New virus types and variants are discovered every day or so and perfect protection is probably impossible. Well anyway virus threat exists and some form of antivirus protection is needed, be it paid or free. Antivir, BitDefender, AVG, Avast are considered best and give best detection rate among freeware antivirus programs. AOL has one the best free antivirus tools at the moment. It's name is Active Virus Shield and is a tool based on Kaspersky antivirus software. Beside on demand scanner it also has file antivirus which scans files when accessed and prevents viruses from activating even if they are already inside of your computer. And also email virus scan. Also, it is possible to scan only selected folders which you suspect may have a virus or other malware. All in all, an excellent tool. AntiVir is software made by German programmers and it has highest virus detection rate and its personal edition is free for private and individual use. It can detect and remove more than 50 000 viruses. There is also resident scanner called Virus Guard which can be disabled if you wish, and internet update wizard to obtain updates free of charge. Support can be obtained on their message board. It's somewhere about 6.5 Mb so it's not a big problem to download even for those with dial-up connection, it's 20 minutes or so. BitDefender had some pretty good results too. It's free version is without resident protection but does excellent job when scanning. Really nice and clean interface, adjustable. There's possibility to turn off archives scanning for example which can slightly speed up scanning, you can choose extension of the files to scan etc. AVG antivirus free edition is another free antivirus program. At the bottom of their page is download link. It's only 5 Mb in size. It has resident scanner and also e-mail scanner and automatic update feature. It has good detection rate. Avast is free for home, noncommercial use. You can download it and use it for 60 days as a demo and then you need to register to obtain free license key from the manufacturer. Avast features simple user interface, resident antivirus protection and automatic updates. |
