WELCOME TO THE
MEGO DOCTOR WHO MUSEUM

In the beginning...
In 1976, the original Doctor Who "Mego" line
made it's debut as exclusives for Great Britain from Denys Fisher with
six pieces- the Fourth Doctor, Leela, The TARDIS, the Giant Robot, a
Dalek, and a Cyberman. K-9 (with friction drive) was added to the
line later in 1978.
The December 1982 issue of Doctor Who
monthly, issue #71, had a guide to Doctor Who merchandise, and
said by that time the set of seven was "only then disappearing
from the shelves, though the figures of Tom Baker and Leela had been
scarce for some time previous."
The doll of the "Doctor" was
sold by itself in Italy through "Harberts" and the boxes from there
bare Italian writing on the package.
A surprise "warehouse find"
of the Harberts dolls was found in the 90's, making the Doctor doll
more plentiful and easier to find than the other characters.
Bearing
the same 9" bodies Mego had also previously used with their "Flash
Gordon" line, the "Doctor Who" dolls are highly sought after
collectables today and can command a hefty price tag.
UNMADE MEGO- LOST IN TIME

Mego expert John Bonavita, author
of "Mego Action Figures and Toys", has discovered the Master and Davros
were planned to be made at one point by their mention in a UK Mego
catalog. Various rumors have also told me that a Zygon and Harry
Sullivan were also in the works as additions to the line, and that
production photographs of the prototypes allegedly exist, but this has
never been substantiated. If anyone has any information on this or
pictures, please contact me with what you know!
The "Doctor
Who" line was by all accounts considered a success so it still remains
unclear today why it didn't continue on. Mego didn't enter their
financial woes, excellently chronicled in John Bonavita's book, for
years later. Travel on to the "Mego Doctor Who Doll Gallery" and lay
your eyes on some of the nicest and most sought after Doctor Who
products ever created!
