McNaught Genealogy

Welcome to my McNaught Genealogy Website
Previously Known as McNaughtGen!

As many of you have noticed my website has changed radically, it still has all the
content it had before and even a few additions to it but it looks very, very different.
The biggest change that has happened is that it has a new web address, so if you have
my old website bookmarked, please bookmark the new address.
as the old address www.geocities.com/mcnaughtgen/ has now been deleted due
to a new webhost.
My new web address is www.mcnaughtgenealogy.co.uk

A Little About Myself...

My name is Bill McNaught and I have been researching my family tree for some time.
My website is dedicated to my ancestors, who over the generations have consisted of
McNaughts, Brisbanes, Carswells, Cavens, Hamiltons, Heuchans, Muirheads
and Thomsons.

I Live in Dumfries in the South West of Scotland, and I have travelled many miles
within the local and rural areas, visiting churchyards and cemeteries as well as
many hours spent in the local library, all of which have helped me to research my
ancestors and their families.

A Little About Dumfries

I was born and raised in Dumfries in the South West of Scotland, here I will tell
you a little about the town and role my ancestors played within it.
On to the Town

Dumfries & Galloway Cemetery & Churchyard Locations

Dumfries & Galloway in South West Scotland, covers 2649 Square Miles with a overall population of 148,000.
There are many small villages and larger towns within the area each with its own cemetery or churchyard. The burial places shown on the map are named via a key but although I have visited all of them I have only featured the ones in which my ancestors are interred.

McNaught Family Tree Chart

This is my McNaught family chart, It shows my ancestors dating as far back as 1750. They lived in both Kirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire and were either Farmers or Spirit Merchants, with a few Shoemakers, Booksellers and Innkeepers thrown in.

But the above family chart only shows the McNaught direct line, there are many other branches off it that I am still researching.

On to the Chart ...

A Brief History of the Local Churchyards

The cemeteries and churchyards within Dumfries and Galloway each have their own unique history, I have put together a brief introduction for each of my favourites where my ancestors are interred.
Click the name to follow the link, each will open in a new page.

Monumantal Inscriptions

These pages contain just some of the monumental inscriptions which I have collected during my research, each of the persons listed are a small part of a very big jigsaw which I am currently piecing together. I will add more inscriptions to the list as I get them sorted out.

The Duchess of Buccleuch Newspaper Articles

Through my research I found that one of my ancestors had owned a Brig named The Duchess of Buccleuch. The Brig's history was filled with joy but eventually tragedy. The following newspaper articles taken from local Dumfriesshire newspapers documents these events.
Onto the Articles ...

BBC 'Making History' Investigation

The Duchess of Buccleuch was investigated as part of a BBC radio programme, the following page covers everything that was mentioned during the programme from the question asked to the answer given.

Unrelated Materials Gathered

A vast collection of unrelated genealogical materials gathered during the research process shown by name, area and type. Email for more information if any of the materials are relevant to you and I will be more than happy to help.
