History of The NBBL

History of The NBBL

After the Great Wars much of the Realm was left as either ruin or desolation. Few major cities still stood unaffected by the ravages of the Great Wars, and even though there was now peace amongst the inhabitants it was uneasy at best. The races were now split so far and wide it was unlikely that there would ever again be an uprising of such magnitude. However petty rivalries still existed and often lead to small outbreaks of violence, which although threatened no further than their immediate surrounds, still harboured racial and tribal tensions.

None of the Races wished there ever to be a return to the violence and hate prior to and during the Great War, so something was needed to consolidate the tenuous peaceful environment that now existed.

After the Great Wars a new sport called Blood Bowl had amassed a widespread appeal. The sport in its infancy was still a brutal game, but its effects on communities did not go unnoticed. Within only a few years teams had sprung up all over the realms. Teams soon reached a fanatical following, to the point where the better players had taken on an almost privileged place in their communities and were seen as examples to which the younger community members for whom the great wars were only history rather than memories could aspire to.

The effect that Blood Bowl had on communities did not go unnoticed; roving teams would often tour their community, playing a series of games against other local teams. Incredibly these small one off games united the community in ways no other means could. Spirits were lifted and the community was joined if only for a short time in support of their local heroes. It soon became apparent that this could be used as a tool for unifying not just communities but creating bonds and alliances throughout the entire realms. Already other Races would talk admiringly of the best Orc players, the awe they held of the strength and relentlessness of the Undead Teams, and their amazement of the speed and agility of the Elven teams.

High Lord Nekros of Arcadia, had been a long admirer of the sport, and saw the potential of using this sport to break down any remaining racial tensions. He envisaged a world where an Orc and a Human would stand side by side cheering a Elf, Dwarf or any other team to victory, but his vision was dependant on unification of the vast rule differences and the unwillingness of people to travel to other communities.

To this end he gathered a representative of each of the then Blood Bowl playing races, and so was borne the BBC. Their goal to unify the sport globally. However to make this work they knew that something, a common goal was needed. So was borne the NBBL. A competition run annually, teams would be professional and act as representatives of their communities to the common goal of being the Blood Bowl champions. When the news of the competition spread, enthusiasm took hold and like an unstoppable force, teams sprang up all over the realm in the hopes of winning the Blood Bowl and gaining fame eternal
