Montgomery County Action for Healthy Kids is a coalition of parents and professionals who believe that nutrition education, quality, daily physical activity, and a well-balanced, healthy diet promote academic achievement as well as lifelong health and wellness.  Currently, 16% of our nation's children are overweight;  We are concerned with the growing incidence of overweight  and with the increased rate of high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and joint problems in our children.  We are convinced that public schools must play a vital role in breaking the cycle of childhood overweight and in fostering healthy lifestyles for students, teachers, staff, administrators and parents, alike.

The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 required each school district to draft a School Wellness Policy by the Summer of 2006.  The Montgomery County Wellness Policy was approved on 6/06/06.  The Wellness Policy addresses a number of concerns including, but not limited to, the integration of nutrition education and physical activity into the curriculum, mandating healthy choices in vending machines, creating greater opportunities for being active and increased fresh fruit and vegetable offerings through the School Foods Program. We believe a climate of collaboration between parents, teachers, administrators, children and the public creates the best forum for acheiving optimal wellness policies for our schools.

Please review our mission and the informative links we have included to assist you in understanding wellness policies and child nutrition and physical activity in the public schools.  New to the Website is a link highlighting the coalition's accomplishments to date.  This will be continually updated to highlight the great work we are doing.  We invite you to join us in helping our children meet their potential as healthy, active, fit and happy young people.  Your insights and opinions as parents, teachers and members of the Montgomery County community are essential.

We hope that you will join us at our meetings at the Blacksburg Public Library in the Community Room at 11:30 a.m. on March 7th, 21st, April 4, 18th, and May 2nd.  Additional dates in May and June will be scheduled at a later time.  You may bring food and beverages. Our focus will be a continued dicussion of future directions.
