Equine chiropractic care is a manual therapy that focuses on the biomechanical dysfunction of the spine and its effect on the entire nervous system throughout the body. Chiropractic treatment does not replace traditional veterinary medicine; however, it can provide an additional means of diagnosis and treatment options for spinal problems as well as biomechanically related musculoskeletal disorders. Concurrent with veterinary treatment, equine chiropractic care is helpful and complementary to specific problems and can often eliminate the source of acute or chronic pain syndromes.
There
are numerous common, stressful or traumatic situations that can cause
abnormal or restricted movement to occur in the spine or extremities.
This change in proper movement of the spine is what chiropractors call
a "vertebral subluxation complex" or VSC. When a VSC occurs, the
horse's spine loses its normal flexibility, resulting in stiffness,
which further leads to resistance and decreased performance. The most
common symptom associated with a VSC is pain, which can manifest in a
variety of ways. Horses in pain will show compensatory changes in
posture and gait. These changes can cause stress in other joints and
muscles.
