Life - January the 7 1709 - Aged 71.  (The remainder of the inscription is unreadable)

2.  There is quite a lot of inscription on the following grave but unfortunatley  most of this is unreadable.  Lady Downe - Founder of the Village School - 1847 - Benefactress to the Parish.  Louisa Maria - Widow of John Christopher (unreadable word) Downay - 3rd Viscount (unreadable)

3.  In Memory of - James Davis - Of this Parish Cornwainer - Who died January 20th 1870 - Aged 82 Years.  Also Sarah his wife - Who died October 22nd 1863 - Aged 82 Years.  Also of several of their children resting in hope of glorious resurrection.

1.  Susanna - Wife of George Eshelby - Died January 14th 1893 - aged 50 years - Jesus stood on the shore's - St. John 21 v4.

2.  Isabella Eshelby - Born October 3rd 1834 - Died October 11th 1868 "They that fear me shall be mine saith the lord of hosts in that day when I make up my jenirls (following two words unreadable) - Also Mary Eshelby - Sister of the above -Died June 13th 1880 - Aged 27 years "Thou in faithfulness (following words unreadable)".  Also Sarah I Eshelby - Died at Cincinnati USA 1889 - Aged 57 Years.

3.  Francis George - son of F.C. and M. Eshelby - Died January 30th 1893 - Aged 20 months.  Thomas - son of George and Mary Eshelby, deceased December 14th 1852 - Aged 5 years and 11 months - (The following lines unreadable)

3.  Underneath this Tomb - Lies the Remains of - William Frankis - Gent of the Parsonage of this Parish - He Departs This Life - April 29th 1816 - Aged 41 Years.  Also of - William Only Son of the Said William Frankis - Of The Parsonage - Who Died February (unreadable date) 1812 - Aged 39 Years - Also of Eliza Anne - Daughter of Richard John Bridges - Of Bristol Solicitors - Who Died February 9th 1829 - Aged (unreadable) Years.  (Please note that the dates above 1816 and 1812 are correct)

4.  Sacred to the Memory of - Mr. Thomas Frankis - Yeoman - of Spoonbed in the Parish of Painswick - He Departed This Life - July 26th 1804 - In the 67 Year of his Age.  "Farewell Want World I've Seen Enough Of Thee and Now Am Careless of What Thou Sayest of me.  Thy Smile I Count Not Nor Thy Frowns I Fear.  My Cares Are Past, My Head Lies Quiet Here.  What Fault You Saw In Me Take Care To (unreadable word) and Look At Home - Enough There's To Be Done".

5.  To The Memory Of - Henry Frankis - November 22nd 1806 - Aged 64 Years.  Also (Unreadable word) Frankis (The remainder of the inscription is unreadable)

6.  To The Memory Of - Mr. Richard Frankis - Of This Parish - Yeoman - Who Departed This Life - November 19th 1800 - In The 64 Year Of His Age.  Also Jos(unreadable second part of name) - The Son of Richard Frankis - By Ann His Wife - He Died in the (unreadable word) Indies - September 17th (unreadable date) - In the 21st Year of his Age.  Also Underneath this Tomb are interred the remains of - Ann Wife of Mr. Richard Frankis - Who Departed This Life - July 4th 1837 - In the 88th Year of her Age.  "In Life Beloved, In Death Lamented".

7.  In Affectionate Rememberance of - Frederick French - Of Stroud - Who Departed This Life - May 1st 1862 - Aged ?6 Years.  "The Lord will Lighten my Salvation Whom Shall I Fear The Lord is the Strength of my Life of whom shall I be Afraid so he giveth his beloved sleep."

8.  Sacred to the Memory of - Matilda - Widow of Frederick French - Late of Stroud, Gloucestershire - Who Departed This Life - September 2? 1866 - Aged 49 Years.  "So Teach us to uncumber our ways that we may (unreadable word) our hearts unto wisdom".

1.  Sacred to the memory of - William Gardner - who died November 16th 1899 - aged 85 years.  Also of Sarah, his wife - who died March 12th 1902 - aged 90 years.  Be thoughtful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life.

2.  In loving memory of - Ann Gardner - who died February 11th 1928 - aged 91 years.  I know that my redeemer liveth.

3.  In loving memory of - Henry George Gardner - (next line unreadable) - aged 6? years.  Also of Elizabeth -(the next 8 lines unreadable)

4.  In Loving Memory - Of Our Dear Son - Harold Sidney Gosling - Died March 27th 1937 - Aged 32 Years.  "The Lord Knoweth Them"  Also His Parents - Ernest Gosling - Died May 2nd 1966 - Aged 84 Years and Elizabeth Gosling - Died December 14th 1966 - Aged 85 Years

1.  Loving memory of Thomas Marden - who died June 27th 1913 - aged ?6 years.  Also of Mary Ellen Marden - His beloved wife - who died October 23rd ???? aged ?? years.  "Until the day dawns".

4.  In Memory of - Dinah Ann, Widow of Thomas Morris - who departed this life - January 12th 1869 - Aged 81 years. Also In Memory of Thomas Morris - of this parish - Who departed this life - ? April ???? - In the 78th Year of his Life.  "Them also which sleep in Jesus will god bring with him"

5.  A Rememberance of - Samuel Milton - Of this parish - Who Died March 25th 1877 - Aged 63 Years.  Also of - Maria his wife - Who Died August 31st 1871 - Aged 53 Years.  Also of - Catherine - Only Daughter of the above - Who died August 25th 1881 - Aged 33 Years.
