Middle East Now at The British Museum
by Omar Al Zo'bi

After being introduced by Ohoud to a great calligrapher called Hassan Massoudy, one thing lead to another where I ended in The British Museum website on a season titled Middle East Now. I was extremely ecstatic to know it’s been held 30 mins away from Uxbridge.

The season has started off in May 18th, and will end around September the 3rd 2006. The season will hold many events that focus on the existing works of modern Arabic & Persian artists such as Shafic Abboud, Madiha Omar, Salah Faisal Al-Ali, Farid Belkahia, Mahmoud Hamadani, Ahmed Mater Al-Ziad, Sabah Naim, Walid Raad, Golnaz Fathi,
Mohammed Ehsai, Wasma`a Chorbachi, Abdul Qadir Al-Raes, Laila Shawa, Hassan Massoudy and many others.

Events in this season will include:

Word into Art: Artists of the Modern Middle East.
  18th of May – 3rd of September 2006.
As the title states, the collection of art featured will include the moulding of words,
letters and phrases into pieces of artworks. Whether referenced to personal quotes,
famous ones of Arab poets or even common sayings. The event is based on the beauty of the Arabic letters. This makes you reconsider your handwriting afterwards!

  Women and Words
  15th of June, 2006
Chaired by British novelist Maggie Gee, with editor of Transit Beirut, Malu Halasa,
and editor of Qissas, Jo Glanville. Readings from Palestinian novelist Adania Shibli and Lebanese Palestinian novelist Zeina B Ghandour.

A list of all the included events wouldn’t be possible, so why not visit the official website of The British Museum and seek more information yourself. To visit, click here.
