The Medieval and Early Gardener

The Medieval, Tudor and Historic Gardener

Welcome to the Medieval, Tudor and Historic Gardener Web Site. Here you can discover contemporary gardening techniques and the tools that were used.

I have spent the last twenty years researching early gardening methods and the use of plants, especially during the Medieval to Stuart periods.

My name is Michael Brown, MA. LCGI.  I researched, designed and created the largest authentic medieval garden in Europe at the Prebendal Manor, Nassington, Northamptonshire, UK.

The garden is included in 'The Good Garden Guide'. It has also been featured on BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour, and Alan Titchmarsh's television programme, 'Royal Gardeners'. In his book of the same name Alan said that,

'Prebendal Manor is a stunning example of a reconstructed medieval garden.'

Alan borrowed my tools to make a Tudor garden plot at Hampton Court, although this was never shown on television.
