FREE ANTI SPYWARE PROGRAMS, TOOLS AND UTILITIESMost antivirus programs do not take care of spyware and adware stuff, or at least they don't get rid of it completely. It may be best to use programs designed just for the purpose of cleaning your computer from such nasties. So these programs will work best if you have some of the antivirus programs already installed, whether free or not. Here are programs considered to be the best in the category of free antispyware tools. Spybot is a program which, together with Adaware, gives some protection against spyware. It may be the best to have them both installed because sometimes one can detect something the other one doesn't and combination of two of them is a pretty good one. If you spend a lot of time on the internet, to have both of them is a must. You can read an interview with the Spybot creator Patrick Kolla. Ad-Aware works similar to spybot but is also different. Of course each one uses its own, different engine and so can produce slightly different results sometimes. Both of them have scan on demand feature and can be set as you like it. Both of them can also remove spyware and other malware. If you suspect that you have something on your computer but none of those two tools detected anything you can try and see if Bazooka can find it. Bazooka detects spyware, adware, trojan, keylogger and all other malware not detected by most antivirus programs. It scans your system and tells you what it finds if there is anything. Then, removal instructions will be given to you because the program itself doesn't remove anything, it only scans and detects. Whether to remove something or not is on you to decide. Some registry editing and manual file deletion may be needed but you should not make changes to the registry or delete something if you're not sure. As is the case with spybot and adaware, it can also detect things other tools missed and it's free. Another tool closely associated with this category is HijackThis. Simply said this tool is widespread that much so you can't make a good list without it. Very small but effective, HijackThis is irreplaceable addition to the programs mentioned above. Your knowledge is required if and when it finds something. HijackThis scans your system and will give you option to delete some files. It doesn't know if something on your computer is needed or not, you must decide whether to remove something and so this tool is for advanced users only. |
