Pagan Christmas: The Plants, Spirits, and Rituals at the Origins of Yuletide (Paperback) - by Christian Rätsch, Claudia Müller-Ebeling - Product Description: An examination of the sacred botany and the pagan origins and rituals of Christmas • Analyzes the symbolism of the many plants associated with Christmas • Reveals the shamanic rituals that are at the heart of the Christmas celebration - The day on which many commemorate the birth of Christ has its origins in pagan rituals that center on tree worship, agriculture, magic, and social exchange. But Christmas is no ordinary folk observance. It is an evolving feast that over the centuries has absorbed elements from cultures all over the world--practices that give plants and plant spirits pride of place. In fact, the symbolic use of plants at Christmas effectively transforms the modern-day living room into a place of shamanic ritual. Christian Rätsch and Claudia Müller-Ebeling show how the ancient meaning of the botanical elements of Christmas provides a unique view of the religion that existed in Europe before the introduction of Christianity. The fir tree was originally revered as the sacred World Tree in northern Europe. When the church was unable to drive the tree cult out of people’s consciousness, it incorporated the fir tree by dedicating it to the Christ child. Father Christmas in his red-and-white suit, who flies through the sky in a sleigh drawn by reindeer, has his mythological roots in the shamanic reindeer-herding tribes of arctic Europe and Siberia. These northern shamans used the hallucinogenic fly agaric mushroom, which is red and white, to make their soul flights to the other world. Apples, which figure heavily in Christmas baking, are symbols of the sun god Apollo, so they find a natural place at winter solstice celebrations of the return of the sun. In fact, the authors contend that the emphasis of Christmas on green plants and the promise of the return of life in the dead of winter is just an adaptation of the pagan winter solstice celebration.
Unwrapping Christmas: (Oxford Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology) (Paperback) by Daniel Miller (Editor) - Product Description: In an age of secularization and the decline of ritual, Christmas has emerged as the most promising candidate for the first global festival. It is celebrated in the Christian West as well as in many countries with either a minority or no Christian population. How is it that Christmas is not merely surviving, but actually gaining in importance? Unwrapping Christmas is the first comparative study of the Christmas phenomenon, based on direct observation of how the festival is actually celebrated in diverse social contexts. It begins by presenting general theories of Christmas and includes the first full English translation of "Father Christmas Executed" by Claude Levi-Strauss. The focus then turns to two controversial issues: the relationship between Christmas and materialism, and the debate over the place of the family in Christmas celebrations. Both of these issues are examined and interpreted in a variety of cultural contexts; including the USA, Japan, Britain, Sweden, and Trinidad. Christmas is rapidly becoming the focus for a constellation of activities including gift-giving, the marking of the seasons, and the celebration of extended family networks. This collection, the first systematic analysis of Christmas, represents a fascinating and significant contribution to understanding how and why this holiday has developed into the global festival celebrated today.
Our Pagan Christmas: by R. J. Condon (Paperback - Jun 1, 1989), foreword, Barbara Smoker. London : National Secular Society, 1974. 19p. : illus. What religion celebrated December 25, even before Jesus was supposed to have been born? Where did the Christians get the "born of a virgin" idea? Were the "three kings" the real stars of the story? This small 20 page booklet deals with these and other questions in a succinct form, and will start readers on their way to understanding the real meaning and origins of Christmas
Christmas in Ritual and Tradition, Christian and Pagan: (Paperback) by Clement A. Miles - 2009 - Religion - 420 pages, Published by T. Fisher Unwin - A tour of the customs and traditions of Christmas, from Christmas Cards to Present-Giving -- with everything in between! Full of insightful scholarship and fun facts. This is a study of the origin of modern Christmas in ancient pagan traditions, how the festival was adopted by Christianity, and its evolution through history. Miles includes descriptions of folk-lore related to the Christmas season from a wide range of European countries, including an extensive collection of folk songs. It is important to learn about these traditions to remind ourselves that before Christmas became a hyper-commercialized festival of consumption, it was a joyous celebration of renewal and friendship.
Time Is the Ally of Deceit: (Paperback) by Richard Rives (Author) - Product Description: There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. ...Proverbs 16:25 Many aspects of Traditional Christianity cannot be found in the Bible. They can however be traced directly to the worship of pagan gods which predate Christianity by centuries. How is it that precepts that have nothing to do with Christ and everything to do with pagan sun worship have found their way into our churches? History reveals that there is one very good answer: Time is the Ally of Deceit. FLEE TO THE MOUNTAINS First century believers, based on the warning by Jesus left Jerusalem prior to its destruction in 70 A.D. BAAL COMES TO ROME During the third century Roman emperors brought the worship of Baal to Rome consolidating the worship of all the sun gods under the title Sol Invictus. THE PERSIAN SUN GOD MITHRA Historians report that during the 4th century the worship of the Persian sun god Mithra mysteriously vanished as Christianity was established as the religion of the empire. Was it Mithraism that vanished? or true Christianity? CONSTANTINE AND THE NICAEAN COUNCIL While his coins state that he was committed to the sun god Sol Invictus, Constantine became known as the First Christian Emperor. Presiding over the Council of Nicaea the date for the observance of Passover was changed from the Biblically prescribed timing. REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY Many theologians would tell us that Sunday has replaced the 7th day Sabbath: that in fact the law has been "nailed to the cross." Jesus said that unitl heaven and earth pass away not even the slightest aspect of the law would change.
