Of course, Liz’s date turns out to be a drunken cad. Don’t they all pale in comparison to his pastiness anyway? (Ok, according to the letters, Mason wasn’t "drunk", he passed out thanks to a bad combo of wine and heart meds. Of course, people who don't read the letters wouldn't know that, which is why Lynn put it in there instead of the strip.)
