Wonder Girl with David Letterman

It was one of the greatest moments on late night talk TV.  David Letterman had been interviewing Debra Winger, and he showed some footage of her from her 1976 role as Wonder Girl on the classic Wonder Woman TV show.  After watching the footage and reminiscing about the show, Debra declared that she had put all of that behind her.  She said that the subject of her as Wonder Girl almost never came up nowadays.

As the interview came to a close, she said that she urgently had to go.

So she rips her outer clothes off, revealing her Wonder Girl costume.  The studio audience erupts into cheering and uproarious applause.

As the Wonder Woman theme music plays, Debra "Wonder Girl" Winger then runs past the audience and out of the studio as David Letterman looks stunned.  In the meantime, the audience simply goes wild.

Bandleader Paul Schaeffer said, "That was great!" and Letterman exclaimed, "I had no idea!"  I don't know if their reactions were staged or not, but it certainly was a great gimmick.

So who played the Wonder Woman music? Mind you, Paul didn't specifically say that he was surprised, so it could be that he was in on the whole gag.  Or perhaps their sound guy was playing some pretaped music.  I don't know.  Either way, it was funny.

Incidentally, does anyone else think that Debra looked lovelier on Letterman that she did in her teenage years as Wonder Girl?  I certainly do. Some women simply age well.
